Today marks the anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle, Challenger in 1986. It is also the anniversary of the death of my good friend, Marshall Dodge, the creator of "Bert & I". He was hit and killed by a drunk driver in Hawaii on this date in 1982.
It is also the birthday of my youngest daughter, Rebecca, one of the the high spots in my life.

Hey Skipper,

I have a Rebekkah too. And she is also one of the high spots in my life. Do you think it is in the name or is it that you and I are extremely lucky fathers?

Wal, Skipper, it is also the anniversary of the death in 1984 of Ron Hubbard, the man who wrote "Dianetics" and built Scientology -- one of the age's more colorful characters.

So there's another verse.

Kendall, today is my sister's birthday.

here is something from Khalil Gibran on mixed feelings.. (from the Prophet)

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

The day my son Gideon was born 35 years ago, his twin brother Joshua died in childbirth. Never have I expeerienced such pain and grief simultaneously.

Think of all the babies who must have been born on September 11th 2001, or on December 26th 2004.

My father died on my twin sister's & my birthday.

How many of us remember the date of the Shuttle disaster? Most us who were old enough remember it well, but need to be reminded of the date.

I think when bad things happen on days notable days in our lives we recall the exact day much better. That notable day is never the same, even though other equally tragic events may fade over time.

I don't know quite what to make of this. It's just a reflection on the way our minds work. For years I thought of Mom on the anniversary of her death, but rarely mark the day now.
