Mudcat 2004 Alternative British Folk Awards - Nominations!

2005 sees the third year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. Last year, a completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below. Your nominations are sought for this year's folk spectacular.

Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories

PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
PUB/CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" GROUP / DUO
BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD
HORIZONTAL AWARD (Best drinker)
BEST FOLK CLUB
BEST PUB SESSION (Regular)
BEST PUB SESSION (Festival)
BEST FOLK FESTIVAL
BEST FOLK DRAMA (the "We do it in the road award")
BEST REGULAR DANCE EVENT
BEST LOCAL FOLK MAGAZINE

A number of SPECIAL AWARDS are also traditionally included in the ceremony (see below for examples). Your suggestions and nominations for any special categories will be considered by the committee.

The "Two In A Bar Award" for the best nonexistent Session/Singaround
The Larry Otway "Flat Earth" Award for Special International Effort
The Lifetime Achievement Award for whatever

please PM me with nominations etc. by 1st March 2005 so that voting can commence in good time for the awards to be published on the now-traditional date of 1st April.

Go to it, folks!

:-)

Please define "non-commercial". Do you mean in folk terms? Is Kate Rusby commercial because she sells like hot cakes compared with some floor singer's home produced effort?
And is a group non-commercial only when they aren't getting gigs?

I second -Bob Fox, and John K. But most of all the Bricklayers Arms at Whittlesey. The Straw Bear Festival. Great. Actually two sessions going on in two bars. It's where I heard The Boars Head - Kebab parody! Come on Keep Up! (and watch out for a 10 year old fiddle player, as was heard at the New Crown, same weekend).

Come to think of it. At the Straw Bear, Nick Barber was doing a good job for the best drinker award. Played a lot with his eyes closed.

Hey Les - have you seen our gig list for this year? Our website
here lists 24 song gigs up to the end of August - of which 5 are festivals ( including Whitby for the week). This does not include all the band gigs for Fendragon ( our Ceilidh band, or English rebellion, the other ceilidh band we're in)
If that isn't getting gigs, I don't know what is.
So I think we have been disqualified by Guest's post above.
Of course, if you don't agree, then we'll be honoured to be nominated.

The Boars Head Parody is famously sung by Chris Pitt, who in all probablity wrote it (and he was at Whittelesey, so it must have been him). He deserves some sort of award for that and his other misdemeanours in song!

I didn't see the 10 yr old fiddle player, but he could very well have been the same one I saw in the Elsinore at Whitby, fantastic. I didn't mean to be disparageing Mary but there was only one catagory for duos.
Cheers

Might be worth explaining that what I meant, when replying to GUEST's post above, was mainly a shorthand for "Whatever you like". In general, though, I've always looked on this massive and splendid ceremonial occasion as an essentially non-pro event (i.e. don't give up the day job).

In fact, my personal idea of "folk" would pretty much rule out the idea of a full-time "professional folk singer" anyway. It seems a contradiction in terms. I'm happy about professional entertainers who specialise in singing "folk" songs (whatever those are), and I'm happy to go to see them (and to pay). Just they've already got a massive awards thingy courtesy of the BBC, and I wanted to celebrate the other thing.

By the way, Anahata and I saw the 10 year-old fiddler in the New Crown at the Straw Bear. Yes, he is the same one you saw at Whitby. Better than ever and playing in F and Bb.... that's a great way to shut up melodeons!

As IanC is setting the parameters for these 'ere awards, won't a good number of LesB's nominations be disqualified?

I thought Bob F, John K and Damien B would all qualify as full-time professionals?

I have no quibble with any of them, by the way - they're all very good and well worth seeing.

best 'twice a week' club award

may I ever so humbly nominate the St Albans 'Windward' and 'Spotlight' clubs they meet on Fridays and Sundays respectively at the Royal British legion with a full guest list

Best resident performers in the 'over 50s but under 55 ' age group

again may I humbly nominate

George Papavgeris and Chris Flegg who appear at the twin clubs in St Albans, at the Royal British Legion on Verulam Road

best new vocal duo award for 2005 in the over 50s age group
'Moses and the Ref'

For 'The club in the Smallest room ' award may I nominate
the 'Windward' and 'Spotlight' clubs, though the Crystal club in Stourbridge comes a close runner up.

