Well in the spirit of Yule, I'll go first. We need a nice postive thread after all the recent nippy ones. I've learned the value of true friendship and love from someone who means more to me than I can ever say but I suspect he knows!!!! *****BG****
I have learned to pace myself and realise its okay sometimes not to push onesself to the limits but to take it easy
I have learned to distance myself from people who would be detrmental to my health and well being...its quite acceptable to walk away

so come on you lot.......what have you learned this year that you'd like to share

I've also learned how to make really good barbecue.

I've learned if you can't beat 'em, you don't have to join 'em...it's okay to walk away.

I've learned, just recently, I am an orphan.:-)

How fun it is to have a baby in the house after so many years of grown-up kids.

How deeply held and appreciated certain friendships are and that my choice of life partner is reaffirmed as the right choice, year after year...26 this spring, with 25 as married in March.

How to turn loose and let adult children do their thing without my hair turning white.

I am gratefull.

Everything I learned this year, I learned last year. I just learned it a little better this year. The most important thing I'm slowly learning better is my limitations. My greatest limitation is changing. And, if I have so much trouble changing myself, why would I be so foolish to think that I could change someone else? Or even know what they should do with their lives? I have my hands full just trying to figure out what I should do with mine.

Some of the greatest revelations in life are just warmed over revelations that have already been revealed a thousand times.

3.I'm too old to do either of the above again without some very strong incentive.

1. Happiness is a newly adopted kitten purring in your lap.
2. You can teach an old 'dawg new tricks (if he wants to learn).
3. If you treat others with respect, they will pretty much always respect you.
4. Even if they do not, it really doesn't matter.
5. Especially if you have a newly adopted kitten purring in your lap.

Okay, so none of those was original, and I didn't just learn them this year. But I sure was reminded of them.

I learned how to drain the water from my hot-water heating system. I learned how to add rust retardant to the gravity fed reservoir. I learned how to replace valves. I learned that everytime I do something new I am apprehensive but that I am quite capable.

I learned that I can climb the ladder and clean the eaves and that if I don't look down I'm not afraid.

I learned that the effects of malnutrition on the brain are irreversible.

I learned that I still have lots to learn.

I've learned quite a lot about the care and feeding of blackwater tanks and hoses that come with travel trailers. I have learned that blackwater does not flow uphill, and that if there isn't a natural sloping hill for your hose, you have to be the hill yourself. And I've learned that periodically, no matter how much tank treatment you use, sometimes you have to give the tank a good flushing out with fresh water.

I learned that you can start again, regardless of what others tell you.

I learned that I'm not a hypochondriac, there really is a problem, and I should have gone on to private health care!

I learned that the best friend is the one who buys you extra batteries.

I also learned that I can too be 40 and go to a rock gig and not be out of place.... surrouneded by teenyboppers from 11yrs up, to someone's dad, who was at least 50 - and we were ALL boogying, clapping and bouncing around!

And learn new ones.
But you'll miss your friends, 'cause it's never the same as when they sing them.

I am reminded how amazing your kids can be and what interesting people they become as they grow.

I learned how to use my circular saw better this year (lots of practice) and next year I want to learn to use my router and radial arm saw.

And I have just begun the long and eminently satisfying exercise in converting tape recordings into digital files to burn to CD. My children are becoming familiar with their grandfather all over again as they hear him sing so many of his songs. "It's nice to hear that song sung the right way," one of them remarked last week (of his particular version of "The Outlandish Knight"). They'll learn that there can be many good versions of things, but it's also okay to have favorites.

that being at a music festival and being able to enjoy the music
while snuggling with someone is very satisfying.

but if that someone is deceiving you, it is possible(and adviseable)
to break away from the relationship and go on alone.

that having a dog as a companion can be better than

I learned quite a bit this year:

I learned that I need to trust my gut more often.

I learned that sometimes it takes a long time for an apology to be meaningful.

I learned that it's okay to lean on people for support sometimes.

That's a pretty good start for what I've learned this year.

Good thread, folks!

I've learned that I've forgotten a fair bit, but it's ok.

I've learned that I am still willing to take chances, and accept failure when it comes.

I've learned that I'm usually alright when I trust my instincts...even if they take a while to kick in.

I've learned once again that my friends are my greatest treasure.

I've learned that I need to be more social, and probably need to make a move from here. Both of these really itimidate me, but that's not such a bad thing...without challenges we stagnate.

I've learnt to be silly again. With advancing years I find that I don't care any more if people think that I am going bonkers. There are, obviously, times when one has to be serious and learned and use some of that accrued wisdom and knowledge that age supposedly infers. But, on the whole, I like being silly now and then and fortunately often seem to find myself in the company of like minded others both in the real world and here within cyberworld of the electric word sending machine.

I've learned that life after divorce can be even better than it was when I was married...that independence is a wonderful thing.
That giving is much more rewarding than receiving.
Supporting others brings exceptional rewards.
Forgiveness of others takes a weight off MY shoulders.
Sharing love with everyone makes me feel good.
Best wishes.

I also re-affirmed but there is nothing so good as a true and supportive friend.

Important lesson for the year:

      Always write stuff down.

The action of writing it down helps you to remember it, and even if you don't, it's written down.
My best example of this in in the kitchen. I now keep a notebook for all the known food allergies and dislikes for everbody I can think of. Gains you an reputation as a considerate chef rather fast.

That Curmudgeon and I have an incredible bunch of friends. (I knew that before, but we REALLY know it now!)

That medical people, from nurse's aides to surgeons and everyone in between are truly wonderful people. I don't know how they do it all AND keep smiling and son't seem to get burned out with all the giving.

That "Big Corporate Medicine" can be truly generous when the recipient has nothing.

That even if the person in the hospital is feeling ill and not the slightest bit social, a friend popping 'round the door, saying "hi" and letting you know they're thinking about you, is very much appreciated. Especially if said visitor, realizing that the patient feels ill and not at all sociable or wanting to entertain a visitor, spreads good wishes and quickly leaves. But putting in an appearance helps!

I learned that there are people who prefer the hope of better times, to the reality of getting there.

I learned that not all people make it.

I learned that good things given can take years to kick in for the recipient.

I learned that there is no way to predict who will make it, and who won't, before I help them-- that many who seem on the verge of making it will not in fact make it, ever, and that many who seem like complete failures turn things around, sometimes quite efficiently... and that one cannot offer help based on whether one thinks it will do any good, because one never can really tell.

I learned that it's not up to me to try determine what is best for others, but to let others make that determination for themselves... to not judge the paths othes choose (either by accident or by design), because I am not omniscient, and I simply don't know what is best for them. I only know what is best for myself. And I learned that the people I care about deserve no less than my unconditional love and support for them and for whatever choices they make in their lives.

I went through four heavy years. really heavy. 2003 was okay, but I was pretty wound up by the events of the previous four years.

During 2004 year I have come to terms with the experiences of those four years, as much as you can, and have put them in a bundle on the way. I am still walking forward, and am valuing and focussing on the loved ones and good friends I have. I have had a good year, I feel a bit healed, and things are good. I somehow know that this next year will be good, whatever happens. And I wish the best for other people going through tough times, that they will come through and feel some hope and peace in their lives again.
