I just saw a warning that the City of Dawin in Australia's Northern Territory may be right in the path of this bad storm. I do hope that Stewie and Cathy are well and properly battened down.

All the best to you good folks.

Art Thieme

Many thanks for your concern, Art. It is good to see you back on line. The supermarkets here are filled with people buying tinned food, batteries, torches etc. This one is bigger than Tracy which demolished Darwin in 1974.

If Ingrid continues on her present westerly track across the Top End, Darwin will experience gales with gusts of 120 km/h, but not the destructive core. However, if she turns towards the SW on entering Van Dieman's Gulf, Darwin could be in big trouble. At present, she is near Croker Island and is expected to cross Cobourg Peninsula some time this morning and then across the Tiwi Islands [Melville and Bathurst Islands 100-150 km north of Darwin] later tonight. The entrance to Van Dieman's Gulf lies between Cobourg and the Tiwi Islands. Ingrid is a very nasty Category 5 [the worst] cyclone. Gusts at her core at present are 290 km/h and were up to 320 km/h last night.

We were very lucky here in Cairns when Ingrid passed us by several hundred kilometres to the north but even we've had some disasterous fallout with torrential rain and localised flooding - our next door neighbour down the hill lost part of his front garden in a minor landslide - not minor to him I'm sure.

Well, folks, just know we are with you mentally and psychically. Right now I'm listening to that last compilation you sent, Stewie. It's fascinating to hear what you're listening to on the other side over there. And the early Dave de Hugard is much appreciated as well. He is my kind of a balladeer.

Your storms go the other direction from ours, and your flora and fauna is like nothing we've got, but the guy your town is named for has shown us why yours and our biology went spinning off on such different and fascinating tangents. Stay safe and know we are thinking of you---and hoping your town is better built than in '74.

Yes, I'm back on line until we must move back after the renovation. Then I'll be gone for a while once again.

Art

Yes, a Category 5 - started out small swelled to a Cat 5, dropped to a 3, then back up to a 5 over the Gulf of Carpentaria Sea, as strong as Cyclone Tracy 30 years ago. Darwin was rebuilt to withstand much greater destructive force than originally due to Tracy, so hopefully things should not be as nasty this time if it heads close to Darwin. Winds over 250Km/hr are rather devastating.

Yes, good to have you back, Art.
My cousin and her little dog are on their way around the coast here. They were in the path of Ingrid but managed to outrun her. They're battened down somewhere South of her path. Cheers, Joy

Ingrid caused considerable property and environmental damage to island and coastal communities north and east of Darwin, particularly Croker Island and parts of the Tiwi Islands, but fortunately there were no injuries nor loss of life. Darwin was very fortunate indeed to experience only minor squalls with the eye of the cyclone never coming closer than 100+ km. Ingrid is presently in the Timor sea and on a south-westerly track towards the remote northern coast of Western Australia. She had decreased to a Category 3 cyclone last night, but is intensifying again as she is over water - presently a category 4 (260 km/h) and intensifying. She is 270 km NE of the Western Austalian coast and moving towards it at 10 km/h. Hopefully, the small, isolated communities will suffer minimal damage if, as expected, she crosses the WA coast in the Mitchell Plateau area.

Thanks for the expressions of concern.

--Stewie.

So glad you're all OK, Stew!! Especially as a Mingilang lady was quoted as saying it felt much worse than Tracy ... Max was bad enough for me ... did you have to move all your music collection downstairs?!
love and hugs,

Thanks, Joybell. You and Hildebrand have a great trip. Art tells me he is looking forward to meeting up with H. after some 40 years.

R-J, I'll email you.

I guess it will go off into the Indian Ocean then? Not travel down the coast of WA as sometimes happens. The reason I ask is that my family lives North of Perth. Cyclones usually have lost most of their strength by the time they reach there, but they can sometimes cause considerable trouble.

Love Lynne

Best wishes to all affected. Having been hit hard by Ingrid's north Atlantic brother Ivan six months ago to the day, I empathize with anyone unfortunate enough to be in one of the beast's paths.

It sounds like Ingrid was a relatively compact storm if the eye made landfall 100 km from Darwin and the city only experienced gusts and squalls. 100 km from Ivan's eye the winds were still at hurricane force and damage was substantial.

I just read about Faraway Resort being hit hard. Thankfully, no serious injuries. Thoughts and prayers.