For 'giving new talent a gig' award
once again it gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to make this unique award to the 'twin' clubs of St Albans.

Best Folk Club web site fiddler George Papavgeris, bloody clever fellow be he.

www.folk4all.net

btw this week the twin clubs present Julie Ellison Fri 4th Feb and Sun 6th Feb

Get well soon Vin you're booked in May

F & Bflat are quite OK for an English ( or Duet) concertina player, but a bit of a pig for an Anglo. Anahata is one of the few people I know who can play in such keys.
The 10-year-old fiddler - I wish we knew his name - said he had learnt the tunes from recordings. If he's at Whitby again this year,he'll probably be running a workshop.....

For Life Time Achievement Awards I cannot split the nomination so I'll nominate two of the most dedicated folkies I know and both for the same reason. They have both given their lives to helping others find and enjoy folk music. Andy Jackson, who runs Miskin Festival and Alan White who runs Wareham Wail (and Sidmouth campsite). If anyone has ever been to either of these events you'll understand why and if you haven't... well isn't it about time you did? It's people like this who keep the tradition alive and well and make sure it is passed on to the next generation. Andy and Alan...

You forgot a nomination for the worst presenter of folk music on the radio EVER. Obviously only one nomination, Mike Hardly, oops Harding.

dear eric - i cant support these remarks about mike - in fact i think you are must be having a fool's interlude to say that. Dont you think Mike knows the ropes and the score. He knows and loves what happens at grass roots level. He mans the widest media opportunity to entice people into the genre with laudible discernment given commercial criteria that allow it to be there at all. People move from his programme to exploring folk clubs and their own desire to hear and contribute to live self-entertainment. Get real dude!

Votes should be PM'd to me as a single line of text (I don't much care what else you include, but it won't count) in the form 1A2B3C... etc. It's also easier if you include all numbers and simply put a" -" for categories you don't wish to vote for. Notes, comments, blatant self-promotions etc. here please, so everybody can see them and join in. You may vote for items which you have previously missed out at a later date.

GET VOTING!!!

Some details on my nominees:-

Jeff Hankin - Art Teacher and talented songwriter from Cwmbran. Will be at Miskin and Upton festivals. His CD/tape ws recorded at Llantrisant Folk Club and is avai.able from him (sorry no contact details) or possibly from Miskin Man/Andy Jackson.

Pat Smith - or Pat Spoons to you. For 25 years half of Calennig. Excellent concertina and spoons player. Not bad on the fiddle either, but she's a bit shy about that. Runs (with help) Llantrisant Club. Does concerts and clubs with Ned Clamp who I've known all his/my life so I'm not at liberty to expound on his many talents (when they're visible - or is that risible?). If anyone heard the radio programme - A Poke In the Ear - on CBC in the late 70's, I'd like to hear from you. Surveys showed I had 2000 listeners a week in the Cardiff area, with a margin of error of 4000!

Blake's 3 - an occasional trio of 25 years standing, led by Martin Blake from Hereford, playing an incredibly varied repertoire of folk, blues, jazz, swing, klezmer etc. Tight as a ***'s **** on guitar, fiddle and sax/clarinet.

Splott Man

My vote for Best Folk Drama is at The Bull in Barton's 12 hour special, when they forgot to pay their electric bill and all the power went off across all of Barton for many hours. It was good timeing because there was a choir singing at the time and they were reading their words. Well done Ross Srivener, a history making night. My best sessions are many, ie Fox at Pirton run by Julie Dawson and the Sutton one, at John O' Gaunt run by Phil Lane. My over all winner really is The Blue Anchor in St Albans, Fishpool St. Run by "Run of the Mill's" Alan Halse.

Mudcat 2003 Alternative British Folk Awards - Results!

April 2005 sees another year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. A completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below.

Votes have been pouring in from Mudcatters far and wide, under each of the following Main Award categories and here are the final results of your voting.

PUB / CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
George Papavgeris is back on top this year, a runaway winner, knocking Mary Humphries off last year's No 1 spot.

PUB / CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
John Breeze knocks John Kirkpatrick off the No. 1 spot. Special mention to runner up Pat Smith.

BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" GROUP / DUO
Mary Humphries and Anahata were runaway winners this year.

BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD
This year, Les Sullivan's "Echoes of Mingulay" takes the prize by a mile, knocking last year's winner "Guide Cats for The Blind" into 2nd place.

HORIZONTAL AWARD (Best drinker)
This year's more rigorous selection procedure sees Crispin Bartlett knock Hilary Ward from her accustomed position and take the cup. Joint 2nd for Cllr and Snuffy.

BEST FOLK CLUB
This year goes to Windward, St Albans with special mentions to Llantrisant, Seaford and The Carrington, Nottingham.

BEST PUB SESSION (Regular)
Once again to The Bull, Barton le Clay - special mention (runners up) The Crown & Treaty, Uxbridge and The Guest House, Southport.

BEST PUB SESSION (Festival)
This year to The Bar Room, Miskin - special mention (runner up) The Endeavour, Whitby.

BEST FOLK FESTIVAL
Miskin is getting all the plaudits this year, special mentions to Bridgenorth and Whitby.

BEST FOLK DRAMA (non Mummers)
"Unsung Heroes" ... The Cornwall Songwriters get it for the 2nd year, this year uncontested (but heavily supported).

BEST FOLK DRAMA (Mummers)
Goes to The Mummers Play at The Tap & Spile, Whitby.

BEST REGULAR DANCE EVENT
Haddenham Ceilidhs wins the prestigious award this year.

BEST LOCAL FOLK MAGAZINE

BTW

Though we haven't got Ant & Dec to present the awards this year, we have the next best thing ... a commercial break.

Here it is.

Ashwell Mummers will be performing their (now) traditional Pasche Egging Play tonight (Friday 1st April) in all the Ashwell pubs.

Bushel & Strke, Mill Street 7:30 pm
Three Tuns, High Street 9:30 pm
Rose & Crown, High Street 10:00 pm

You may wonder where we'll be between the 7:30 and 9:30 performances ... well, that's for us to know and you to wonder about.

;-)
Ian

What a fabulous week it has been. Many, many thanks to everyone who voted. If any details are required for the "press release" please email to Les@howlingtoad.wanadoo.co.uk. or if you want to check out the CD the words are on my website howlingtoad.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk (can be found on Google too).
Of course the CD would not sound as it does without Kitty, Johnny and George, I am inordinately proud to have worked with all of them.
Look forward to meeting mudcatters at festivals this summer.

Thanks folks.

Ian, just as a matter of interest, how many people voted in total? Are we talking 5-6, 10-20, or the full membership of Mudcat and their families?

Congrats to El Greko - the award couldn't have gone to a nicer man!
Anahata and I are delighted to be regarded as the best 'Non-commercial Duo' in spite of Mike Harding's decision to play a track from our new CD on Radio 2. We are sticking with the day-jobs!
How about for next year, an award to 'Great Snorer of All-Time'. Judging from comments at Miskin there is a huge competition to be had there....
Guru - glad to see that your fame has diminished somewhat, in the nicest possible way. Perhaps Best Raffle-ticket Seller might be one to go for next year.
Mary

I've just got back from Conference and seen the results. Thanks to everyone who voted for Unsung Heroes from all of Cornwall Songwriters - that's Jon Heslop, Mike O'Connor, Tony Truscott, Lucy Burrow (Hawker), Kathy Wallis (Cats), Roger Bryant and Ron Openshaw. We are perfoming it all over the place in the coming months so make sure you get along to see it. It you haven't booked it for your festival yet, contact us soon as we are not doing it after next summer, 2006.
Also brilliant news about Miskin and the Lifetime Achievement Awards for Andy and Alan.
Congrats to all the other winners too.

You cannot imagine how proud I was to see the kind references to Miskin and indeed myself, throughout the nomination process. All a bit of fun I thought...then I pondered, hang on these are the very life blood of our festival scene here, and they seem to like Miskin - Warm Glow, Miskin Tingle Moment time. And then to hear such an amazing verdict. I am very proud and happy to have found a formula that works.
When the results were announced I was away in Suffolk with Jillie researching and meeting surviving family members. My cousin Geoff Ling was well pleased that I was so involved in our traditions and was still flying/singing the family flag. You helped make an old gentleman of our traditions very happy.

Andy
