When, lo! these many many years back, I was working on a drug hotline, the ol' "cubes to the jewels" treatment was recommended for heroin overdose while they took the guy to the hospital. It worked then (1969-70) and it seems to work now.

It seemed an unlikely treatment, but you know, whatever works....

Jaze, I learned it by observing others. Some people had brought a passed-out dude to the drug hotline I was volunteering at, instead of doing the smart thing and going straight to the ER or the smarter thing of calling an ambalance; this ice-cube thing was what the more-experienced volunteer did as a matter of course. I only got to drive. :~) I found out later that the ice thing is a help while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

I prefer to point out the obscure facts when people attack me out of their own bigoted stereotyping, but....

1. In some respects I am radically socialist (never part of the rigid rightwing religious).

2. I used to be a twin.

3. I've spent a number of hours with more than one would-be suicide, talking them off high places and off/through bad dope. I learned that ice cubes on testicles actually works in some overdoses, to buy time to get the patient to the ER.

4. In my extreme youth I once left known civilization with a total stranger for a weekend of camping that eventually included being given some very, very bad dope, a flood, target shooting (at me and my helpful rescuer) and having the shooter arrested when he arrived back in civilization still (foolishly) toting a pistol deep in his backpack.

5. I can drive very fast with great enjoyment, on the right roads, and I can nail the ravine section of Sheridan Road on Chicago's north shore in a full-length cargo van full of people and cleaning equipment.

6. I'm good at raising and nursing critters, most of whom come to me instantly-- wild or tame.

7. I'm known around my community as an excellent stepmother.

8. I was born in the morning, but not this morning.

9. I'm a real good shot with a .22 rifle, and with handguns up to .380 and six-inch barrels.

10. I'm staunch in an emergency, whether it be bloodied people or people needing to be extracted from a bad situation in a real big hurry.

2. I have traveled great distances to stand under the shadow of the eclipsed Sun...many times.
3. I jones for good panang ghai.
4. I have too many obscure books... obscure, but not valuable.
5. I have no cats.
6. Once learned a Japanese song about noodle soup, and a better one about herring fishing.
7. I know how to do the following: Changool Jahsee haaron mackee.
8. I will never choose to see a Pauly Shore film.
9. I once gave Michael Hedges a G string.
10. I saw the last manned flight to the moon from 3 miles away. Loud.

1) I missed this thread when it was originally on the board because Hurricane Ivan knocked my telephone service out for ten weeks.

2) I may or may not be smart enough to be a member of Mensa. I've never been tested and I wouldn't be a member anyway. I'm smart enough to have built my own house, learned to play several instruments tolerably well with no formal instruction, and figured out how to make a decent living doing something that I enjoy immensely (and, incidentally, taught myself how to do) without having to kiss anyone's ass.

3) I think item #2 actually revealed eight things about me which actually makes this item #10 instead of #3.

I once played in banjo in a jazz band and the job carried a curse, as the previous holder of the job had disappeared in mysterious circumstances - no one would tell me the details.

As a baby, I was Mr Cod Liver Oil and Orange Juice for Boston, in 1949. its been downhill all the way ever since. my picture was in the window of the Ministry of Food.

I was an extra in Crossroads, The Nanny, Boon and some other TV things.

I was in the same class at school as Jim(Stone the Crows!)Broadbent, the Oscar Winner.

I heard The Beatles before they were famous, standing outside St George's Hall, St Helens. We were kids larking about.

My Dad was a policeman. When Larry Parnes asked him to provide Billy Fury with an escort to the stage, past his adoring fans. Dad said, tell the big jessy to get up there and get on with it....!

such musical ability as I've got came from my Dad's side of the family - he played the mandoline really well.

my real name should be Travers. that was the name of the irish gypsy family who sold my grandad, when he was a baby, in a St Helens pub.

i am seeing a hypnotist to help me lose weight.

i can't tell jokes.

all the best

5 more...

1.I have no middle name and sort of feel cheated. I picked Anthony as my confirmation name. I think James Anthony has a nice ring to it. It's not legal, though.

2. Mashed potatoes is my favorite food. I also like french fries with gravy on them.

3. A gypsy once told me someone put a curse on my life as a baby, and for $15 she would remove it. I declined her offer.

4. I'm fascinated by the occult, unsolved mysteries, and lost civilizations.

5. Bora Bora would be my #1 destination if I ever get the chance. the fjords of Norway would be #2.

I have had 5 different natural hair colors throughout my life (normally 2 at a time). Clear, white, blonde, copper red and rarely black.

I had 4 too many adult eye teeth but had them removed in childhood.

My sense of smell is more acute than anyone else I have ever met.

My vision extends far into ultraviolet which makes certain flowers appear different to me compared to dark eyed people.

I witnessed a physical phenomenon that defied current laws of physics.

I have 6 half brothers/sisters I have never met and 2 that I have.

In college I made Deans list once right after being put on academic probation.

I was a therapeutic hypnotist for 12 years and marveled at some of the confessions people made.

I can recall at least 5 occaisions in which other people have saved my life.

I recall nearly as many occaisions where people have tried to take it.

I find people most beautiful when they are not egocentric.

I wish I could have been a better musician.

My niece is a blood relative to Edgar Allen Poe. My sister in law inherited 2k from his estate many years ago as she was one of many distant relatives. He had no children as I understand it but had cousins. So my grand niece will have my blood and Edgar Allen Poe's mixed together. Cool!

