Both illegal. Crack WAY dangerous. Dangers of pot WAY overblown and unsubstantiated by any credible research. Far less dangerous than alcohol in reality. Does not promote violence like booze does, for sure.

C'mon let's not beat the poster to death? On first glance a subject that could invoke the type of reaction it has. But is there a rational side to it?

How about opium or grass? Again arms up in horror no doubt. But think of Coleridge, Shelley, Poe to name three. Was their perception/ability heightened by the use of narcotics. Or would they have been infinitely better without them. Truth is we don't know.

But there are probably some folks who can take either and function more than adequately. And some who will become a slave to the drug.
Crack though I can find no positives for, highly addictive and usually mixed with other substances that increase it's damaging effects.

This thread was started by someone with no apparent Mudcat history, three posts today to his/her name (appended to "GUEST") and no music content apparent. Do with it what you will, but I would recommend ignoring it.

Kilsyth... surely you realize it is a very serious post for some, if not most. Perhaps for all, because the use and regulation of "drugs", of any type, is an issue which affects all.

PS.... crack? Why did you have to mention crack? Anyone with a brain knows it ain't what it's cracked up to be.

There's frivolous, and there's irresponsible.

I must be on crack. Or maybe it's the Café... I tried to post, twice, but to no avail. Then, after coming through the back door, I find I have double posted. Deja two!

Kilsyth... Perhaps a post more tougue in crack would have... irresponsible you say? Nay. Tis good. Flesh it out a little. Ream the trailings of all and siphon the imagination. Do not dispair. The next post, and the next, is yours if you truly wish to spoof.

marijuana is so expensive these days that an addiction will ruin you financially just like a crack addiction will ruin you financially, and every way else. But legal marijuana would be better than booze. also, all of them burn out your serotonin or your dopamine receptors and you will get depressed then you will need anti-depressants! go for it. the big drug companies will love you!

Calling it bad taste, ok that I can accept, but stuff like irresponsible? Thought Cole Porter tongue-in-cheek enough, but must've been wrong.

The irresponsibility lies in starting a lighthearted conversation about something that affects others' lives so tragically. See Strollin' Johnny's message about his son, and think again about your opening gambit: "Pros cons or do some get a kick from champagne? ".

What to you is a joke, to Johnny has been a cause of tears, no doubt.

And you just reminded him.

While I totally agree that drugs have affected strolling's life in the most awful way. I do think that on an internet forum it is impossible to avoid every subject that has caused someone somewhere severe heartache.

I am thinking of the 'jokey' posts from blind drunk. Most of us know someone who has destroyed either themselves or their families through drink.

Or the foodie threads. Heart attacks brought on by being overweight are no laughing matter.

How about the what car do you drive threads? Know anyone killed by an automobile?

All of the above would 'remind' someone of something sad, but they are not innappropriate because of that. There was no intention to deliberately hurt anyone. And to imply the originator acted wrongly is misplaced.

Oh well, it's OK to have different opinions - I can live with that. And I agree about the intention not being to harm/upset. Let's move on.

I've been offered both. It seems that the crack folks offer it to you if you've done them a favor (I gave my neighbor a ride somewhere and when we got home he offered it to me...I didn't even know what it was...he was smoking it out of copper tubing). Anytime I've been out with a certain set of folks, it seems a couple of joints float around the room and they are always willing to share. They are also very cool about accepting my no thanks. :)

The Drug Problem

The other day, someone at a store in a small town read that a methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farm house in the adjoining county, and he asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?"

I responded that we did have a drug problem when we were kids growing up on the farm or in the city. I had a drug problem when I was young:

I was drug to church on Sunday morning.

I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.

I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter what the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.

I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink if I uttered a profane four letter word. (I know what lye soap tastes like.)

I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flowerbeds and cockleburs out of dad's fields.

I was drug to the homes of family, friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline or chop some fire wood, and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the wood shed.

Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America might be a better place today. -- Anonymous
