Poor Miss Kitty. I hope the sun is shining on you today. It finally made an appearance in Maine.

There is a huge silly yellow lab sitting where ever he will be most in the way and cowering at the approach of Ed the Cat. Meantime, Alice with tail UP, sashays back and forth hoping for a lick or a cold nosed goose. Hope the picture makes you smile.

After Tom's valve replacement, he was doing just grand. But I was the one who needed anti-anxiety meds!

Take care, Kat. We're just so glad you're healthy again. I'll have to call you and tell you about the 39 ladyslippers at the head of the driveway and our adventures gluing the house back together (if it ever stops raining).

I understand the depression is fairly common after such surgery -- the meds will kick in (and then joy at being healthy will kick in).

Thinkin' about ya!

Yea to the meds for the bug, but, they also have meds for the bugaboo. Although I normally wouldn't condone such meds, but, perhaps they might have merit in this situation, for a short while. Anyway, I am sure you know best.

Keep that chin up, my dear. We're all pullin' for ya, eh what? Double thoughts and prayers at you. Heal well.

LOL, Sorcha, just a sort of wobbly line right down the cleavage, but he did such a good job it looks as if there will hardly be any scar.:-)

I met with the surgeon, yesterday. He said everything looked and sounded good and he doesn't need to see me for two months! One thing no one warned me of was what seems to be a common side effect...depression. In the past two weeks that has been harder to deal with than anything, plus some darn bug picked up from gawd-knows-where. We're treating the depression, hope the meds kick in, soon. In the meantime, thanks, again, my dear friends.

I don't have any reserves of energy, yet, so what I do have is going to walking, tiny bits, and keeping everything else on an even keel. I promise I'll get back here more often as soon as I am able.

Please know that I am growing stronger everyday and am so very fortunate to have the well wishes and care of you, such a WONDERFUL bunch of Folks. It's just awesome and I feel overwhelmed by it all, at times. Thank you, everyone so very, very much.

Pink? Elephant???? Spandex? What the hell happened here anyway? This is beginning to sound like one of the old Tavern threads! I mean like when do the flamingos get roasted and has anyone filled the lime Jell-O pit or oiled the hinges on the Virtual Door? Geeziz........Pink Spandex...........Hmmmmm, then again, I'll mention them to El Swanno 'cause I think his fishnets have had it.........

Anyways..................

The Docs were in and she has her scrip and will be going home this afternoon!!!   Another few days and perhaps we'll hear from her directly. It's hard for her to believe the amount of folks out there who are all pulling for her even though she's been on the other side of this many times. I have PM's and e-mails from at least 15-20 'Catters who have been following along here and even got a few phone calls from others. Mostly they are older members who have tired of the crap around here anymore......and that's a shame. What can I say?

Lemmee be the first to say THIS:

WELCOME HOME KAT !!!

Thanks for the update Spaw.
Folks just so you know..I know NOTHING about A -Fib and all the Medical terms so Catspaw has been kind enough to explain to me (on several occassions) what is happening when a term comes into the recovery that I don't understand.
I got spooked yesterday morning as Kat didn't sound so hot but after an explanation from Spaw my anxiety level dropped.
I won't post something I know nothing about...Ill leave that to those that have been there and rode the "Elephant"

So more TLC at the Hospital Kat ma Darlin,
THEN Home...
Seems your Elephant riding abilities are getting better and better!
Is a job as an Elephant rider in the Circus in your future...:>)
All is as it should be thankfully..
Love and Light and Calm Thoughts coming your way.
Blessings to all

Well Folks, kat didn't make it home as expected. A slight setback, but one that is not all that rare either. Her heart went into A-Fib yesterday after a walk and I got a call from Night Owl that kat was worried (as was Jackie) although the Docs had been reassuring. For your benefit as well, let me explain that Atrial Fibrillation is a common side effect of open heart surgery. But when we hear the word "fibrillation" we all tend to go a little batnuts a a result of too much TV.

What happens is that instead of the atrium getting a single electrical impulse, it gets hundreds to the node and hence fibrillates. Although there are several types of A-Fib, the most common type is not especially life threatening and thousands of us live with it daily. This is not anything like Ventricular fibrillation problems like V-Tach (Ventricular Tachycardia) which are life threatening rhythms. In kat's case it is probably the result of the surgery , the hearts way of rebelling at being messed with so much. They will keep an eye on kat's situation and she may be on a med temporarily or perhaps longer to keep the A-Fib controlled. It will hold her release a bit but this is not a major setback by any means and when I talked with kat last evening, she pretty well understood and what was very encouraging was that her voice really sounded good and strong, very normal. (I won't tell you about the hilarious conversation we had earlier when she was super tired and falling asleep as we talked)LOL

Keepthe good thoughts coming and our girl will be home soon.

