I have heard that you have to have your personality surgically removed before you are allowed to work in a library. Is this true?

No Libraries are fine. However - the folks who try to smoke and eat meat pies and chips in the library are rubbish - in my opinion. They NEED to go outside. Foxhunting anywhere - the library included - is rubbish also.

libraries are the closest you can get to heaven on earth. well - if they have a children's play area they are. And a good science fiction section. And a good reference section. And comfortable reading areas.

of course - many don't. THOSE are rubbish.

There is not much point in going to a library if you can't read. If you can, it opens up the Entire Universe for your exploration.

It helps if you can read without moving your lips.

(Married to a librarian. And I know lots of librarians. Plenty of personality.)

Here yah go!

QUIET!!

(That's a link, incidentally.)

Nancy Pearl, the model for the action figure, looks a bit like that, but she doesn't dress like that. It's an deliberate stereotype, done as a joke. She's on the radio (local NPR affiliate) once a week, talking with the host about her latest reading recommendations. She's married (unlike the stereotypical old-maid librarian). I don't know if she has any kids. She's a bookaholic, reads very fast, and absorbs several books a week:   all kindsa stuff, including mysteries, science fiction, general fiction, non-fiction. Good recommendations. I've read a lot of the stuff she's recommended, and she's never steered my to a book that I didn't agree was well worth reading.

She's also one helluva funny lady.

Libraries are a mark of a civilized society. In fact, I'm not sure civilization would be possible without them.

Don Firth

Love everything about them. The smell, the floors, the books, the quiet. Best free resource UK has to offer. Are they free in US too?
To join and borrow from? Love them all. The long and the short and the tall.

I love libraries! They're about the only place in the world where there's absolutely no chance anyone is going to play accordion or bagpipes.

I wonder if this guy I know would be willing to play his bagpipes in the Orillia Library if I gave him five bucks to do it? :-)

We have had fiddlers, bagpipers, choral groups (from Estonia!), string quartets, kids' choirs, pianists, guitarists, a brass choir, and others play here. I don't know about accordionists.

Yes, they do. At least in the Western US. The Rocky Mountain Spotted Book Fox is sometimes seen, but it is on the endangered species list -- it's considered "critical." It's habitat consists of thoughtful, insightful, well-written books and, well, it's another case of habitat destruction.

Foxes generally aren't found in public libraries. University libraries, on the other hand, are rife with them.

Well, as a totally blind person, I have extremely mixed feelings about libraries. :) I do love to go into them and fantasize about all the nice books. Actually, I've seen Braille collections.

The Internet has loads of them, like this one and this oneand this one for blind folks like me :)

JOhn, come and try Newcastle-under-Lyme libary, it's had a make-over. They've rounded off all the corners, painted the walls pink, built some little alcoves to sit in, got lots of new videos, DVDs and CDs, and put up loads of big notices with easy to read lettering. They've also removed half of the books, but you can't fight progress, can you?

Re. foxes in libraries:

It looked like the sort of book described in library catalogues as "slightly foxed", although it would be more honest to admit that it looked as though it had beed badgered, wolved and possibly beared as well.
-- Ah, but has it been hedgehogged?

"A book has been taken. A book has been taken? You summoned the Watch," Carrot drew himself up proudly, "because someone's taken a book? You think that's worse than murder?"

The Librarian gave him the kind of look other people would reserve for people who said things like "What's so bad about genocide?"

The university library I work in has applied for funding for an Archivist to work on material donated (after a lot of persuasion), and described as high academic status, but the university wants to support "research" into motor sport and - of all things - brewing, so guess what? We don't get our Archivist.

Books are for use.
Books are for all; or Every reader his book.
    Every book its reader.
Save the time of the reader.
A library is a growing organism.

                   — Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892-1972)

Mary Kay is one of the secret masters of the world: a librarian. They control information. Don't ever piss one off.
                   —   Spider Robinson: The Callahan Touch

Forget about the Senior Prom and go to the library and educate yourself if you've got any guts. Some of you like pep rallies and plastic robots who tell you what to read. Forget I mentioned it...Rise for the flag, salute.
                    -- (Francis Vincent) Frank Zappa

I pray that no child of mine would ever descend into such a place as a library. They are indeed most dangerous places and unfortunate is she or he who is lured into such a hellhole of enjoyment, stimulus, facts, passion and fun.

                   -- Willy Russell

My Alma mater was books, a good library... I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.
                    -- Malcolm X: Autobiograhy of Malcolm X.

And for those who are just dying to know what I look like -- here's a link. I'm the one in the first picture.
