Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 07 Nov 04 - 10:41 AM Did you watch the BBC2 tribute last night at 10pm? I am that 'sad' that I also taped it so I can watch it over again. Don't get too upset s6k. You can't expect everyone to feel as strongly as you. The guest's comment was out of order and I'm sure he'll be slated by the rest of this thread, and, of course, it serves him right. JP and LFC are heroes to a big, wide world and so they should be. |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Ralphie Date: 03 Nov 04 - 11:57 AM And also. What with the re record of Band Aids "Christmas" later in the month.. Releasing "Teenage Kicks" at the same time could really provoke a battle of the bands for the Christmas No 1. Anything to keep Cliff marginalised Ralphie (tongue firmly in cheek) |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Ralphie Date: 03 Nov 04 - 11:52 AM Penguin Egg... Absolutely!! Did anyone see Gavin Esler on last tuesdays Newsnight, interviewing the bass player of the Undertones, and Mark E Smith of the Fall. Priceless TV. John would have fallen about laughing!! Regards Ralphie Watch this space for news of a tribute gig....At the moment we're contemplating the Isle of Wight....No, not the festival.....The Isle of Wight......All of it! |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,Joe Date: 03 Nov 04 - 09:58 AM Before we could afford a telly or a car, John's alt-radio presentations helped us through the worst time of the day (the 30 minutes after dragging our asses out of bed and facing the trek to the bus-stop ready for the tedious journey to work) - a daily injection of real tonic to face the day. After nearly 40 years he somehow seemed part of the family. David Jacobs (last Sunday night - Radio 2) said that he didn't care too much for John's choice of music. Further endorsement of what a top guy he was. Bless you John ....... and thanks for the tonics and the memories. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GMT Date: 03 Nov 04 - 07:56 AM I will miss his voice. He introduced me to REAL music. RIP John. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Folk Form # 1 Date: 03 Nov 04 - 07:05 AM One of the nice things about the tributes and media coverage of Peel's death is the lack of maudlin sentalmentality. Everyone is sorry to see him gone and they all miss a broadcaster of taste and integrity; but no-one is "crying in the streets," no-one feels that they "can't go on." In short, everyone is behaving rationally, like adults. Surely a worthy tribute to John Peel. I'm sure Boris Johnson approves. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: fat B****rd Date: 03 Nov 04 - 04:37 AM Check out the Radio Times for Peel tributes nest week (commencing Saturday 6th November) My favourite being The Sound of the Suburbs where he visits Robert Wyatt at The Fitties Near Cleethorpes. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,milk monitor Date: 02 Nov 04 - 06:55 PM Just heard this yesterday. Sad, sad news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio3_aod.shtml?andykershaw Radio 3 is playing Andy Kershaw's tribute to John Peel on the above unblue link...it will be available until the weekend I think. As he says, " Instead of a minutes silence lets have an hour and three quarters of noise." And the Undertones have just confirmed for next yrs Glastonbury. He'll be missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: YorkshireYankee Date: 02 Nov 04 - 12:37 PM Very kind MM, thanks. BTW, you may or may not have noted it's changed (slightly) since I sang it Fri night. If you've fine tuned it yourself, I'd be very interested to know how you've tweaked it. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Nov 04 - 07:52 AM Don't be so modest, Yorkshire Yankee! Your tribute is definitely worth singing, and after hearing you sing it last Friday in Sheffield I'd thought it keen enough to be considering a bit of fine tuning meself. Will keep you posted! Meanwhile, all power to your gift for parody! |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: YorkshireYankee Date: 01 Nov 04 - 08:53 PM Alan, very pleased to hear it – good of you to let me know. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Firecat Date: 01 Nov 04 - 07:08 PM I've heard a rumour that Sanctuary Records might be rereleasing Teenage Kicks as a tribute to him. I hope it's true, I'd definitely buy it. I used to listen to him before I went to sleep. John Peel on weekdays and the Top 40 on Sunday were the only things I listened to Radio 1 for. I don't think I'll bother now. Rest In Peace, John. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Lanfranc Date: 01 Nov 04 - 06:51 PM Yorkshire Yankee, your update to "John Peel" went down very well at Blackmore, where we sang it as the last song of the evening. Thanks again Alan |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,viylejunkie Date: 01 Nov 04 - 01:38 PM I've always admired John Peel without actually liking his broadcasts. Although a man of incredible integrity, I found his music programmes unlistenable - one hour of obscure shit to find a gem? It was never worth it. Home Truths was dull beyond belief. I never liked his voice, either. However, working as he did in a medium dominated by wankers, he was the genuine article. The music was always first. He never considered himself to more important than the music and he never talked over the music, either. I felt a greater loss when Alexis Korner died because his programmes, quite frankly, were better, and I loved his voice. Teenage Kicks, however, was a great pop record. I wonder if his record collection will now be sold on eBay by his wife, Shelia? |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: s6k Date: 01 Nov 04 - 01:13 PM some moron who writes for the mirror wrote an extremely rude article about Peel today, saying he preferred tony blackburn, and people who make Peel out to be a hero of music are idiots. It made me very angry and I think I will write in to him and complain at his stupid comments. