You will always have liberals and conservatives each saying that the reporting of the news is biased.

Read it, listen to it, make up your own mind.

If what you get isn't balanced, making up your own mind is a little tough for those folks who never learned to think for themselves, but only to generate knee-jerk reactions. The trash on Fox isn't "news," it's hype. Ignore the tv news, listen to national public radio, read newspapers from other nations in addition to those available around the country here. TV news, for the most part, stinks of the popularity contest ratings that it is trying to lure in (so it can charge more money for advertisement time).

SRS, are you one of those folks who never learned to think for themselves?

Am I supposed to worry about those folks?

BTW, if you think NPR isn't biased, you are just as guilty as as those just watching Fox.

Listen to NPR, watch Fox, and then make up your mind.

Carol:
True, indeed. The only difference is that, 50 or so years ago, the Chicago Tribune didn't even try to hide the fact that it was a Democratic outlet. Nor, for that matter, did the Chicago Sun-Times worry whether or not people knew its Republican bent. As in other cities around the country, it was commonly known that some papers leaned one way and the rest went the other way. Bias wasn't considered an evil, if you understood which paper was which. Only recently did "fair and balanced" coverage become a virtue.

I guess "virtue" is one term that could be used. "Marketing ploy" might be another.

As one who has over 125 years of family history in Chicago, you have it backwards. The Tribune was always and still is a Republican based editorial bias. The Sun-Times has always leaned Democratic.

I think there is still a certain amount of integrity in journalism. I think people also hear what they want to hear today more than ever.

Pardon me all to Hades, Martin.

I had the good sense to leave Illinois when I was but a lad and I hope I can be forgiven for confusing the respective political leanings of the two local rags.

My little brother is a journalist (managing editor of a group of small-town weeklies in southern Wisconsin) and his take on it is that editorial independence is threatened in most commerical outlets, even the tiny ones. Granted, his news subjects don't take on the importance of war or national economics, but the impact of deviating from the editorial leaning of the publisher is felt, nonetheless. Corporate influence appears often to overcome any inherent journalistic integrity that may still be lingering from school or wherever else the reporter learned her or his craft. The reporter who "tells it like it is" can very easily be risking a career.

Hey, if you left Illinois when you "were a lad" you didn't have any say or sense about it anyway.

Chicago is a world class city with two world class newspapers.

There's a vast difference between editorial policy and news coverage. I don't have a problem with that. But when that spills over into reporting-- twisting or omitting facts-- that's what alarms me.

It is, indeed, "world class," as far as cities go, . . . I just don't care for cities. I care even less for "flatlands." If it weren't for the low rolling hills of southern Wisconsin, I could see Chicago from 150 miles away. Illinois is the most dangerous place in the midwest to drive through, not because of the drivers (they're actually reasonably safe and predictable), but because the vistas will put you to sleep faster than an overzealous anaesthesiologist.

And, as for the papers, I'll take the advice offered above, and read and listen to whatever I can get my hands on and then believe only a fraction of any one source.

"Twisting and omitting" are, i fear, more frequent that we may realize. I believe that this is not so much the result of individual editors' meddling as it is the fault of higher ups. When newspapering (and other media) becomes a corporate business rather than a calling, we all suffer.

Even with independent reporting, there is bound to be a bias to one degree or another. I don't mind this, if I know who is leaning which way and if the reporter doesn't deny her or his perspective.

Chicago used to have THREE papers, and I still miss the Daily News. Cleveland used to have two papers. DC used to have two papers, and the Post will NEVER replace teh Star (the Times isn't a newspaper, just an outlet for Sun Myung Moon). Even Pocatello used to have two papers.

Fer crissakes! You need to read not just BOTH sides of an issue, but ALL sides of an issue! Get thee down to your local library and read some (gasp!) books on the subject you're interested in! Do some research! Danged little comes as a surprise -- there's always something leading up to it, and somebody has probably written something about it. THEN check out the Internet -- AFTER, not before, you research something in print because (yeah, it's heresy -- make the most of it) the Internet, well, it's filled with untruths, partial truths, and outright lies!

THEN make up your mind.

But you might want to do this before libraries vanish away in the siren song of "we don't need them, we have the Internet".

Of course, this IS work and it takes longer than 15 seconds.

If any of the Big Three (not including Fox's enetertainment fauve-news station) they all lean heavilly toward the Bush and his ahministration..

Why? Easy. Money, They all will make more money if the FCC kills off the last remaining ownership regs and Bush and Michael Powell (Colin's son) they have their guys.

