Todd Clewell pointed me to this web site: Hill Country Tunes by Samuel Bayard. It contains .pdf files with scans of the out-of-print book. I'm thinking this might be an interesting resource for you tune hounds out there.

Masato and Q, I've been looking for the book for years...and am delighted that someone from Penn State (where Bayard was a professor) would offer web access to it.

I mentioned this briefly in an earlier post about Clifftop, but there, Todd Clewell released a CD of Sarah Armstrong's Tunes from Bayard's Hill Country Tunes, including "The Snouts and Ears of America", "Maggots in the Sheep Hide" and many others with less interesting titles...actually, one of the tunes, "The Boyne Water", is from Baryard's later book, "Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife".

The CD, "Sarah Armstrong's Tunes", is available from Todd:

Happy Dog Records
13116 Mont Rd.
Felton, PA 17322

Todd's e-mail address: tclewell1@msn.com

(Unpaid) recommendation for Todd's CD, and for the .pdf files of Hill Country Tunes. I bought my own copy from Folklore Associates of Hatboro PA around 1967. How did I know to do that? Well. . . Peggy Seeger made a record for the long-dead Folk-Lyric label in the early 60s and the last couple tunes were a self'described "experiment in playing fiddle tunes note for note on the banjo"-- four of the six tunes were from Bayard's book, which was the first I had heard of it. (Fifth and sixth were the New England chestnut "Opera Reel" and Devil's Dream and yes, this was about two years before Bill Keith joined Monroe's band)

What a nice thing for Penn State to do!

OK, so I need Adobe Reader to read this stuff. I went to download Adobe, but I got a window saying that this file may be hazardous to my computer, but I can download it if I want to. Is that normal?
And if I want it, do I click on "Save" or "open"?. Thanks, Steve

Steve, I'm no expert but it looks as though your Internet security settings are fairly conservative - nothing wrong with that. I would consider Acrobat as a very safe download, particularly if it comes from the Adobe site.

Thanks to Greg and Todd for locating this great resource. I'm not volunteering, but is anyone aware of plans to transcribe the tines to MIDI or ABC etc?

Regards, John

(Unpaid, unless you want to, Pete) Also, the Orpheus Supertones recorded a dynamite version of "Sarah Armstrong's Tune" on their debut recording "Bound To Have A Little Fun". It is actually "Old Reel" from Hill Country Tunes.

Orpheus Supertones: Pete Peterson, Kellie Allen, Walt Koken and Clare Milliner.

Harry Bolick has designed a Sarah Armstrong T-Shirt. On this web page, he references Todd Clewell's CD, saying it is available at County Sales. I just sent a note to Todd asking him if Camsco has it...
