Subject: please, explain FESTIVIS From: GUEST,Ar Thieme Date: 11 Dec 04 - 01:30 PM Our local paper asked 5 students, "Does your family have an artificial or real Christmas tree?" One response was, "My familt doesn't celebrate Christmas, so we don't have a tree. We celebrate Festivis with a pole instead of a tree." Admittedly, I live under a rock, but I never heard of Festivis. Could someone please explain. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: Sorcha Date: 11 Dec 04 - 01:36 PM Apparently, it's from Seinfeld. |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 11 Dec 04 - 02:08 PM I never watched Seinfeld except for one or two shows which was when I decided I didn't like it much. But this is a nice take on the holidays. I am surprised that this kid had the wherewithall to pull this off and get it printed in the paper. He said it with a straight face--and they bit. It's one of very few time I've noticed any display of humor in this paper. Then again, maybe it's his parents---who actually have substituted Festivis for Christmas in their home as a protest of sorts. Either way, it's interesting. And a happy one to you all!!! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 11 Dec 04 - 03:05 PM While it is a joke, it has started to catch on. Ben & Jerry's came out with a Festivus flavor a few years ago. Festivus for the rest of us. I loved Seinfeld because it was so unique. A show about nothing, but it captured nothing brilliantly! Probably a bit more urban than most shows, but if you live in NYC you "get it" instantly. |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: SINSULL Date: 11 Dec 04 - 04:24 PM I set up a Festivus Pole in the Mudcat Tavern. We will be reciting our complaints about other people's behavior for the past year and holding the Feats of Strength bout - where children get to try to beat up their parents and fail - closer to the actual holiday. Festivus for the Rest of Us! |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 12 Dec 04 - 11:26 AM Very interesting. Thanks folks. Art |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: SINSULL Date: 12 Dec 04 - 11:41 AM So, Art, do you want to join in the fun? Anyone annoy you this year? This is the time to get it off your chest. I for one want to comment on the utter stupidity of American voters and their decision to vote for fear mongering instead of brains. I also want to let the Democrats know that they F**Ked up AGAIN! by following babybush's keepers' instead of actively setting the campaign agenda. You really screwed up guys! Happy Festivus! |

Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: PoppaGator Date: 12 Dec 04 - 07:09 PM Our local weekly Farmer's Market advertised their pre-holidays promotion as "Festivus." I was only a little surprised that most people seemed to understand. Let me know when it's time to start the Airing of the Grievances! |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: Joybell Date: 12 Dec 04 - 07:26 PM hello art, hildebrand here. my pocket latin dictionary defines Festivus as: "gay, jolly, delightful; (speech) humorous." it's from the noun/adjective Festus: "festal, on holiday; holiday, feast, Matt Dillon's deputy." speaking of that, did you know that ken curtis (festus)had a beautiful tenor voice, had been a member of the sons of the pioneers, and before that a swingband singer with one of the dorseys or woody herman or one of those? now i've turned it into a music thread. ha! all the best, hildebrand |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: SINSULL Date: 12 Dec 04 - 07:49 PM Airing of the Grievances? I started already. Uncle Festus was a Son of the Pioneers? Damn! I thought he was a member of the Adams Family. |
Subject: RE: please explain FESTIVIS From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 12 Dec 04 - 10:00 PM Sinsull, Alas, we did what we could. Onward and upward, Greg, Yeah, ain't that something? I remember a reunion of sorts---on the old Hee Haw TV show. And Milburn Stone (Doc) was part of the quartet with Festus and maybe Roy Rogers. Milburn Stone might've been in that group too at one time. I think Bob Nolan was still alive then, but he wasn't on that program. Bob Nolan was my favorite voice of all those guys. He did a solo album with Marty Robbins singing harmony on a few tracks before he died. It was pretty good. Art |
