Yep, it's a guilty pleasure for me. My teens corrupted me. I figured that if they had to try stuff that I put in front of them, then it was only fair that I do the same. Thank heavens for taping things from the telivision onto videotape, since most of this stuff is on 'way after my beditme. Some of the music is wonderful, and some is a strange choice to accompany any kind of program. Anybody else out there?

I love it...some get annoying, but possibly due to not translating well to english...but others have a really good story to them too...

Some of it is Capital A Art. Most are comic books. It will be outlawed soon because the best work I've seen is either grim or obscene.

I confess as an (elderly) British female I know little of Manga or Anime but I have loved listening to the reading of "Wrong About Japan" the Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4 this week.

My youngest is a fan. Akira and Galaxy Express are two that I recall, which to my mind, are masterpieces of the genre.

Oh lessee...I'm not as big an anime geek as some of my friends but my current favorites are Full Metal Alchemist, Ruroni Kenshin, Trigun, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop and .Hack/Sign...I've watched a few episodes of Witch Hunter Robin and while artistically it is quite lovely I find it a bit too dark for my tastes. Wolf's Rain what I saw of it was also very good. I also watched part of The Mysterious Play which was quite entertaining and I wouldn't mind seeing more of it. I've also been watching Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex but the jury's still out on that one. Animatrix when it came on Adult Swim was also quite good artsy-wise.

The style of the art is what also attracts me to it...the storylines can get a bit hokey but overall they have a good record for originality. I have to say Trigun is my favorite for its weird blend of dead serious and insanely comic.

Trigun is my favourite anime as well, Bebop and Ghost in the Shell are close in second and third. I don't watch most of the Adult Swim anime anymore, I don't really like anything they show. Studio Ghibli films are wonderful too, especially Spirited Away (I doubt I will ever get tired of that movie) and Kiki's Delivery Service.
Cosplay (the making and wearing of anime costumes) is one of my hobbies, even though I tend to plan more than actually make them...

Most of my friends are Otaku like me. (A word used to refer to an obsessed fan (usu. of anime)- taken as complimentary by some, as insulting by others. Kind of like calling someone a nerd- some people don't mind it.)

We've been following it since the last invasion in the eighties. With some it was actually from memories while we were kids. Shows like Speed Racer, Kimba, Marine Boy etc.
THen it was StarBlazers (Space Battleship Yamamoto) and G-Foce (also known as Ninja Force Gatchaman and Battle of the Planets).
I'd recommend the early adventures of Tank Police if you like to laugh. As far as Manga goes I like the AI Love You series, Psychic Academy, Tri-gun and Naruto.

My kids spend all their money on manga, and How to Draw Manga books and special pens. They've become purists - they no longer care about watching Inuyasha on tv because the tv series is "not as good" as the books. They call themselves otaku. I like most of it, but I'm no otaku, although I'm sort of hooked on the Hakira No Go series.

I quite like some of the Manga stuff out there. Oh My Goddess and Sailor Moon are funny. I like the artist Jill Thompson's work, especially Death: At Deaths Door. good stuff!

There is (apparently) according to the Peter carey book, an old tradition in Japan for public story tellers who's prime function was to sell sweets to the listeners afterwards. One of the main authors of Manga, during an interview, claimed that this tradition is continued and that both Manga and Anime's main purpose is to sell toys based on the characters - not too far from Disney then after all?

Whew, there's more than I was afraid there'd be. *g* Cartoon Network (USA)was my jumping off point as well. You're right, Moonglow, the station's not what it might be. However, they're showing host in the Shell and Full Metal Alchemist, and they did a one-time of Read or Die that I enjoyed. Bibliophilia meets magical transfiguration - what's not to like? I tend toward the things I've seen for free as I'm not in the habit of buying a $15-$30 DVD on the chance that I might like it. Non-tv exceptions in the family stash are Fruits Basket (Crystal, I think you'd like this one), a romantic comedy that I was happily surprised with, Hellsing (great soundtrack!), and Saiyuki. This is the one where I found that the DVD subtitles have options of either a more or less literal translation from the Japanese or a translation into American English. The spoken dialog of n argument has one character saying "You don't respect your elders, do you?". The subtitle says something like, "Do what I say or I'll shove this beer can up"...well you get the idea. It's great.
Thanks for the suggestions for things I haven't seen yet. I'm off to the video store!

I run an anime club at my high school. I recommend:
Anime:
1. Record of Lodoss War/Lodoss to Senki OAV or TV (Legend of the Heroic Knight)- Tolkien-ish fantasy, but with decent female characters.
2. The Slayers- comic fantasy. Main characters are (and I quote): a smart-ass sorceress and a dumber-than-dirt swordsman.
3. Saiyuki- bizarre take on the Journey to the West saga. Also comic. Good action scenes and hilarious lines. And a dragon who turns into a jeep.
4. .hack//SIGN- fantasy/virtual reality setting. Slow plot advancement, but beautiful art and fantastic music.
5. Noir- Two female assassins in France trying to figure out who's messing with their lives. One can't remember who she is, the other knows too well who she is. Fabulous action scenes and also has good music.
6. Fushigi Yuugi- Hopelessly romantic, but the characters are so utterly loveable. About a girl who gets drawn into the fantasy world of this mystical book and ends up being one to fulfill a prophesy. Not very original, but well done.
Manga:
1. Anything by CLAMP. Tsubasa is good, Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knights Rayearth, CLAMP Campus Detectives. Very girly, though.
2. Ranma 1/2- Absolutely hilarious tale of a young martial artist who falls into an enchanted spring, so whenever he hits cold water, he turns into a girl. His father turns into a panda in the same situation. Obviously, this is a problem sometimes...
3. Rurouni Kenshin- Story set in late 1800s Japan about a incredible assasin named Himura Kenshin turned wandering swordsman. Kenshin has turned from a ruthless killer to a funny pushover. Especially by women. It's rather amusing.

On topic, the Fushigi Yuugi manga is also very good (similar to the anime), as is the manga Nadesico. I haven't seen the anime series.

The anime Vision of Escaflowne is a bizarre mix of fantasy and mechas. Note: If you see the movie, it is radically different from the series. Some characters are completely made over, and therefore, be prepared to be shocked. For example, the pretty blonde princess Millerna becomes a brunette amazon. But both anime and movie are good, the series story is better, but the movie has great music, action, and a darker ambiance (spelling?).

Blacklist: Fatal Fury 1 and 2: Lamest anime movies I have ever seen. The action is downright stupid, and the losing martial artists always end up... in ponds. Plot is as lame as the action. Just don't watch them, it's not worth your time. There's lots better stuff out there.

Hi, Sal. If you've read Journey to the West, Saiyuki is even funnier. And in JTTW, the dragon turned into a horse to carry Priest Sanzo, so the jeep was a logical update.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned FLCL yet.

Somebody out there want to explain FLCL (I've heard it pronounced FLEA KlEE and FULy Kully). It was interesting but absurd and I must have missed enough that it made no sense.

Speed Racer qualifies.

I prefer the space operas but they don't seem to be doing them lately.

The meaning of the phrase Fooley Cooley altered in every episode, probably with each use. Sometimes it was a noun, sometimes a verb. The show had/has what I suppose you'd call an absurdist plot (I'm too lazy to look up the definition, but you get the idea). If you can sort of ignore the stuff growing out of the protagonist's head and the alien guitar playing housekeeper and just follow the plotline about the high school kid (I forget his name; the main character) to the end of the series, the plot makes sense in the end.
