Subject: BS: why do new light bulbs stink bad ???????
From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker

since living in an old victorian house
me and mrs noticed an occasional mysterious smell of rancid fish

for first few years we thought it might have been drains,
or some chemical solvent based damp proofing agent in foudations..

or something even more suspicious decomposing under floor boards..

then recently i realised it occured everytime i changed a lightbulb..

never noticed it anywhere else before..
but the lightbulbs we buy from Tescos stink something rotten
for the 1st few hours they're installed..

why..?????

and they dont last very long either..

Oil residue left on them from the manufacturing or packing process. Wash with warm water and detergent, dry thoroughly, and you'll be right.

The great disadvantage of the back-entry condition here is that numskulls of little brain can write posts pretending to be from me without any consequences except, perhaps, extending their own period of occupancy in Deep Stupidity, as a karmic penalty.

Anyway, I don't as a rule bother to tell strangers when I am going potty.

Hi Punkfolkrocker.

A little story first!

A couple of years ago I had to take a wrongly delivered letter round
to another company, I walked into their office and stopped inside the
door to get my bearings. Straight away I noticed the smell, rancid
fish!! I said to the receptionist "you have something elecrical
burning in here, check your sockets and things". They had two heaters
running and when she touched the plug of the second one she burnt
her hand.

Please check the electrical things that you have, that smell is
characteristic when some of the plastics that they use are getting
hot.

Best wishes

Fieldvole

If your house still has the original wiring, Fieldvole is probably correct. Also check for dried out, cloth covered wires. You may need to change them.

Fieldvole is spot on, I bet the light fitting is red hot after it's been on an hour or two. First thing to do is change the pendant fitting, you'll probably find when you take the old one apart that one terminal or screw is discoloured and probably loose to. You will find that your light bulbs will last longer too.

Why would this appear only when the lightbulbs were newly changed, do you think? A loose connection would smell regardless of the age of the bulb as long as there WAS a bulb.

It's not normal to have your nose that high in the air unless you're up there changing a light bulb.

Buy better quality bulbs.

Did someone perhaps smear a little limburger cheese on your light bulb?

Remember melting your crayons on the hot lightbulb when you were a kid?

I had a helluva nice multicoloured sculpture by the time I'd used up the colourbox.

Hey Brucie your second one said it was plastic lampholders, changed the lampholders and it was OK.
I don't know what kind of fish you make plastic from though.

At least try my suggestion. IF it is true that this only happens with new light-bulbs, that's the only explanation so far that makes sense. A socket or a circuit no matter what they are made of do not care whether a bulb is new or not. Use your reasoning powers. IF phenomenon X is intermittent then it is a function of an intermittent variable, not a constant.

Hmmm, Curiouser & curiouser, isn't it? D'ya spose they were making the old light fixtures out of ground up fishies? Was the electrician who installed them eating "fish & chips" or sardines at the time? Or did he just use fish oil to lubricate them all?
I was munching some prepackaged snack mix this evening which tasted oddly of fish! Perhaps the electrician moonlights at the snackmix factory?
