Subject: Lyr Add: SCOTLAND YET From: Swave N. Deboner Date: 06 Dec 04 - 01:36 PM This poem, written by Henry Scott Riddell and set to music by P. MacLeod, should be in the running for the Scottish National Anthem. It stirs my blood, and I'm just a Yank with Scots lineage. Scotland Yet (written by Henry Scott Riddell and set to music by P. MacLeod) Gae bring my guid auld harp ance mair, Gae bring it free and fast, For I maun sing anither sang Ere a' my glee be past; An' trow ye, as I sing, my lads, The burden o't shall be -- Auld Scotland's howes, and Scotlands knowes, And Scotland's hills for me; I'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three! The heath waves wild upon her hill And foaming through the fells, Her fountains sing of freedom still, As they dash down the dells; For weel I loe the land, my lads, That's girded by the sea -- Then Scotland's vales, and Scotland's dales, And Scotland's hills for me; I'll drink a caup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three! The thistle wags upon the fields Where Wallce bare his blade, That gave her foemen's dearest blude, To dye her auld grey plaid; And looking to the lift, my lads, He sang this doughty glee -- Auld Scotland's richt, and Scotland's micht, And Scotlant's hills for me; I'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi a' the honours three! They tell o' lan's wi' brichter skies, Where freedom's voice ne'er rang; Gie me the lan' where Ossian dwelt, And Colla's minstrel sang -- For I've nae skill o' lans', my lads, That kenna to be free -- Then Scotland's richt, and Scotland's micht, And Scotland's hills for me; I'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three! Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Scotland Yet From: Boab Date: 07 Dec 04 - 02:45 AM So you are a member of the "Craft" Swave N. Deboner? No matter ---it would indeed be a good choice. It brings back old memories too, of my youth in South Ayrshire, where it was --and still is---a "standard". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Scotland Yet From: Swave N. Deboner Date: 07 Dec 04 - 09:13 AM Boab - By the "Craft", I assume you mean the music trade. I'm just another IT professional with a deep love of music. I've written a few songs, none ever published. I sing (fairly good, or so I'm told), and play keyboards, whistle, sax, trumpet, and all the clarinets (E flat through contrabass). I aspire to one day play the Highland Pipes, and to participate in a session with Scots and/or Irish folkies. Never made a penny for performing, which probably disqualifies me from being a member, unless there's such a thing as unpaid (amatuer) members. At any rate, I first heard "Scotland Yet" shortly after I'd been to a website where folk could vote for their choice for the Scottish national anthem. I saw the resurrected thread on "Flower of Scotland" here on the 'Cat yesterday, and it just promted me to start this thread. I don't expect many posts to it. Just wanted to find out if there were any bonafide Scottish Nationalists who think the song has merit. Cheers SNB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Scotland Yet From: Boab Date: 07 Dec 04 - 03:55 PM Well, Swave N.,you hit the bull's-eye with your "bona-fide Scottish Nationalist", which was more, seemingly, than I did with my "member of the Craft"! I am, indeed a member of the Scottish National Party. The Craft to which I refer has little to do with music, other than the fact that its members are like everyone else---they tend to enjoy good music. No---the song has strong Masonic connections in Scotland.I was "conned" into a suspicion that you were similarly connected! 'Nuff said!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Scotland Yet From: GUEST Date: 07 Dec 04 - 03:58 PM so - maybe some more information - WHEN was it written and set to music? Tune? |
