Subject: Lyrics to: Marty Feldman's 'French Song'
From: GUEST,Jim

Is there a site with the words (or does anyone know) to Marty Feldman's 1970'71 LP of funny songs? There is one in particular I want. It was Marty giving a description of a French song he was going to sing, and decides not to because the translation lost too much of the song's meaning. Can anyone help?
Jim

Here's a short biography of Marty Feldman. It lists two recordings:

"I Feel a Song Going Off" (British Decca)
"Marty" (Pye)

Another site gives this information:

Marty Feldman
45s:
Joyous Time of Year/The B Side -1968
Funny He Never Married/Travel Agency -1968
LPs:
I Feel a Song Going Off - 1969
Marty - 1968
The Crazy World of Marty Feldman

I found several sites that offer used copies for sale, but no lyrics, and no track listings of the albums.

I have that LP on cassette and still occasionally sing 'Is it wrong to love an elephant' ...

I can't see the tape amongst the home collection, so I guess it's at work. If I can find it I will put the words to the French one on here.

Dear Jim

Found the tape. It still makes me laugh and there's one or two songs in there that might yet turn out to be a Christmas party piece !!

The 'French translation' recital is as follows ...

"My Next song is a translation of a good old French poem. It tells the story of a young lad who, believing the world to be his oyster, kisses his childhood sweetheart goodbye and sets off for Paris, fame and fortune.

The second verse tells of his disolution as he sits surrounded by all the symbols of material success and yearns for the days when he found joy in the simple things: the scent of new mown hay after rain, the glint of the summer sun on a brook, the touch of Yvette's lips on his own ...

He asks himself, has he gained or lost?

The song song loses a little of its impact in translation.

In fact, it loses a lot.

In fact, the Hell with it. Lets not do it"

If you need any other words from the tape, just ask.

Cheers, Helen.

Helen: Do you mean to say the actual title of the piece is "FRENCH TRANSLATION"?

Sorry Jim - I should have explained. I am ashamed to say that the tape I have is just a copy someone made for me back in the 70's. I have no track listings or credits

I'm not proud of being involved in illicit copying, but I guess I was young, poor and ignorant then ... At least I'm not young anymore ...!

Thanks Helen. Sorry for the delay getting back. Have been up North in Queensland. Don't worry about previous posting, it's just the words I wanted. If I could indulge you to post the words to "Dear District Miss Hargreaves"(?) I would be MOST grateful. The other song I do from that album is the "Five to Eleven Waltz" which I often do at the end of a night. The crowd (sometimes)love it!
Cheers
Jim

Firstly, Jim ... I apologise. I must have missed mudcatting for a couple of days when you asked for 'District Nurse Hargreaves'. Will put them on ASAP.

Secondly - Rick I also have the spoken album that contains 'Funny he never married' and other classics ('I am a kind god', 'The travel Agent' etc.) I'm off to Germany this weekend, so will post transcript when I get back. If I haven't put words up by Wednesday, do a refresh to remind me!

Cheers. Helen.

Subject: Lyr Add: FUNNY HE NEVER MARRIED (Marty Feldman)
From: GUEST,Helen
Date: 08 Aug 05 - 12:48 PM

Ok, this is a bit of an epic and if anyone reads this who can't picture Marty Feldman putting on his 'old man' voice, it probably, won't make sense. To set the scene, two old boys are reminiscing after a friend's funeral. Voice 1 is Tim Brooke Taylor, Voice 2 in Marty Feldman. I've missed out a lot of the thoughtful 'yes-es and no-s' as they run over speech and are by and large atmospheric.