Spaw

As far as Miss Thang's appetite is concerned, I'm sure food will look and taste better when she's in her own house. I've got bunches of great veggies recipes that I can bombard her with!

That's fantastic news that she might be able to live without that oxygen tank at her side! Unlimited freedom for our favorite feline . . . is the world ready for this? ;-) You betcha!!!

Thanks again for all the updates everyone. Pink Rules ;-)

Love and hugs to all here and especially to Miss Thang -- You'll be home real soon, darlin' -- so hang in there.

I've found that most vegetables are improved by simply roasting or grilling them. Toss with some extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and stick in a hot oven until tender. It concentrates the flavors rather than diluting them as boiling or steaming tend to do. Asparagus becomes ethereally delicious, as do onions, especially sweet ones. We recently tried beets this way. Yummy!!

Well look at this!   Paul G!!! Been awhile Man but so good to see you especially on this thread!

I talked briefly with kat yesterday afternoon and all was still on schedule for her release today. Let's keep up the help that you have all been during this so far. Still not a lot sounding good in food to her so maybe if you have any suggestions, especially veggie related??? Maybe we ought to start a thread? Hmmmmm.......I'll think about that.

Anyway, she's doing pretty well overall and now it's more a matter of time along with exercise and nutrition. And frustration. Not often mentioned is the frustration. You've gone through the pain parts and now you feel like you deserve to feel good......NOW!!! Even those who recover quickly want more and faster. The frustration leads to depression and nobody needs that. Being home helps but at times becasue you're still not upto par, thjat can be equally frustrating. Plus I used to feel so guilty about what I was putting Karen through in all of those different surgeries.........geeziz.......Thing was that when I told her that she looked at me as if I were nuts......simpleass woman said she just wanted me alive!

The peonies are in full "bud" at the moment so I had to look a little harder. But I thought the sunshine might help. I put a piece of rose quartz out side on the buttfly the day of your surgery and it seems most content to stay right where it is...

Jude's late night update...
Seems like Spaw does the Day shift with the no shit advice and encouragment and gets the facts (and boy is it working or what Spaw:>)xxx) and I come in on the backshift for the end of day report...lol

The news tonight is that Kat will be in Hospital till Wednesday as they have decided she needs a little more rest time. She is happy about this.
She walked more today and has been taking Spaw's advice...well hell why wouldn't ye take advice from someone who has been there and back again...
She has managed to eat a good dinner and other food she fancied today and is feeling stronger...
So all reports tonight are:
Doing well, coming along nicely, still weak but fighting the comeback round now..and doing much better than she was over the weekend...Thankfully.

Blessing to all
Love

MONDAY AFTERNOON

Just got off the phome with kat who had just seen her Docs and she is much stronger today and feeling better overall. They boosted he O2 level and that helped. They figure they can ween her from daytime oxygen in perhaps a month or so and that will be pretty wonderful for someone who has used it for so long.

When I called she was in the middle of a doctor visit and said to call back in about 15 minutes.   I did and again we had a pretty long talk before she said she was wearing out. I was really impressed with how long it took her to wear out this time and how much better her spirits are in general. She also sounds much better about being willing to push herself and THAT is the best news of the day. Kat was so focused on this operation and even her Docs have said how well focused she was. Believe me, it is sooooo easy to get discouraged and expect too much too soon. I think our girl has it back on track now and has quit fighting the elephant.

Rog and Rue.....I have tried to get in touch with you guys several times but I'm not sure I'm using the right numbers. My addy book is always screwed up and I constantly call kat getting numbers and addresses.......I am pathetic! In any case if you want to talk or touch base, call me anytime (I almost never sleep) or PM me the number(s) where I can reach you. I figure the two of you are worn out as well so I hope you're taking some time for yourselves.

Kat (and Roger),

It will take time! I was told that the effects of anasthesia stay with ya for up to a year after surgery. So, be patient--and realize that you are just that--a patient.

Roger, thanks for the call!! I forgot to ask for Kat's phone number in hospital---but be sure to give her our love. I'll try finding you at home to get that number.

