Subject: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: GUEST,Schwartz's lover Date: 02 Nov 04 - 02:41 PM In another thread, Brucie said: "Eat once at Ben's and you will never be able to say that again. (Ben's is in Montreal, home of the steamie.) They make the best smoked meat sandwich in NORTH AMERICA." WRONG! Brucie. There is much better smoked meat in Montreal then the chemically treated stuff you get at Ben's. Schwartz's is the best. They make the best smoked meat sandwich in North America. The Main Deli is second best. Lester's is next, followed by the Snowdon Deli. Ben's follows somewhere after that. Out in the 'burbs, Abie's is owned by the son of the former manager of Schwartz's and is comprable. Smoked Meat Pete's is owned by the son of the owner of the Main Deli and is comprable. |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: DougR Date: 02 Nov 04 - 02:49 PM So exactly what is a smoked meat sandwich consist of in Montreal? Here in Arizona it would be smoked brisket or smoked pork (Butt, Brat, Polish sausage), or perhaps smoked chicken. Barbecue sause would be served on the side perhaps with a dill pickle. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: Peace Date: 02 Nov 04 - 02:59 PM GUEST,Schwartz's lover - I stand corrected. I have been to Schwartz's twice in my life, and you are absolutely right. I have never been to Smoked Meat Pete's, but then I haven't been to Montreal in two decades. However, Ben's still makes a great sandwich. |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: Once Famous Date: 02 Nov 04 - 03:00 PM Chicago which is the meat capitol of North America has nothing called "smoked meat." Briskit can be smoked and I am sure so can pork like ham and bacon is. But our hot dogs and popular sausages like Polish and Italian aren't. Do you use an ashtray when you are smoking meat? |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: Peace Date: 02 Nov 04 - 03:08 PM Zig Zag Papers. Smoked meat is beef brisket. It's really good. |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: GUEST,Charmion at work Date: 02 Nov 04 - 03:24 PM Smoked meat -- also available at Nate's Delicatessen in Ottawa -- is beef brisket that is slow-cooked in a cooling bread oven (hence its traditional association with delicatessens that also produce bagels and rye bread) and then marinated in brine containing a complex (and generally secret) spice mix. A smoked meat sandwich is a thick stack of thinly sliced meat wedged between slices of light rye bread spread with mustard, served with a large kosher dill pickle and perhaps a paper cup of coleslaw with vinegar dressing. And a beer -- Molson's. The smoked meat sandwich is a great work of proletarian art. |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: Once Famous Date: 02 Nov 04 - 04:01 PM OK, here in Chi town this is not a deli item but rightfully a Bar B Q restaurant item. We call this Bar B Q beef. It is served on a bun sliced paper thin and is usually dressed with bar b q sauce. Yum. I want one now. |

Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: Once Famous Date: 02 Nov 04 - 05:31 PM Smoked salmon is lox, ale schmale. Real menschs eat it on a bagel with cream cheese, onion, and tomato. |
Subject: RE: BS: smoked meat in Montreal From: GUEST,MarkS Date: 02 Nov 04 - 07:35 PM And in Montreal, you do not ask for lean. The fatter the better. Something about cold temperatures and the French language which neutralizes Quebec cholesterol. Oh yes - if you have never eaten Montreal smoked meat, make a special trip there. You will not be disappointed! Mark |