Proff:

Well sure. Look at the 2000 election. Here are Big Three who in the previous 8 years collectively wrote and printed 784,094,883 negative words about Bill Clinton. That's a lot of words. Then along comes frat boy with a history of womanizing, partying, sniffin coke and with a serious alcoholism problem and not a peep??? I mean, go figure???

Not enough proof. Then after party boy is selected by Jeb Bush and Katerine Harris to be president and before party boys daddy's Supreme Court votes him in, Greg Palist presents the Big Three with evidence beyond any shadow of a doubt that party's boy's brother, Jeb, and Ms. Harris has illegally purged some 57,000 black voters from the being able to exercise their votes. What did the Big Three do? Nothing. The Post ran an article on it on page A-17 or so with a couple of columns inches two months after Bush was sworn in??? Go figure, Part 2...

Oh, not enough yet? Rewind to the Bush's run up to the invasion of Irag. Yeak, go back to October before the invasion and read what the Big Three wrote about the massive demostartions all over the world. And agine a month later. And then again in January... Massive demonstaration with millions of people in the streets all over the world saying "NO!". I was at 2 of the 3 in Wsahington, D.C... The first one was barly reported though there were around 250,000 and what was reported was on the back pages. The 15 or so Bushites got almost as much press space as the 250,000 of us. The Novemeber demonstartion barely got covered even though C-SPAN covered an hours of it late that night after almosr eveyone had gone to bed. The January demostration got front page but the 500,000 or more folks who participated were reported as "tens of thousands" which certainly gives a wrong perspective of it's size. And of course the usual cast of brownshirt (about 20 Bushites) got lots of press... LIke go figure, part 3...

I could go on and on... The right wing knows it has the press by the throat but they will keep feeding that "liberal press" pablum to the up and coming brownshirters 'casue it plays well into their steady druming of anyone who writes and read must be an intellectual and all intellectuals are commies crap...

There is only one barely major pregressive media outlet in America and it's Pacifica... That's it as far as "liberal media" goes. The rest are nuthin but shills for the Bush regime...

Bobert,
you must not sleep well at night buddy,..you were at 2 of the 3 demonstrations in D.C. does that mean that the press should have covered it because YOU were there? or that you thought what you were demonstrating had more merit than what the folks down the street were demonstrating?? I've got news for ya pal, there are demonstrations every day in Washington D.C. most of them don't make the news. That does not make a conspiracy. That's life!, there are sometimes more important things going on in the world than what Bobert is involved with. The world keeps turning with or without you man.

This ain't about Bobert, Biskit. Apparently you have never been part of demonstration of a half a million folks. If you had you wouldn't have made your ""it ain't all about you, Bobert" comment...

I've spent my entire life living within 120 miles of Washington, D.C. I'm accutely aware of waht goes on there. I play music there every Saturday... I don't need no lectures from someone who doesn't have a clue about DC or the history of demonstartions (or their size) from someone who doesn't know anything about the subject, thank you...

My mother was arrested several times in "civil rights" demonstrations well before my first demonstartion so don't get into my stuff unless you have a deep history in what it takes to go to jail for what you believe in...

And for the last time, it ain't about me. It's about justice. It's about what's moral and what is right...

I couldn't care less about my contributions to the cause.

Conrad Black named business newsmaker of 2004
Last Updated Thu, 30 Dec 2004 18:42:28 EST

TORONTO - Conrad Black has been named Canada's business newsmaker of the year for the second year in a row by the Canadian Press and Broadcast News.

The once-unassailable press baron, who spent the year embroiled in legal and boardroom battles, received 76 of the 143 votes cast in this year's poll of news editors and broadcasters.

or this from CBC, as well:

Black became known for taking over newspapers and chopping away the fat (and much of the meat as well), resulting in job losses. Criticism aside, these newspapers often turned a profit within a year. So large was his appetite for newspapers that at one point, he was the third-largest newspaper publisher in the world. At its peak in 1999, Hollinger had revenues over $2 billion.

More from CBC:

While Lord Black has been no stranger to controversy, going back to his early days in business when he won control of the Argus corporate empire, the Montreal-born Lord Black became a truly spectacular story in November, 2003. That's when he and several of his close associates were accused of diverting $32.2-million (U.S.) away from Hollinger International Inc., a company he controlled.

The number and magnitude of the allegations then ballooned after independent directors of Chicago-based Hollinger International spent more than a year and more than $56-million of the company's money on an investigation of years of transactions by the company while Lord Black was its chairman and CEO.

He has since lost those positions, under duress, and voluntarily given up parallel posts at Hollinger Inc., a Toronto-based company that's part of an elaborate web of interrelated businesses controlled directly or indirectly by Lord Black.

