I heard on the radio today that the Canadian government is trying to pass a new law that will severely restrict the flow of prescription drugs to the USA. The law will prohibit Canadian doctors from writing prescriptions for patients without having personally given them a physical examination. Have any of you Mudcatters north of the border heard anything to this effect ?

There was a lobby group pressuring Ottawa for this sort of law this past year. According to a spokesperson from the group... there is a limited supply of medication alloted to Canada by various pharmaceutical companies (Canada being a much smaller market for them than the US) and when our cheaper subsidized drugs are used up for the year, that's all there is.

Do you think that this law has a good chance of passing ? I have to take Prevacid every day. I get it from Canada at one third of the price that it costs me here in the USA.

I too take this drug, but as a Canadian, I have to support protecting our national supply of drugs.

Many people in our Jewish community are now starting to import drugs from Israel. They are even less costly than from Canada. We also have doctors who are licensed to practice over there as well as here. I may have to go that route if Canada cuts off the supplies. Bush does'nt really care. His nest is being feathered by the big drug manufacturers.

I think the real problem isn't limitations on drug imports from Canada or elsewhere. The problem is that the Canadian government negotiates drug prices with the drug companies, keeping the prices comparatively low, while the US government does not. Unfortunately, this is not likely to change. Sol, thanks for telling us about less costly drugs from Israel. Mudcatters may give the Israelis some more business soon.

Only for drugs covered under Medicare and there ain't that many relatively speaking. Now, the real problem for the Yanks is that we now have developed weather tough strains of weed, precluding import of same for a reasonable price. However, the government seems to be about to move on this one, and make homegrown, in moderate quantities, legal. Of course, this may be just a pipe dream, as it was when the LeDain (spelling ?) Commission was blowing smoke up our ass's.

Australia leads the way in that - and The Free Trade Agreement or as it is called here the F*** The Aussies leglislation - was an attempt at that - but due to a strong opposition - didn't quite get thru without amendment - but Johnny will have a free hand as from July - so look out!

In most civilized countries, drug prices are negotiated between drug companies and the government. If you want to sell your drug in, say, Canada, you must negotiate the retail price with the government.

In the U.S. you are free to set the price as high as you want to. Since you have a patent on the drug for 15 years or so, there won't be much competition. Then you give discounts to the Veteran's Administration, HMOs and others but not to individuals because you want to screw them as much as possible. Also, you do not give discounts to Medicare because that was made illegal by the Bush administration in a questionable vote in congress last year.

There are new attempted intrusions of the drug corporations deep into the heart of NIH. First introduced by Dan Quayle a law that would make any NIH or FDA scientist who questions the safety or effectiveness of a new drug; he must first face a tribunal of a politically selected ombudsmen to clear up any disagreements - or else.

Hmmm. Why ever could prescription drugs be so costly in the USA? Can you spell greed?
    I wonder how many drug company lobbyists there are per congresspersons in D.C.? Perhaps a ration of 50 or 60 per elected official? Does anyone know? Perhaps that has something to do with it. That & all the free "pens" the lobbyists give away?

1. I've seen mutually contradictory posts on this thread on the issue of whether drug prices are low in Canada because the Canadian government negotiates prices with the drug companies. Any clarification?

2. Donuel, I believe that the intent of the proposed law is different. It would enable any FDA scientist who is overruled on the issue of drug safety to tell his or her point of view to a panel of politicians from both parties.

Cleaning up the FDA would be a tough job. I know; I worked there for 23 years. Scientists are so often overruled on safety issues by management or policy makers. There is pressure to compromise one's scientific integrity all too often. This is particularly true in the current political climate, which is strongly anti regulation and pro big business. Morale among scientists at FDA and other regulatory agencies is very low.

I will try to find out the names of some Israeli suppliers and post them for those who are interested. There were 2 that had advertised in the Jewish Press about 2 months ago. I did not save the ads because I did not feel that I had a need for them. Now that Canada is changing the laws Iwill make it my business to once again re-discover them.
