I have a new music buddy who plays cello but is used to reading music--want to get her started with the tunes I play -- have found one site that has free sheet music but I'm looking for more, since it only has a few tunes I do -- any ideas?
Thanks,
Bekki

Use of the cello as an accompaniment instrument - here's an interesting article: Cello Accompaniment Concepts in Traditional Music. The range of a cello is C to E, similar to the viola, but an octive lower. It doesn't lend itself very well to melody in traditional music, which is in the range of the fiddle - G to B. But it is great for chordal bass lines.

Hey Stewart, thanks for the interesting link, but where'd you get that erroneous information on the cello's range???? I'm a cellist. The cello's range--if you look at the tuning of its open strings--is low C (two octaves below middle C), the G one-fifth above that, D one-fifth above that, and A below middle C. But you can play an additional two octaves (carefully, and if you're good) just on that A string. And if you have ANY doubts about the ability of a cello to be a melody instrument in traditional music, just listen to Alasdair Frasier and Natalie Haas' hot new CD "Fire and Grace"(traditional recording of the year in the U.K.). Listen to that and you'll realize that a trad cellist's range is limited only by her/his imagination and ability. Natalie Haas is incredible.
Cheers,
Kathy

Try her contact info on her site, www.nataliehaas.com. She is a super nice person, and I'm sure would be glad to give you advice.

Kathy, you're right! I guess I was just thinking about the viola. And I have heard Alasdair Frasier and Natalie Haas, and Natalie's great.

Cheers, S.

Thanks for the leads. i will check them out.

The biggest stumbling block for my friend is she was trained classically and like a lot of folks with that training is somewhat dependent on the written music-- interesting for me because I'm a mostly-by-ear person, and just use the sheet music to make sure I'm not missing something :)

Actually I'm really a singer, so I learn tunes by filtering them through my ear-voice connection-- the learn-by-humming technique.

I love Mudcat! Thanks again,

Bekki

The big question is: can she play from treble clef, or does she need notation transposed to bass clef? The latter is in very short supply for traditional music. I've transposed to bass clef for cellists who were bored with playing simple bass parts and couldn't play by ear, but it can still be a bit awkward for the average player who has trouble jumping octaves.

Hi Malcolm,
She's definitely looking for bass clef. not used to transposing.

Right. Basically, that means you first have to find the notation, which will probably be in treble clef, then transpose it yourself.

J C's Tunefinder is probably the best online resource to use, at any rate for instrumental music. It will return results as abc, midi or staff.

There are programs available that will transpose midi (some will also import abc) and produce printable staff. Some are easier, or quicker, or cheaper, or produce nicer results, than others. You'll need to look at some of the many discussions here on that very subject (there's one going at the moment) and decide what looks best for you.

Recommend downloading Noteworthy (free). I did and it works brilliantly.

As MD suggests look at other current thread.

My wife wants to learn to play trad tunes on her cello and is made up with the transposition function.

So if I understand you, there is a program (Noteworthy) that will transpose a tune from treble to bass clef?

I use JC's tune finder regularly -- and he is very helpful with questions etc.

I am a novice-- how hard is this program to use? and where will I find it?

Thanks (again!).

My son is learning the cello and I play the tunes into BAnd in a Box which then will print out in any clef or key. As for not being traditional, it depends on how far back you want to go. If you read any of Thomas Hardy's novels of life in Dorset in the time of Napoleon, the local band that played at church and for village dances featured a cello.

Cello was used quite commonly in England and Scotland in "vernacular" as well as "art" music, particularly for dancing. In England, at amy rate, well within living memory. Niel Gow's collections include cello parts, for instance (his brother was a cellist), though they aren't very interesting to play. Today's cellists probably want something a bit more challenging, like the melody part!

Thanks for info on the use of the cello in traditional music. Looks like I have found a mutual friend who will help us work out the technical end of this.

What is Band in a Box?!

Just type in Noteworthy into Google and follow insructions to download. The free download lasts for 9 saved tunes then it ceases to work. If you never save a tune it might go on forever.:0)

It is fairly intuitive to use but it can do so many things the screen looks awesome. Transposing needs acouple of button presses only!!

If you do find it difficult you have only spent a little time rather than money.

I bought the unrestricted programme after only two days "playing" with it.