Lord Black still remains controlling shareholder of the Hollinger group, once the world's third-largest newspaper company in terms of circulation. But most of its key assets have been sold, including The Daily Telegraph, the London-based newspaper that enabled him to become a member of Britain's House of Lords.

While Lord Black's problems at Hollinger International can be traced back to shareholder complaints lodged in 2002, they gained real prominence in November, 2003, when the company announced that he, Hollinger Inc. and several other senior executives in his inner circle had received unauthorized fees.

Hollinger International also said Lord Black was resigning as CEO but would remain chairman and be involved in a "strategic process" that could involve the sale of all or some of the company's assets. CP

Martin Gibson, how predictable you are. In this discussion you try to win a debate by bashing everyone else's reasoned contributions instead of offering well-documented useful commentary of your own. Do you think you're somehow coming out on top with this kind of strategy? You camp out on a thread and trash and insult anyone you don't agree with, and the thread participation ends due to the frustation of those who give up trying to talk while you're around. Insults about learning to think for one's self don't make me look less capable in the conversation, they make you look mentally puny and defensive.

Compare an hour of news on one of the big three and on NPR and you will find the substance on NPR every time. This morning I had the ABC's Good Morning America on for a little while, but quit trying to take it seriously as a source of news because the pro-American and European slant in the telling of the story of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean was enough to gag me. It's like the folks at ABC assume all of the natives look alike so no one here will be able to follow the story. So we learn about one white family from Salt Lake City that lost a daughter. We followed them for several minutes and they searched and came to the grim realization she had indeed died. This is too bad, but it is a tiny part of the story, and all things considered, they were luckier than most. Then the network was going to go to the story of how a Sports Illustrated super model survived the flood. Give me a break--are we going to peer at her closely to see if her $20,000 a day face was marred in the water? One hundred forty-four thousand people so far have died in that disaster, a fraction of one percent of them were white. Yet the coverage on the news, with any "human interest" angle, is of white American or Euro families. NPR gives the story of a wider ranging group of people, and doesn't fawn on a few English-speaking folks (makes the story go much easier on tv if there is no translator or captioning needed).

It's the same with many other topics. Last summer: why should I have bothered to watch the Olympics on American TV? They only followed American athletes, but I wanted to see or hear what others from around the world were doing. You get some good reports on Public Radio, and you get good reports from the world press.

Bobert is right. It's the money that talks on American news channels. So it's not news at all, it's hype and pablum dumbed down for an increasingly dumbed down American public.

Donnie,

I was at a few too--demonstrations that is. The press tended to cover what it thought people should see. Nothing more.

Today, many of us perceive the press to be comprised of folks who don't so much report the news; rather (just a conjunction--not a reference to Dan), we see them as organizations that make the news to shape public opinion. Arguing that with anyone who doesn't see it is--well, let me put it this way: As Dorothy Kilgallen once said, "If you smoke marijuana you don't know anyone who doesn't. If you don't smoke marijuana, you don't know anyone who does." Matter of perception, that's all.

Liberals claiming that the press is biased to the right is covered and nuked in the first chapter of Bernard Goldbergs second book "Arrogance".   You won't have to read far to see what a rediculous argument that is.   Goldberg was a liberal emmey award winning journalist from CBS news for 28 years.

OK- so lets take a quiz.

fox news- Alan Colmes, Greta van Susnow, and Geraldo Rivera.

Those are three liberals on prime time for Fox News.

Name three conservatives on prime time for

CBS
ABC
NBC
CNN
NPR
(Juan Williams is not a conservative so don't even think about listing him)

Greta and Geraldo have their own shows.   Are there any conservatives who have their own shows on any of the above networks?

If you can't name 3 conservatives on each of the networks, than you need to relabel the networks

ABS
NBS
CBS
MSNBS

Have you ever noticed that every news broadcast covers the same story on each of the 6 networks - ALL at the same time? Quickly surf to another channel and you pick up the same story with only slight variations.

The lock step nature of "news" broadcasts in the USA is merely a ongoing figment of our imagination and permanent coincidence.

"Fair and Balanced" is a hollow gimmick from Fox News. Other copy cat news formats are attempting to cash in on the sycophantic Bush supporters that masquerade as valid journalists.

If you want decent news today, you will not find it on NBC (owned by GE),
ABC (owned by Disney), CBS (owned by Viacom) and Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes Fox news (owned by Bush).

To find legitimate news coverage, you have to look elsewhere.

Frank

Yeah, do you think men are mind readers?

Or is it safe to assume that just about everyone here is a cancer survivor, in a wheel chair, have some kind of disease, etc.?

Sorry, Martin, but Will Rogers' line was "I only KNOW what I read in the papers"- and he said it with a wink.

He never claimed to believe it.
