Hard copies Arte $20 each, or $17 if ordering all three, and in all cases I'll pay the postage and handling. -Chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 17 May 05 - 12:29 PM Barry, Thanks for the kind words. I'm looking forward to spending some time with you at Mystic. It's hard to believe that soon I won't be a mystic virgin anymore! Charley, I should introduce you to our website designer. I think you two would get along nicely. Are you seeing anyone right now? |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Charley Noble Date: 16 May 05 - 09:04 PM It's rumored that the museum store already has asupply of these CD's but you guys better bring more. Nice website! See you at Mystic! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: Barry Finn Date: 16 May 05 - 05:04 PM Hi Richard & Peter As ever I always come in at the tail end but like a banquet set for a king its best digested slowly & well savored. Well I have certainly digested your CD. I'm home most of the time now so it's been a most welcomed guest in our house & by now my wife & kids are positive that they all have a special, on going relationship with both of you. The material you've chosen is, as far as I'm concerned, in a "league of its own" & should raise the bar for those that follow, but knowing you guys I'd be shocked at anything less. Well I'm sure you know how partial I am to your recording of 'Hard Times in Old Virginia' it really is a killer. You can't believe how bowed over I was to hear "Goodbye, My Lover, Goodbye". For years I've been keeping a weather eye out & an ear towards the wind in hopes of hearing someone singing this (it may be common to others but it wasn't to me). I've only ever read of references to this song & have seen it in print & knew right off that it was a kick 'em & kill 'em & a knock 'em down dead song & after hearing you guys doing it I knew I was right all along. I'd say my opinion is that its been a good few years & still I haven't heard better & only a few I'd say were an equal to what you two have here. Make sure you bring a good supply of your CD's to Mystic & plan on very little sleep & lots of late night (& day) singing. It'll be good to see & hear both of you again in a few weeks. Barry |

Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 06 Apr 05 - 03:31 PM I'll certainly see Danny and Joyce, since I booked them for the festival, and will gladly pass your message on to them. Thanks again for the good word on the CD. You know, since this other Chalkie White got wrecked at The Ship and might have forgotten everything he did that day.......it could've been you. *BG* Chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Guest Chalkie Date: 06 Apr 05 - 08:50 AM Sounds a very good epitaph, but unfortunately not one that can be attributed to me.... not in The Ship in Marske anyway. Never been to the place, although I do have a friend who sings in the Marske Fishermens Choir. Excellent Choir. If you see Danny and Joyce at the San Francisco Maritime Festival, tell them Alan White, from Landlocked, says hello. You'r getting a couple of fine harmony singers there and what Danny doesn't know about shanties and Cicely Fox Smith is not worth knowing. All the best with the new CD. |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 05 Apr 05 - 02:46 PM Ditto, Chalkie, on what Radriano said. I should have known there's more than one "The Ship" in Yorkshire! Where I saw your sign was in the lobby of the pub/hotel in Marske, if my memory's correct. I took a photo of it. Painted in red against white, it say's "I got wrecked at 'The Ship.' Chalkie White, 1999." Chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 04 Apr 05 - 06:14 PM Our new release "Boldly from the Westward" is now listed on the Chantey Cabin site (see the link two posts before this) for those in the UK who might want to get the album and avoid paying overseas shipping costs. Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Guest - Chalkie Date: 04 Apr 05 - 04:10 AM Hi' Chanteyranger and Radriano. Yes 'tis I, Chalkie White, however, a word of caution, I would imagine that most Chalkie's would have a Sir Name of White. "The Ship" pub in Yorkshire could be one of many and though I have frequented The Ship in Whitby a number of times during Whitby Folk week I am at a loss as to what the inscription could be, perhaps just another namesake. I sing in a shanty crew over on this side of the pond and intend nicking a couple of the shanties on your CD. Hope this is OK with yourselves? I've since found the chorus and one verse in Stan Hugill's Seven Sea's, which I'd never noticed before, but thanks for the reply. For anyone who does not know, Jan and Ken at the Chantey Cabin hold what I believe is the worlds largest collection of maritime recordings for sale. Their site is well worth a visit with good links to other sites and many artists own web sites. All the best Chalkie |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 01 Apr 05 - 11:37 AM Many thanks to Ken and Jan Lardner of the Chantey Cabin for making "Boldly from the Westward" available at this season's maritime festivals in England. Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 31 Mar 05 - 02:54 PM Thanks you, Chalkie! Are you Chalkie White? Saw your inscription at "The Ship" pub in Yorkshire a few years back: "I got wrecked at The Ship." The words are ungrammatical, making it understandably hard to decipher. They are: Ten stone, the wind am over (meaning the wind is over) Chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Guest - Chalkie Date: 31 Mar 05 - 02:41 AM Bought a copy of this CD, Boldly From The Westward, at Lancaster Maritime Festival (England) last weekend which has some cracking songs/shanties on it, some of which I have never heard before. Can anyone tell me the rest of the first line of the chorus on Ten Stone, following:- Ten stone, ten stone Ten stone the wind and............. Well done Radriano and Chanteyranger. |

