Subject: Obit: Sir John Mills From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 24 Apr 05 - 11:42 PM I was sad tosee that John Mills died, he had a long run though and I always enjoyed his films. His submarine films were favourites when we were on patrol. I did not know that he started out as a singer and dancer. A rather nice obit below from the Telegraph. Sir John Mills obit |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 Apr 05 - 01:20 AM I remember an interview with him several years ago when he talked about one of the navy films (senior moment means I can't remember which one) in which he is in the drink and being shot at by the enemy. The only way they could safely emulate bullets hitting the water around them was to explode 'contraceptive devices' around them. I remember the twinkle he had when he described this scene.... seems someone had to go and find all these 'contraceptive devices' and was too shy to ask for them! Mills was one of natures' true Gentlemen and will be sorely missed. LTS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: alanabit Date: 25 Apr 05 - 03:26 AM He sure had presence. He was in a lot of those black and white (in every sense of the word) war films, which I used to watch on telly on Sunday afternoons in the sixties. I think he actually won an Oscar for playing a mentally handicapped man. So I guess he had range as well. He made it to a good age. We won't all do that well! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: robomatic Date: 25 Apr 05 - 07:52 AM He is one of the greats. Such a variety of roles. I happened upon "Tunes of Glory" while flipping throught the television channels one night long ago and was riveted by the personality clash between (Sir) John Mills and a young brash upstart Alec Guinness. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: greg stephens Date: 25 Apr 05 - 11:58 AM His movies were the background to my childhood, fabulous stuff. Great Expectations was a favoutie, also anything with a boat involved. But my most abiding memory is when he put 50p in the hat when I was busking in Bath once. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: Leadfingers Date: 25 Apr 05 - 03:19 PM Pardon my Two Pennorth , but calling it 'SAD' when a man dies at ninety seven after a superb career of Seventy years , a marriage that lasted sixty four years , and a wonderful family round him seems just a bit off!! My favourite John Mills quote is about his Oscar ! 'Having spent all my life learning lines , I get an oscar for playing a Deaf Mute '- That was Ryans Daughter ,of course , Alba . |

Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: jacqui.c Date: 26 Apr 05 - 09:21 PM Alba - I feel exactly the same way. This was a man whose films I grew up with and who always seemed to be a real gentleman and a terrific actor. He was one I would have loved to meet. Anyone remember 'The Singer Not The Song' with Dirk Bogarde? Or Tiger Bay, when Hayley made her film debut? He even got onto the filmed version of Cats a few years ago. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: alanabit Date: 27 Apr 05 - 07:27 AM Thinking about it, I reckon Hayley could well be in her seventies by now! Sir John had a good innings. To be honest, I was surprised to find that he had still been alive up until so recently. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir John Mills From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Apr 05 - 07:56 AM Hayley will be in her fifties now - she is about my age. Juliet must be in her sixties. |