1. It was a good funeral ...
2. Yes, we give him a good send off ...
1. Yes ...
2. No man could want more ...
1. No, no ...
2. He was a good man, George. We won't see his like again.
1. Salt of the earth, was George. Yes he was ...
(pause)
2. Funny he never married.
1. Yes. ... who?
2. George.
1. Ah yes ...
2. I mean, it's not that he never had his chances
(chortling)
2. Oh, when he was young ... a man like that ... could have had any he'd chosen. Good looking enough.
1. Yes, yes he was ... almost too good looking.
2. Almost too good looking. Them big blue eyes. Them dimples ... yes, and that school girl complexion of his ... could have had any girl he chose.
1. ...any girl he chose
2. ... man like that. Funny he never married.
1. Yes, funny that.
2. Still, still ... he had his compensations.
1. Yes I suppose he did.
2. Other interests. Scouting ...
1. He was very keen on scouting, wasn't he.
2. ... scouting. Even in his later years, he'd only have to see a troop of scouts go by and his eyes would light up.
1. Nostalgia ... I suppose.
2. I suppose, yes ...
(pause)
2. Funny he never married.
1. Yes, funny that, yes.
2. He was a funny chap in many ways, when you think about it.
1. He was quite, yes ...
2. The way he walked.
1. Ah yes ...
2. That was funny.
1. With his hips ...
2. And his voice ...
1. High pitched sort of voice.
2. Oh, almost to the point of falsetto, yes ... Oh that was funny, yes. He was funny, yes ... But kind, kind ...
1. Oh, he was very kind, yes.
2. Kind, kind, kind ... Almost too kind. He let his-self be taken advantage of ... I never knew him turn a stranger away from his door. There was always a bed in his house for any waif or stray ...
1. Yes, yes ...
2. Or soldier ...
1. Yes ...
2. Or sailor.
1. Especially sailors.
2. He liked sailors.
1. Never, never knew him turn a sailor away.
2. Never a sailor, no. Quite often they didn't even have to come to him.
1. Yes ...
2. No, he'd go out looking for them, he would. Never spared himself
1. No, no ...
2. Funny he never married. Man like that.
1. He'd have made a good husband.
2. Oh he would, oh, oh ...
1. A very good husband ...
2. A very good husband, there's no gainsaying that. He could cook...
1. He could sew ...
2. He could knit ...
1. Yes, yes ... He could arrange flowers.
2. Oh, oh his house, his house ... It was like a new pin ...
1. Like a shiny new pin.
2. New pin, new pin ...
1. Yes, yes it was ...
(pause)
2. Funny he never married. He was a happy man.
1. Yes, yes he was.
2. He was a happy man.
1. He was, he was ...
2. Yes, Yes. Never happier than when he was dressing up.
1. Theatrical streak, I suppose.
2. I suppose ...
1. Yes ...
2. How he loved that mother of pearl handbag.
1. Almost broke his heart, it did, when he left it on the bus.
2. He loved dressing up, yes.
1. Yes ...
2. All in all it's, er ... funny he never married.
1. Funny - You never married.

There. Told you it was an epic.

Bad news about 'District nurse Hargreaves' though. My 30-year-old cassette seems to have wiped itself clean since I last listened to it. Sorry.

Rambling Syd: Now let us all burst forth together - so grundle your parts and away we go…

(To the tune of 'Green Grow The Rushes O')

Rambling Syd:
I'll sing you one oh,
Green grow my nadgers oh!

What is your one-oh?

Rambling Sid:
One's the grunge upon my splod
Masking my cordwangle.

I'll sing you two-oh!
Green grow my nadgers oh.

Chorus:
What is your two-oh?

Two are my looming thrums -
See how they jangle,
One's the grunge upon my splod
Masking my cordwangle.

I'll sing you three-oh!
Green grow my nadgers oh.

Chorus:
What is your three-oh?

Rambling Syd:
Three are the times I've lunged my groats,

See how they jangle,
One's the grunge upon my splod
Masking my cordwangle.

I'll sing you five-oh!
Green grow my nadgers oh.

Chorus:
What are your five-oh?

Rambling Syd:
Five are the wogglers up my spong,
Four for my whirdlers bent - oh,
Three are the times I've lunged my groats,
Two are my looming thrums - see how they jangle
One's the grunge upon my splod -
It's ruined my cordwangle!

A word to the wise: If you want to request a different song than the one that's being discussed here, it's best to start a new thread. That's assuming you've done a search of existing threads and found no thread about the song you want.

The page that Forsh linked to gives this information:

A couple of slight corrections from what Helen has posted above: (sorry!)

FRENCH FOLKSONG
(Denis King, John Junkin)

"My Next song is a translation of a good old French poem. It tells the story of a young lad who, believing the world to be his oyster, kisses his childhood sweetheart goodbye and sets off for Paris, fame and fortune.

The second verse tells of his disillusion as he sits surrounded by all the symbols of material success and yearns for the days when he found joy in the simple things: the scent of new mown hay after rain, the glint of the summer sun on a brook, the touch of Yvette's lips on his own ...

He asks himself, has he gained or lost?

The song loses a little of its impact in translation.

In fact, it loses a lot.

In fact, the Hell with it. Lets not do it"

Performed by Marty Feldman on "The Crazy World of Marty Feldman" (Decca SPA 134) previously released as "I Feel A Song Going Off" (LK/SKL 4983)

It's funny how I can sit here, not remembering "Funny he never Married" in the slightest. Until I started reading the words, then the voices and the faces returned.

With the threads on Marty Feldman, I am very intrigued, now. I would like to get a copy of his famous album, but searches don't find it for me. Anyone have any leads? CD would be best, but I can deal with a (good condition) LP or cassette, too. (Don't ask!) Thanks.