Kat, heal and be well!! Will talk soon.

From: catspaw49

I am not a doctor; I just play one on the 'Cat.............

Actually folks I have learned a lot the hard way over the past ten years and I'd be happy to trade any knowledge I've acquired for the body I once had. In all truth, I am the classic case of "If I had known I were going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself." I honestly never believed I would live past 40 or 45 or have any reason/desire to do so........***sigh***.......As the saying goes, we get too soon old and too late smart. In any case.......

UPDATE....PLEASE READ

I called kat this afternoon and we had a long conversation. She is very tired and obviously somewhat disappointed that everything isn't healed already! The reality though as she is aware is that her body has yet to fully shakeoff the effects of anasthesia and the surgery itself. I was always fortunate to be a very fast healer but you can't force it or rush it. Her Docs are pleased with the way the surgery went and how she is doing now. I hate it when Medicos tell you you are doing great and you feel like shit. Makes me want to grab them and say, "Okay then motherfucker....Let's have a cosmic body swap and you lay here and do great.   I'll take your Porsche out for a 'Proficiency Run' to Cleveland and maybe catch an Indians game!" But it's true, kat is doing well and things will improve over time, but I'm sure a bit slower than what she'd like.

Several factors will cause things to proceed a bit more slowly. First she has to shake off the anasthesia and start eating some food. I told her to have the nurses bring her anything that sounds good or even edible no matter what the time. She needs to be walking 4 times a day at least for short distances

In kat's case too, her condition has been far longer term than just a few months. This problem ahs been getting worse and making her weaker and weaker for years. It won't take that long to fix but she'll first have to get back to the strength she was at last week. Then she can get a bit more aggressive and start building on what the new valve can give her.

They will also have to spend some time getting the Coumadin level right. It's the blood thinner and she'll always be on it but it can also cause some tiredness depending on what the INR number is. Vitamin K kills Coumadin and much of what kat eats (green and leafy) contains lots of K. The key here is to be consistent in eating and adjust the Coumadin dosage around that. You just don't want to be too high in the dosage.

With reasonable exercise and food, in just a very few months, kat will be much stronger and far better off than she has been in years. Completely healed with properly adjusted meds and on a decent diet and exercise regime, she'll be around for many years to drive both Morgan and Roger nuts! BTW...that Morgan boy got a set of lungs on him!!!! Kinda' like Mario!

So be sure to include a few extra good thoughts for just a little while longer. She's on the road and there's good times just around the bend!

Spaw

Thanks for the update, Alba. I know Miss Thang is having a rough time right now; but, I can't help but laugh when I get a mental picture of her 'riding the elephant'.   ;-) I'm so glad that 'Spaw is giving her the lowdown on all that's happening to her. I know he helped me get through my back operation a few years ago - Don't know what I would have done without the ol' saggy assed tortoise (luv ya!).

Hey Miss Thang -- Just a few more hours till you get back to your own house and your own stuff. Hang in there, kitty!!

Big hogs and snugs, Áine

Another wee update:

Saturday was a bit better for Kat.
She was able to do a bit more up and walking about with the encouragement of the Nurses and I think she is relieved that they didn't send her Home, like, yesterday..that was a worry for her as she felt so weak.
So Tuesday is the Day as her Cardiologist came in a told her so:>)
I think she was also relieved to know that what she was feeling was normal Spaw:>)...great that you talked to her and put her straight there..xx
Kat is still shattered, but thanks to Spaw now 'I' understand the process and I am as worried. All is going exactly as it should...so that is very good news.
Kat is now holding onto the reins tightly and "riding the Elephant:>)"
So...things are going according to plan and I am thankful for that...very thankful.

Kat ma Darlin, your almost over the hump so hold on tight....cause MUCH better days are 'a coming...
Miss Ya and Love Ya and holding you in my Thoughts.
With so many Folks rooting for you and sending their Love....well it a certainty, ain't it Sis.
Will post any news as it becomes available of course.
Blessing to all
Jude

Thanks, Spaw, for taking care of letting us know how our sweetie is doing. I am engaged in continous bargaining, so time is a premium. It is great to be able to check in and see how she is faring. I can't help but remember the first time this happened and it was you we were watching out for.

Get well, dearie, and do what the Doc's tell you.

Love,

Mick

Yeah, well Sorch, your Mom was right!!! I had leg pain for weeks. The neat thing now though is that they are often using a vein from inside the chest cavity!! The robot does it that way too!

Spaw
