Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: Cluin Date: 17 Jan 05 - 12:53 AM The other half of our duo plays a lot of them so I end up backing him up on them. I'm not a huge Buffett fan, but one I quite like is "Coast of Marseilles". We often finish out our last set with it if things are quiet. I do lots of guitar fills and leads on it. Or sometimes pick up the mandolin for it. |
Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 17 Jan 05 - 01:01 AM The only Buffett song I do is "Pencil Thin Moustache". I don't do any of his beach bum songs because I've spent enough time around genuine beach bums that I don't find anything remotely romantic about that lifestyle anymore. |
Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: GUEST Date: 17 Jan 05 - 05:05 AM Yes - every year we trawl out " How 'd Ya Like to Spend Christmas On Christmas Island" which is a neat song with nice changes. |

Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: GUEST,GUEST, Summitauc Date: 17 Jan 05 - 08:39 AM Back in the mid-'70s I used to play in a duo, afternoons behind a motel in Madeira Beach, Florida, facing the thatch-roofed bar and the sea. Seems like every other day a rain storm would roll in off the Gulf, usually around 4 p.m. We had it timed so that when we spotted the storm, we knew we could play one more song and pack it up before getting drenched. We always played "Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season." The first line - "There's a storm out on the Gulfstream..." alerted the bartenders an other help that they had 10 minutes or so before the deluge. |

Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: Wesley S Date: 17 Jan 05 - 04:44 PM Summitauc - If you were playing Maderia Beach in the mid 70's then I was bound to have heard you at one point or other. I'm not saying I can remember it - but I'm sure I heard you. I grew up in Largo - on the mainland. What was the name of the group ? As far as myself I 've been known to play the song "Biloxi" - which is actually a Jesse Winchster song. |
Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs? From: number 6 Date: 17 Jan 05 - 05:15 PM 'Biloxi' ..... that's a beautiful song, not familiar with the Buffet version though. I also love Jesse Winchester's Yankee Lady. Thanks for mentioning Jesse. sIx |

Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs/any Buffet Fans? From: Genie Date: 12 Nov 11 - 02:38 PM "How 'd Ya Like to Spend Christmas On Christmas Island" isn't an original Buffett song, although it fits right in with his own songs. It's from the 1940s. I sing a few Buffett songs fairly often, either solo or in song circle/sing-alongs: The Captain And The Kid Pencil-Thin Mustache Come Monday and, of course, Margaritaville I used to do "Growing Older But Not Up," but it's been so long since I've sung it that I've forgotten most of it. |

Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs/any Buffet Fans? From: GUEST,highlandman at home Date: 12 Nov 11 - 11:00 PM I enjoy listening, but I have an unerring knack for making his songs sound like shyte, so no, I don't sing them. -G |
Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs/any Buffet Fans? From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Nov 11 - 12:33 AM Several decades ago I liked "A Pirate Looks at Forty"...............I think Jimmy and I both need an update....... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Anyone play Jimmy Buffett songs/any Buffet Fans? From: Genie Date: 13 Nov 11 - 11:26 PM I can't really get into singing songs about doing drugs,* so I don't do things like "A Pirate Looks At Forty," or anything about cocaine, but there are a lot of Buffett songs I'd gladly do if the occasion arose, such as "Volcano," "Mental Floss," or Buffett's version of the 'Dead's" "Uncle John's Band," which I prefer to the original. Thank goodness Jimmy et al. have left us such a smorgasbord of songs to choose from. |
