I am intending to get down to NZ from about 2nd Feb though to about 20th Feb. Mainly to see my son Ross, but are there any festivals or events on during that period? Have drum, willing to travel.

there is an excellent site whos URL escapes me - but search for NZ folk music festivals and I think it will be in the results. I am way out of date on the scene now.

We toured New Zealand in November and December and found a great club at Devonport (just take the ten minute ferry ride from Auckland) The club is called The Bunker Club and is run by a chap called Roger Giles , great character who was wearing Fred Jordan's (of English Folk tradition fame)old hob nailed boots. A really friendly club which is housed in a bunker on top of a hill. We were royally welcomed and had a fantastic night. Don't miss it. Found this on the web Have a good time.

Unfortunately, you'll just miss the Aucklanf Folk Festival - it's this coming weekend!
But see Roger anyway, he'll help you.
We have a public holiday on 6th February, called Waitangi day, when we celebrate the treaty between the British and the Maori people, so you might find something special on then.
Cheers,
Robyn

Thanks I will look out for the events on Waiangi Day. Last year when I was in NZ I took part in the Hikoi protest in Wellington.

Did you have a great time in NZ, Shanghaiceltic?
Where did you go and what sessions & clubs did you find?
I will be there myself next Jan/Feb!

I had a bloody great time.

I met up with Little Robyn in Hastings at the Cat and Fiddle which was great. Nice bunch of folks, good pub, good music.

In Wellington there are a couple of sessions. Monday nights at Molley Malones in Courtney Place, 8.00 onwards. The guy who runs it is Dave Barnes and he makes any visitors most welcome. I counted 30 odd people playing at the same time at one point!

There is another session on the same night Kitty O Shea's in Courtney Place too. Not been to that one.

Also took the ferry across to Picton and hired a car (book ahead) to get to Nelson. Good session there too. The Kiwi Folk website www.kiwifolk.org said it was at one pub but in fact it had moved across the road to a pub called the Mean Donkey.

If you are in Auckland a good folk club is across the water in Devenport (ferries are very frequent) in the Bunker at the top of the main drag in Deveonport. The Bunker is an old WWII command post half buired in the hillside. Interesting place and they have regular sessions.

Go to Kiwifolk and they have lisitngs. I had a great time amongst some very friendly people.