"Guest" had asked about the 4in scar from a frisbee accident....

Pretty boring actually... a friend and I were playing frisbee in his yard, to see how many consecutive catches we could make... we were up to around 40 or 50, when his throw went a little wild. I went running for it, tripped, and ripped a nice gash in my arm on the side of a utility trailer in his driveway.

Didn't make the catch, either.

Brian.

thanks again, guys, for the warm wishes. here's some more obscure facts..

12. I nearly died from serious illness after the birth of my youngest child, and spent three years recovering, including recovering my memory.

13. In 1983 I marched with 800 women to Pine Gap, an american defence base near Uluru in Central Australia, and after a tussle with a policewoman pulled the bolt out of the gate so that it could be opened. 111 women broke through and entered the facility, before being arrested. They all gave the name Karen Silkwood.

14. i have sailed down the Ganges at dawn, watching dolphins jumping and playing in the holy city of Varanasi.

15. i have written several pantomimes in rhyme for children, and produced them at various festivals. They include a republican version of Cinderella (she marries the gardener), Snowed Under and the Seven Downsized Persons (but there were about twelve downsized persons acting as the dwarves, because they were job sharing) and Love at First Byte (a Vampire one).

16. I like turkish delight.

Flight duration a mere 22 mins & 20 seconds!

Freda -
I am envious. Congratulations! Oddly enough, I almost named my daughter Rose Marie but I couldn't make up my mind between Anna Rose, Marianna Rose, Rosanna Marie, etc. Beautiful and traditional names in my family. I hope mother and daughter are doing well and basking in bliss.

Continued from previous thread:

19. I have a scar on my right cheek. It doesn't show on passport photographs. Well, not where it is. Apparently I had an abscess on my, er, well, my posterior when aged 18 months or so. It was rather inexpertly lanced by a district nurse. It has been quite a while since anyone was intimate or inquisitive enough to notice or comment on it.

20. Another scar was acquired when training in the army in 1981. I collided with someone whose rifle was loaded with blanks, but did not have a "blank firing adaptor" fitted. I was left with a circular burn scar on my forearm, which took a long time to heal, because threads of shirt and combat jacket had been driven into it. For years afterwards, if I wished to appear hard, I would refer to the scar as a "7.62 mm low-velocity entry wound" (i.e. a bullet hole).

I don't believe the owners of pit-bulls quite fall into the teary-eyed category Fred.

Didn't mean to dis dogs or dog owners--I've had a couple. But there's a certain type of rank sentimentalist that uses dogs as the objects of their deep teary-eyed love of themselves. And they also don't like to pay for their newspapers. My favorite dogs are dingos.

Thank you, Nick and Sue B.

Nick -- I'm hopeful now because I think I now understand some very important things that I never quite got before. Like it's not about being cute and sexy and talented and laughing alot as an end in itself. As I have said before, it's about vulnerability and it's about intimacy, which means allowing yourself to be known all the way down to the bone and only sticking around people who allow themselves to be known that way.

Sue -- Guess our Catters across the pond don't know about Boston Latin (and many Staters don't know it either), but that was and is a hell of a school. Let's put it this way: when you graduate from that school, you will be a Harold Bloom-type classical intellectual, an anomoly in the sea of unfortunate mediocrity that characterizes American public schools.

at the risk of being repetitious-

11. When I was small, my father told me he went to Borstal with Gene Autry. I believed him.

12. My family has labeled me an obsessive compulsive with ADD.

13. We started building our house 30 years ago and it is still not finished.

14. My husband and I just marked our 32nd wedding anniversary and to celebrate, we just completed a 2,700 km driving tour of BC, including a side trip, in order to take our dogs to Barkerville, only to find that dogs are not permitted in Barkerville, but we took them in anyways.

15. I have never been without a dog in 58 years. I have only been    bitten by a dog once, full in the face, when I was four. I still have a scar from it. It was not my dog. It was a cocker spaniel. I am still not particularly fond of cocker spaniels. I learned early that not all dogs are trustworthy, nor all people, but dogs are generally more trustworthy than people and have governed my life accordingly.

16. My grandfather sailed around the Horn under canvas.

17. I collect dragonflies.

18. I make wonderful soups and incredible steak and kidney pie.

Probably happened, Dianavan, people suck, but I don't really know. I didn't know any other paperboys except my brother.
I was drafted into my older brother's morning route one night when I'd stayed up late playing with a tape recorder and my dad's guitar. It's one of my clearest memories--I was just getting ready to collapse in bed when I heard my brother begging off sick. Somehow he never got better enough to do the route again, and my parents wouldn't let him quit, so that meant it was my job now. I was a middle child. I rolled my papers at the building in silence, didn't know or speak to anyone there.

and I had an afternoon route, where a truck dropped my papers. Never knew another paperboy--I think I knew of some kids who had routes.

The night I inherited a paper-route is probably my best obscure fact about me, because it's one of the longest clearest memories I have from childhood.

Another is when I was 14 I decided to buy myself some cool sandals with my own money from working at a screen-printing shop. I wound up the next day wearing them at an older girl's apartment, where I came to a stoned but lucid realization that they were atrocious and ridiculous things to wear, tucked them discreetly under the sofa, went home barefoot, and never looked back.
