Before we could afford a telly or a car, John's alt-radio presentations helped us through the worst time of the day (the 30 minutes after dragging our asses out of bed and facing the trek to the bus-stop ready for the tedious journey to work) - a daily injection of real tonic to face the day. After nearly 40 years he somehow seemed part of the family.

David Jacobs (last Sunday night - Radio 2) said that he didn't care too much for John's choice of music. Further endorsement of what a top guy he was.

One of the nice things about the tributes and media coverage of Peel's death is the lack of maudlin sentalmentality. Everyone is sorry to see him gone and they all miss a broadcaster of taste and integrity; but no-one is "crying in the streets," no-one feels that they "can't go on." In short, everyone is behaving rationally, like adults. Surely a worthy tribute to John Peel. I'm sure Boris Johnson approves.

I've heard a rumour that Sanctuary Records might be rereleasing Teenage Kicks as a tribute to him. I hope it's true, I'd definitely buy it.

I used to listen to him before I went to sleep. John Peel on weekdays and the Top 40 on Sunday were the only things I listened to Radio 1 for. I don't think I'll bother now.

I've always admired John Peel without actually liking his broadcasts. Although a man of incredible integrity, I found his music programmes unlistenable - one hour of obscure shit to find a gem? It was never worth it. Home Truths was dull beyond belief. I never liked his voice, either. However, working as he did in a medium dominated by wankers, he was the genuine article. The music was always first. He never considered himself to more important than the music and he never talked over the music, either.

I felt a greater loss when Alexis Korner died because his programmes, quite frankly, were better, and I loved his voice.

Teenage Kicks, however, was a great pop record.

I wonder if his record collection will now be sold on eBay by his wife, Shelia?

each record has Peel's notes on the cover, 3 asterisks meant it must be played. He had to extend his house just so he could fit them all in!

up to now, a radio station has offered £1 million.

The New Bands Tent at Glastonbury, is to be renamed the John Peel Stage. I for once, loved Peel at Glastonbury, and looked forward to seeing him presenting it every year almost as much as the event himself. He was stoned one year!!!!

The BBC are going to do a tribute of some sort to him, after discussing it with his family.

I too enjoyed his programmes when I lived in England - and I am still the proud owner of a John Peel's "Archive Things" LP (1970) which introduced interesting snippets from around the musical world - taken from the BBC Archives - and from when "World Music" (as it later came to be known) was still hard-to-get ...

In the late eighties I met Viktor, a musician from Lenningrad, who was in Köln briefly as part of a project which brought Russian musicains over to this city. He told me about his band, who in their pre Gorbachev days were considered to be "criminal". They were arrested by the KGB after every gig, which he accepted as an occupational hazard! Viktor knew of John Peel, because he played their home made tapes on the air.
John Peel was the true champion of the outsiders - of the musicians who do not have the powerful media and financial pull to get them past the the ring fenced barriers, which effectively bar the way of most musicians to any form of airplay. He made mistakes, but he was quite entitled to. That was part of his integrity. I'll take John Peel any day against the spineless, sanitised salesmen of mainstream radio.
Rest in peace John. You will be sadly missed.

Yeah Ralphie I recall that parody too - it was written by Bill Oddie I suspect, and I believe it came out on a final-series episode of the radio show I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, in a sketch called Radio Mindless which (you guessed it) lampooned Wunderful Radio One with a bludgeon. Listening to Andy Kershaw tell how he met John recently and how the move of his late night show to the early hours (1am i think he said)was taking its toll on john, really shocked me. When you hear some of the absolute 'pop' shite (in my opinion) that has been spewed out by national radio (radion 1 in particular) over the years by some so-called DJ's who were not fit to be allowed near a turntable; and you consider how they've treated people like John Peel (& kershaw himself) i.e sidelining them to the remote hours or another station is a shocking disgrace.

Peel did more for the furtherence of quality comtempory (& our traditional) music over the last 40 years than anyone else in the medial.

Ok so they carried on employing him and John being loyal was happy to stay on but they could have treated him better at the latter end of his career i reckon. But p'raps i'm being naive to expect that this megga 'conservative', music industry/money driven media of ours could ever change. After all look how it treats our traditional music.

Such sad news. I can't remember a time when I wasn't aware of this man and I can hear his voice so clearly now.

He was so influential in the music field and gave so many artistes their start. It's difficult to think that he's gone, but he always will be around as long as we remember him.

I was saddened too. I found his voice one of the best on radio and on tv voice-overs. I didn't share his taste in modern bands but he also liked the odd folkie and also old blues men like M.John Hurt & Bo Diddley. His non-DJ persona as indulgent father and sympathetic interviewer made him seem a really nice guy. He will be reunited with John Walters, now , a great combination.

But with John you know he meant what he said - relishing the oddity of life, taking pleasure in the waitress's insistance on being a person, with her touch of bloody mindedness, and proud that Liverpool hasn't rolled over and surrendered.

In the early 1970's when I was into Floyd, Zeppelin and blues-based music, John Peel was playing Finbar and Eddie Furey, Trees, the Woods Band, the Albion Country Band (with Steve Ashley, Sue Draheim and Royston Wood in its line-up), and the Cheviot Ranters Country Dance Band. I was hooked! This is testimony to the breadth of John's musical foresight, and he will be sorely missed.

John Peel was always a friend to music, and musicians. His dry wit could also warm the most sodden of festival-goers.
