Here are the rules to "I Spy" as I understand them:

1) A person is selected to be "It".
2} "It" thinks of some thing or some person
3) "It" says the set sentence "I spy etc" adding the letter that
   is at the beginning of the word [what he or she is thinking]
4) One at a time people try to guess what "It" was thinking about
5) "It" says 'no' if the guess is wrong {or in this cyberspace
   version doesn't respond if the guess is wrong}
6) "It" says 'yes' {or writes a post to this thread}when a person
   guesses right.
7) The person who guesses right becomes the new "It" and the game
   is supposed to start all over again.

I'm curious, is this game not known outside of the USA?

I would guess I spy is known in the UK considering lack of questioning posts from UK mudcatters, as well as people from the UK responding to this thread. We always said "I spy with my little eye something that starts with..." I've always wondered which one is my little eye. I have found a lot of variation in games and their names here though. There's a cardgame, called Happy Families I think or something like that, that is similar to but totally unlike Go Fish. There were a couple more obscure card games that I discovered under totally different names with slightly different rules. They call tic tac toe naughts and crosses, which actually makes more sense then tic tac toe as soon as you realize that naught means zero (which was easy to infer, knowing naught means nothing, the first tiem I heard someone say "naught point five") I wonder what other games US has and UK doesn't or vice versa or different versions. Sorry for the drift.

Well that's just not fair.. we don't have waste paper, we recycle our paper so it goes in a box, and my rubbish bin is called a rubbish bin and is full of cloth scraps and juice cartons.

I could just as easily say I spy something beginning with R and you'd never get it because it's called something else in every other country and isn't something you'd normally see lying around in open, on the desk!
