Hear a sound clip of this African American spiritual HERE.

In the recording I have (that CD) the words are a bit unclear. Also I am hoping for more verses, and maybe someone here cah share the dots from a songbook.

Hi, Susan,

"Did You Hear When Jesus Rose?" is in Roland Hayes's My Favorite Spirituals (Dover reprint of his My Songs, 1948). Not an expensive songbook.

Budget's tapped out on Shaker songbooks for church-- so maybe someone has it and can share the song with me. But that book is sure on my list!

A seemingly related version is in Allen et al.'s Slave Songs of the United States (with music).
91. THE HYPOCRITE AND THE CONCUBINE.

[1. Hypocrite and the concubine,
Livin' among the swine,
They run to God with the lips and tongue,
And leave all the heart behind.
Aunty, did you hear when Jesus rose?
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
Aunty, did you hear when Jesus rose?
He rose and he 'scend on high.]
Roland Hayes's recording of it is on Charlton Heston Reads The New Testament (Disc 2: Afroamerican Religious Folk Songs).

Hm, I'll have to see if its tune looks like it. As it's sung in "Did You Hear," that text pattern would be verse and refrain, 54 lines each.

Thanks!

Yes it is similar. Without seeing Hayes' version it would be hard to say how much adaptation occurred at what point between Allen's times and the version I heard sung in concert recently.

I believe the Allen version is most likely a fragment of the "original," and that the repeat marks were left out, as is the case in a few of the Allen transcriptions-- tho the introductory notes indicate nearly every song had what we would think of as an A part and a B part, both repeating.

Hayes seems to stand (in time and culture) at the crossroad where the spiritual was a remembered folk song passed on orally, and where it began to be an "art" song. I'm still discovering him, so I may be all wet, but I regret not finding him till recently!

Thanks again, Masato.

~Susan

From Roland Hayes, My Favorite Spirituals (pp. 123-26):

DID YOU HEAR WHEN JESUS ROSE?

Mary set her table,
In spite of all her foes.
King Jesus sat at de center place,
An' cups did overflow.

Chillun, did you hear when Jesus rose,
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
He rose an' ascended on high.

The Father looked at His son an' smiled,
De Son did look at-a Him,
De Father saved my soul from Hell,
An' de Son freed me from sin.

Chillun, did you hear when Jesus rose,
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
He rose an' ascended on high.

Yes, that's what I heard. I guess I'm going to have to add some new verses to it myself.

Thanks!

Above now listed for indexing in Spirituals Permathread. If any new titles/songs are added here, please take a moment list them there.

Maybe like this:

DID YOU HEAR WHEN JESUS ROSE?
Adapted from Roland Hayes' version in My Favorite Spirituals. Additional verses (C) 2005 Susan O. Hinton.

1. Jesus came to Jerusalem
To 'fill the prophecy.
He rode in on a pure white colt
The people 'round to see.

REFRAIN:
Children, did you hear when Jesus rose,
Did you hear when Jesus rose?
Did you hear when Jesus rose (He rose)
And ascended on high.

2. Mary set her table,
In spite of all her foes.
King Jesus sat at the center place,
How the cups did overflow!

3. The soldiers came to the Garden
The Lord was crucified.
Mary wept to see it,
The day her boychild died.

4. The Father looked at His son an' smiled,
The Son looked up to Him,
The Father made the sacrifice,
And the Son freed me from sin.

5. The cave was dark, the disciples low,
To think their Lord was dead.
But when the stone was rolled away,
He'd done just what He'd said!