Let me know what sort of information you'd like posted about "Out of the Rain" and we'll see what we can work out. It's not likely to get posted as fast as the basic site - as you know, I'm stretched a bit thin these days - but I think something can be arranged. I'm also hoping to get to Mystic this year - but I won't know my work schedule until just before the festival, so who knows. At least we have the CD! JudyB

Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 02 Mar 05 - 01:45 PM Hi Franz. Glad you're enjoying the album. All recordings have echo (reverb) added in the recording/mixing process unless the recording takes place outside of a studio. Even then the amount of reverb can be controlled somewhat. There are programs available that can even add the ambience of different halls to a recording. Ultimately the amount of reverb on any given track of a recording is a choice made by the recording artist or producer. Richard |
Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: Franz S. Date: 01 Mar 05 - 07:58 PM I got my copy in the mail from Peter this afternoon and I'm enjoying it greatly. I have to say that the voices sounded a little flat (is that the word I want?) but eventually I realized that what I was missing was the echo effect of the "Thayer"'s hull. Or the "Balclutha"'s cabin. Doesn't sound the same in my den as it does in its appropriate place. Actually, "Sundown Below" does seem to have that echo. How did you do that? |

Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 24 Feb 05 - 11:54 AM Hey Charley, I unearthed a letter I received from John Conolly (3/19/01) giving me permission to record "Here's to the Grimsby Lads" (that's the official title). Included with the letter was a lyric sheet for the song. At the bottom of the page was this: "This is one of the first songs we [John Conolly and Bill Meek] ever wrote together ... and it is more popular in 1998 than it was over thirty years ago! We have recently received recordings of it from Holland, Germany, Denmark and Poland. It is a simple tribute to the men who did the toughest job in the world ... the deep-sea trawlermen whose triumphs and disasters were an integral part of our growing up, and whose lives we have tried to chronicle in many of our songs." So that would suggest the song was written around 1968. Both Conolly and Meek often re-write verses and phrases as time passes. In the original version of "Here's to the Grimsby Lads" the second line of the last verse read: "To the fisherman's prayer the breeze sings the 'Amen'" Later this was changed to: "Another trip's over, another day's done" Similarly, the phrase at the end of the first line in the last verse was changed from "... the new sun in gleaming" to "... the new sun is beaming." |

Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: radriano Date: 22 Feb 05 - 04:31 PM Ron, Thanks for the invite! I'm not sure at this point how much leeway we'll have timewise around Mystic. Our schedules will become clearer as Mystic approaches and we will let you know. Charley, I originally learned "The Grimsby Lads" out of Roy Palmer's book, "The Oxford Book of Sea Songs," 1976. The book was reprinted last year, I believe, under the title "Boxing the Compass." I know I have a recording of Bill Meek and John Conolly singing it - perhaps there will be a composer's date on that. Richard |

Subject: RE: Review: Chanteyranger and Radriano's new CD From: GUEST,Charley Noble Date: 17 Feb 05 - 01:33 PM Riggy- And you've done some nice subtle concertina accompaniment on it as well. The songs that are now sticking in my mind include: "Hard Times in Old Virginia" "Down Trinidad" "Mobile Bay" "Swing Your Tail" "Pull Down Below" I think the old shantymen would have bought you boys a round after they heard you sing these. And, who knows, you might have woken up hours later on a 3-skys'l hooker bound for Cape Horn. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: ADD: Sundown Below From: radriano Date: 14 Feb 05 - 12:16 PM Sharyn, thanks so much for the kind words. It's always a thrill when fellow singers praise your work. Our detailed liner notes are not complete, Charley, but Sundown Below is: Track 18 - SUNDOWN BELOW Lead: Richard Chorus: Peter, Dick Holdstock, Denis Franklin, Shay Black. A cargo loading shanty taken from F.P. Harlow's Chanteying Aboard American Ships, 1962. Harlow says "Sun Down Below, Mobile Bay, Way Sing Sally, and Hilo, My Ranzo Way, are purely West Indian Negro chanteys sung while hoisting cargo from the hold of ships and seldom if ever sung by sailors at the halliards." They may have been sung more frequently than Harlow suggests. Stan Hugill, in Shanties from the Seven Seas, says that Mobile Bay was sung by sailors aboard ship at the halyards and at the capstan and pumps. This song is also mentioned in Lydia Parrish's book, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands, 1942. Parrish says "This tune was sung at the end of the day as a hint to the captain, when the hold was too dark for the stevedores to see what they were doing." Verses three and four come from the Lydia Parrish book. LYRICS: SUNDOWN BELOW Six o'clock I hear 'em say Chorus: Sun down, sun down below Six o'clock I hear 'em say Chorus: Sun down, sun down below Aye-a-a-a-a Aye-a-a-a-a The day's been hot, you all do say Time to quit and go away Aye-a-a-a-a Aye-a-a-a-a Sun is down an' I must go Sun is down in the hole below Aye-a-a-a-a Aye-a-a-a-a I hear my captain say Sun is down and I must go Aye-a-a-a-a Aye-a-a-a-a Pack our duds and dinna' pail Come back sure befo' you sail Aye-a-a-a-a Aye-a-a-a-a |