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Brian Hoskin Date: 01 Nov 04 - 11:07 AM I still can't believe this. It does feel a bit like losing a family member or a good friend. Brian |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: YorkshireYankee Date: 01 Nov 04 - 06:58 AM Thanks very much, McG of H. Lanfranc, I'm chuffed to have someone (besides me) think it's worth singing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 01 Nov 04 - 03:49 AM Latest I heard was that he wanted his collection to go the the National Sound Archive at the British Library, subject to his family being able to afford it. It would be a shame to split it up. RtS (see, dear, there are people with more records than me!) |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Lanfranc Date: 01 Nov 04 - 03:05 AM I like that, too. I'll use it at Blackmore tonight if I can get past the lump in my throat and the tear in my eye! Thanks YY Alan |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Oct 04 - 08:57 PM I like that. Very singable. (Less likely to cause dissent than the original song, too.) |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: YorkshireYankee Date: 31 Oct 04 - 08:49 PM Chorus: Did ye ken John Peel with his wit so droll Did ye ken John Peel with his music bold Did ye ken John Peel and the truths he told Oh so early on Saturday morning Well I heard John Peel on the BBC And I knew when he spoke it was meant for me And I always thought he would ever be On the air every Saturday morning Chorus Did ye ken John Peel with his gravelly voice Did ye ken John Peel with his bands of choice You can call it hip; you can call it noise But you never could say it was boring Chorus Did ye ken John Peel and his modest ways Did ye ken his sublimely eclectic taste Did ye stay up nights far too many days Though ye still had to work in the morning Chorus Do ye ken John still does a brilliant show But ye won't find it on the radio Now he spins his tunes where they all have soul But we'll miss him on Saturday morning Chorus |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: s6k Date: 29 Oct 04 - 06:41 AM they are auctioning his record collection off each record has Peel's notes on the cover, 3 asterisks meant it must be played. He had to extend his house just so he could fit them all in! up to now, a radio station has offered £1 million. The New Bands Tent at Glastonbury, is to be renamed the John Peel Stage. I for once, loved Peel at Glastonbury, and looked forward to seeing him presenting it every year almost as much as the event himself. He was stoned one year!!!! The BBC are going to do a tribute of some sort to him, after discussing it with his family. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: rich-joy Date: 28 Oct 04 - 11:41 PM I too enjoyed his programmes when I lived in England - and I am still the proud owner of a John Peel's "Archive Things" LP (1970) which introduced interesting snippets from around the musical world - taken from the BBC Archives - and from when "World Music" (as it later came to be known) was still hard-to-get ... Vale, John. Cheers! R-J in Oz |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Ralphie Date: 28 Oct 04 - 07:38 PM MoorleyMan. Of Course...Bill Oddie..thanks for the reminder!! Mary Ann and Lamacq have just played "You don't bring me flowers".. Hit listen again on the Beeb website. Cheers Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: alanabit Date: 28 Oct 04 - 04:09 PM In the late eighties I met Viktor, a musician from Lenningrad, who was in Köln briefly as part of a project which brought Russian musicains over to this city. He told me about his band, who in their pre Gorbachev days were considered to be "criminal". They were arrested by the KGB after every gig, which he accepted as an occupational hazard! Viktor knew of John Peel, because he played their home made tapes on the air. John Peel was the true champion of the outsiders - of the musicians who do not have the powerful media and financial pull to get them past the the ring fenced barriers, which effectively bar the way of most musicians to any form of airplay. He made mistakes, but he was quite entitled to. That was part of his integrity. I'll take John Peel any day against the spineless, sanitised salesmen of mainstream radio. Rest in peace John. You will be sadly missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: MoorleyMan Date: 28 Oct 04 - 08:19 AM Yeah Ralphie I recall that parody too - it was written by Bill Oddie I suspect, and I believe it came out on a final-series episode of the radio show I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, in a sketch called Radio Mindless which (you guessed it) lampooned Wunderful Radio One with a bludgeon. (In those days I thought it a bit cruel and a bit out-of-time but it's mild stuff compared ....) |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: VIN Date: 28 Oct 04 - 07:36 AM Listening to Andy Kershaw tell how he met John recently and how the move of his late night show to the early hours (1am i think he said)was taking its