You haven`t won the "big one", until you do 1918 will have to suffice.
In Ireland my own County Armagh won the All-Ireland Championship for the first time in 2002, after waiting from the foundation of the GAA IN 1884 you can forgive us for still basking in the glory.
Well done to the Red Sox, what a terrific come-back, and I suppose most neutrals will be cheering you on, on Saturday, so c`mon and seal it, that 1918 win is lost in the mist of time.

Once again: The curse is for the World Series, not the ALCS. They've won the pennant several times since 1918.

Best of luck to them regardless.

Curse, Schmurse!

I was living in New York City in 1960 and was (and still am) a great Pittsburgh Pirates fan. I was the only Pirate fan in a large dorm of Yankee fans and was mercilessly ridiculed. Until Bill Mazeroski hit that home run to win game 7. I went crazy and was lucky to get out of the room alive.

If Moses could part the Red Sea, why can't the Red Sox win?

Jerry

Jerry...I won $25 on that game in the pool at the store I worked for

I thought I had lost after the 3rd inning, but the Pirates came back and refreshed my entry. I have always been grateful..

I have it from reliable sources - the Yankees allowed the Sox to win after showing them they didn't have to. It was pity.

Re "I'm a Yankee fan and sad that they didn't have what it takes to win."

That's the kind of sneering, demanding attitude that makes Yankee fans so despised in the rest of the country. They won games all season and during the playoffs, but they weren't perfect, so now they are no good.

Maybe George S. wasn't the smartest in having 2 former Blue Jays pitchers on the mound trying to win his games in the late innings- that didn't seem to help. Who will he spend the millions on now for next year? (And I still wonder about Boston's Mike Timlin -also former Blue Jay who just couldn't seem to get the job done often in Toronto). What great baseball games - I'm so tired from watching the tube late. - On to the World Series.

Who will George spend millions on next year? ESPN showed us a "top ten" last night. I can't remnembner them all, but some were:

Alfonso Soriano or Nomar Garciaparra (2b)
Carlos Delgado (1b)
Pedro Gonzalez (p -- "Who's yr Daddy?")
Carlos Beltran (cf)
Randy Johnson, the Big Unit (p)

The remaining four were all pitchers -- sorry I can't remember...

Yes, Arnie, the Sox often take pitchers who seem to be washed up and rehabilitate them. They've always had an excellent coaching staff for their pitchers. The Yankees couldn't keep up in that particular area. In fact, the Yankees pitching is having an off year (No Wells, no Pettite, no Clemens) so it's impressive they made it as far as they did!

All I want to say is same old same old. When the red soxs make the world series they face the NL team with best record, and lose in 7. Also Albert Pojols will rock your pitching staff w/ the rest of murder's row. Finally who's worse at 1st base ortiz or mallar? So stop your rioting and start your moping and drinking cause you will lose in 7.

We don't know much about baseball over here, but today the Guardian had a leader all about this, first time that's ever happened. Ending up:

"No one with a sense of sporting romance can fail to hope they can do it. But there is a wider reason for wishing the Red Sox well. They are John Kerry's local team. So a Boston win might be a good omen for the senator's November 2 contest too.

This might not necessarily help - but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

From: Susan A-R

Hmmm, then you are caught between two possibilities McGrath, If the sox win, does it mean Kerry's going to win, or does it mean what we've thought all along, that the world is going to end. In that case, we're in for George W. I like your scenario better.

Subject: RE: BS: Red Sox Beat Yankees

Well, I hope there is no omen there because I want the Red Sox to lose--no really, I want the Cardinals to win, and I want KERRY to win, and if I can only have one, it has to be Kerry---much as I love the Cardinals and Pujols and Rolen and Edmonds and Williams and.....

Will Antrim beat Armagh in next year's Senior Hurling C'ship?
So when the Red Sox return to Boston 3-2 down will they win the remaining two games?

Mick, I knew there must be some reason I liked you.

I haven't watched a baseball game in ages. Sometime in the early 80s, my boss was dating a guy who was an AP photographer for all Boston teams at home. I got to sit on the floor at a Celtics game when Bird and McHale were playing. Once, he invited us to watch a Red Sox game from his box. (Free food, free beer, and air conditioning so you could watch the game INSIDE on closed circuit TV if you wanted to. Who would want to?) They lost...to the Yankees. A couple of folks were having more fun watching Martin and hoping he'd have a tantrum.

Actually, the last game I watched was the final game of a certain previous world series. I was at a Halloween party, dressed as a cave girl. The ball was a grounder, and easy catch for Bruckner, who... Well, you know the rest of the story.

I might actually watch the next game.

Actually, Jeri, it wasn't the final game.
And it wasn't Billy Buck's fault that they lost the next night.
Poor guy's had a bad rap since '86.
I sincerely hope that when the Sox take it all this year, it will lay the Bill Buckner myth to rest along with the alleged "Curse of the Bambino."

Delighted for Boston, pleased to get that forecast wrong, still a way to go yet, the pleasure of your team winning after a long wait cannot be matched.
Seamus,Armagh meet Fermanagh in the preliminary round next year, and Armagh hurlers wouldnt`t beat the Antrim Camogie team[ladies], likewise the Antrim footballers wouldn`t beat our Siters of Mercy team.
I will listen out for the fourth game result to-morrow morning, it`s being shown in the wee small hours on Sat TV, too late for me.

We did it!! Okay, the Sox did it!!
I sat drinking my Sam Adams (Boston beer for the non USers), wearing my Red Sox cap, and my 25 year old Red Sox (bless 'em!) warmup jacket, watching on Fox.
Between innings I'd run outside to see the lunar eclipse, then back in for the 1st pitch of the next inning.
How about Derek Lowe?
What a game. And a leadoff dinger from Johnny (Baseball Jesus) Damon. Oh yeah!!
Babe Ruth, you're outta here!

Seamus

Ard Mhacha, Armagh used to have a few handy hurlers back in the day - Jimmy Carlisle, Jimmy Whan.....OK, TWO handy hurlers...
And you're right about our footballers.
They wouldn't know whether a football was blown-up or stuffed.

A fabled win in every way, coming back from the dead against the Yankees, and winning eight straight games, beating the Cardinals on their own patch were they where pratically unbeatable, in years to come the media will refer back to this Series as the most remarkable of all time.