toll on john, really shocked me. When you hear some of the absolute 'pop' shite (in my opinion) that has been spewed out by national radio (radion 1 in particular) over the years by some so-called DJ's who were not fit to be allowed near a turntable; and you consider how they've treated people like John Peel (& kershaw himself) i.e sidelining them to the remote hours or another station is a shocking disgrace. Peel did more for the furtherence of quality comtempory (& our traditional) music over the last 40 years than anyone else in the medial. Ok so they carried on employing him and John being loyal was happy to stay on but they could have treated him better at the latter end of his career i reckon. But p'raps i'm being naive to expect that this megga 'conservative', music industry/money driven media of ours could ever change. After all look how it treats our traditional music. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 28 Oct 04 - 05:33 AM It was John Peel that helped the Folk world as well by telling people about Martin Carthy and The strawbs and other folk people.People tend to forget that. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Oct 04 - 06:52 PM Such sad news. I can't remember a time when I wasn't aware of this man and I can hear his voice so clearly now. He was so influential in the music field and gave so many artistes their start. It's difficult to think that he's gone, but he always will be around as long as we remember him. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Ralphie Date: 27 Oct 04 - 06:43 PM Peel always used to say about Walters that "They were like an old married couple for whom, sex, had long since become irrelevant!" Anyone who can listen now, hit the Radio 1 On line service. Mary Anne Hobbs is doing a 3 hour tribute. Just had the Peel session version of Soft Machines Moon in June. Essential. Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 27 Oct 04 - 09:36 AM The last time I was this stunned was when John Lennon died. It was rare for me to miss his Top Gear programme all of those years ago. His diversity of music is why my record collection is so wide and varied plus the reason any self penned music is the same. Thanks John. I wonder if you're socialising with your own long departed idols now? |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 27 Oct 04 - 09:24 AM I was saddened too. I found his voice one of the best on radio and on tv voice-overs. I didn't share his taste in modern bands but he also liked the odd folkie and also old blues men like M.John Hurt & Bo Diddley. His non-DJ persona as indulgent father and sympathetic interviewer made him seem a really nice guy. He will be reunited with John Walters, now , a great combination. RtS |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:59 AM And the thing about that "How refreshing to meet a waitress who won't serve you a second cup of coffee because, in her words, she can't be arsed" is that from pretty well anyone else on the radio it woudld have been meant sarcastically. But with John you know he meant what he said - relishing the oddity of life, taking pleasure in the waitress's insistance on being a person, with her touch of bloody mindedness, and proud that Liverpool hasn't rolled over and surrendered. |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,Dave Roberts, Salt Town poets Date: 27 Oct 04 - 06:57 AM I've just dredged up a couple of examples of John's style from the inner recesses of my mind. They won't look like much written down, but try to imagine them delivered in that unique, laid back, laconic style: 'I'd like to thank the gentleman who wrote to me this week suggesting that I was, in some strange way, an outdoor toilet facility.' and 'I went to Liverpool last week for the first time in years. How refreshing to meet a waitress who won't serve you a second cup of coffee because, in her words, she can't be arsed.' Dave Roberts |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Steve Parkes Date: 27 Oct 04 - 06:55 AM he's one of the very few of whom we can truly say "we shall not see his like again." I can't believe he's gone either. Steve |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: Ralphie Date: 27 Oct 04 - 05:44 AM There was a parody of "Dae Ya Ken John Peel" that I used to have.. Dae Ya ken John Peel With his voice so grey He sounds as if, he's far,far away He sends us to sleep at the end of the day To be woken up by Tony Blackburn in the morning! And, I've just found the tape of Blackburn/Peel's take of "You don't bring me flowers anymore" (c 1975) Sad Days indeed. Check out Kershaw on Radio 3 on Sunday Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,noddy Date: 27 Oct 04 - 05:40 AM A great loss to the music industry and to his family. One of a kind. Dae ye ken John Peel Aye EVERYODY does. Says it all. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: GUEST,gadaffi Date: 27 Oct 04 - 03:47 AM In the early 1970's when I was into Floyd, Zeppelin and blues-based music, John Peel was playing Finbar and Eddie Furey, Trees, the Woods Band, the Albion Country Band (with Steve Ashley, Sue Draheim and Royston Wood in its line-up), and the Cheviot Ranters Country Dance Band. I was hooked! This is testimony to the breadth of John's musical foresight, and he will be sorely missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: John Peel [UK Radio Presenter] From: HuwG Date: 27 Oct 04 - 03:34 AM That's a sad loss. John Peel was always a friend to music, and musicians. His dry wit could also warm the most sodden of festival-goers. |
