Subject: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 21 May 05 - 03:06 PM We've just acquired a new kitten and are trying to think up a suitable name. She's a dark tortoiseshell, very tiny with big yellow eyes. As some of you may know we already have a cat called Loki. Any suggestions? We don't know much about her character yet as we can't pick her up til next week |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Peace Date: 21 May 05 - 03:10 PM Dammit. Helps when you call her: "Come get yer dindins, Dammit" or "Get off of there, Dammit" or "Dammit, leave me alone" or "Get away from the fish, Dammit." |

Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST, Puss Date: 21 May 05 - 04:07 PM How about Muddy - a good bluesy mudcatty name. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Scoville Date: 21 May 05 - 04:29 PM Wait till you get to know her and something will just seem to fit. Examples: My brother's cat is named "Tucker" because he was severely undernourished when he was little and was always "all tuckered out". He was almost named "Geronimo" because he was rescued from some kids who were throwing him up in the air and letting him fall. He seems like a "Tucker" now if you don't know the origins of the name (if you do, it's all wrong because he's more of an evil genius). My dog's name is White Diamond because she was a skinny, dirty, disoriented dog-pound parolee and my mother said, "You're absolutely the ugliest dog I have ever seen. You need a pretty name." Mom studied crystals in graduate school and loves gemstones, so "Diamond" it was. On the one hand, it's much too dignified a name for her, but she is certainly a unique, kind, and extremely lovable dog so overall, it fits her fine. I've had foster cats named Clementine (for her enormous Number Nine paws) and Zorro (because he was a spoiled bottle baby and grew up to be a fearless holy terror). My parents fostered some cockapoo/schnauzer puppies named Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, partly for their comic personalities and partly because Charlie in particular had furry "baggy pants" like the little tramp. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Sorcha Date: 21 May 05 - 05:17 PM Sabine came up with my kit's name in the chat room. Boudicca The Wicked Warrior Queen and it fits perfectly! |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 21 May 05 - 05:55 PM Our new kitten arrives today, the previous owners found her more than a handfull. She is already named Gua Gua as she was found near a melon stall ( melon has the root gua in Chinese) I will NOT be calling her Melon, how can a cat have street cred with a name like that? Jade has objected to the name 'Lash (the Cat)' and even objected to 'Ginger Khan'. So it will 'Oi', 'You!', 'Bloody Animal!' |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: KateG Date: 21 May 05 - 06:08 PM In again. Actually, I've always thought that if I adopted a pair of kittens I'd name them Snafu and Fubar. |

Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Alba Date: 22 May 05 - 08:00 AM LOL Bunnahabhain!! How about Smitten the Kitten...corny I know but.. I have two Cats that own me and one that graces our property with his presence on occassion. The Female Kitty is called Molly Malone, this is due to the sounds she made when I found her abandoned. Her wee cries for help made me think of the lines "alive, alive oh."..I know I'm nuts.. The Tomcat we have is called Simon...from Simon Templar fame...because he behaved so well when I brought him Home even though he too had been tossed out and had been living wild for a while... for a 12 week old Tom he was remarkably calm. He behaved like a "Saint" really..! Our visting Feral... ...well nothing actually...seems wrong to name Him..:>) I like to think they named themselves but they do not care what I called them..just that I love them and feed them obviously. Told you I was nuts Pixie...:>) Jude |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,freda Date: 22 May 05 - 08:07 AM Tashi - a suitable name for a pagan cat (Ta - She = thanks to the Goddess). |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Micca Date: 22 May 05 - 10:36 AM Pixie, you could use the same naminging principle that Menolly seems to have used for her dog it is called "Deefor" as in "D for dog" and call it "Seefor"as in "C for Cat" but if you want to continue the Northern theme Freya Brunnhilde or even Ceri ( not Northern trsd, I know) short for Ceridwen and prounounced Kerry |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,Morticia Date: 22 May 05 - 10:38 AM how about Ishtar or Astarte? |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: mack/misophist Date: 22 May 05 - 01:34 PM All cats have the same name. It's the sound a can opener makes. Seriously. Get to know the animal first or you'll never be quite happy about the name. The cate I live with are Fenris, for his aggressiveness and appetite; Orca, for her coloring and appetite; Hector, for his hectoring way with the other cats; and Melvin, because he's too silly for words. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 May 05 - 01:35 PM Well, some of Mortimer's other names are "Just a Minute Mortimer"and "Move, Mortimer". I once had two male kittens who were brothers. Their first names were "Off the Couch" and "You Too" but later evolved into Foolish (Foosh) and Marmalade. The were twins -- couldn't tell them apart except that the orange one had a fatter face than the black and white one. We also had a cat named Peppersass, which is a contraction of Pepper Sauce and also the name of the first engine on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,brucie Date: 22 May 05 - 01:42 PM George. I had a goldfish named George. He liked it. Try that: George. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,brucie Date: 22 May 05 - 01:43 PM George didn't last too long, though. I used to walk him. Was hard to get a leash to fit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: SINSULL Date: 22 May 05 - 02:27 PM Mine are Ed, Alice, Lizzie (she started as Elizabeth but it didn't suit her) and Freddy. I have had a LuLu, Munchkin (who quickly became Munch), Mandy(Amanda), (The)Princess, Homey (as in "Homey don't do that" from Living In Color), Fred, Susie (sometimes, SusieQ), Lucifer - all strays and mostly adult cats who came without their previous names and lived out their final years spoiled as all cats deserve to be. Learn who your kittie is before you name her. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: *Laura* Date: 22 May 05 - 02:35 PM My dad and brother always said they were going to get a kitten and call it Penfold. I like it anyway! Penfold.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Cats Date: 22 May 05 - 03:16 PM For real inspiration try Old Possums Book of Practical Cats, the old testament and the celtic tales....how about Rhiannon, for if she catches birds they will be the Birds of Rhiannon... sorry! |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 22 May 05 - 07:55 PM Our new kitten is no longer Gua-Gua. She is now known as Punk. She is a long haired white and ginger, and as the ginger colour is in a stripe starting on her head and finishing on her tail she looks a tad like one of those punk rockers from the 80's. Just wish she would stop biting my toes at 4 a.m.! |

Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: JennyO Date: 22 May 05 - 10:58 PM We used to have a magpie called George. For the cat, getting back to goddess names, how about Isis? I might have thought of Kali, but someone with whom I had a big falling-out called her cat Kali. Put me off a bit. Jenny |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: LilyFestre Date: 22 May 05 - 11:26 PM I agree that you should just wait and meet the kitten first. I once was engaged to a young man who brought home a kitten for me. It was a sweet thing to do and he was being thoughtful as he knows that I absolutely LOVE cats. He had named the cat but it never quite fit. With the engagement ending shortly thereafter, I changed the cat's name and it fit perfectly....the cat and I were in complete agreeement! Our current cats are named: Festre, Daphne, Normie, Goose, Ellie and Millie We've also had: Munch, Tasha, Einstein, Luther, Flash and Muffin =^..^= Yep, I love those kitties! Good luck with yours and let us know what you name her! Michelle |

Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 23 May 05 - 04:23 AM Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm going to see her agin tomorrow so I'll see what she reckons to them. We'd also considered calling her Pixel cos she's just a little blob of colour |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Crystal Date: 23 May 05 - 05:14 AM Bili (pronounced Billy) which it "cat" in Hindi. My flatmates cat is called luna, which gets changed to lunitic as she oftern runs around the flat like a mad thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: freda underhill Date: 23 May 05 - 05:46 AM my cat Baxter (Bakky for short) gets called bacchus when he's playful (not so often now as he's old and cranky) and once or twice has been called bacteria when being a pain. I look forward to hearing who your cat is! best wishes freda |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Catherine Jayne Date: 23 May 05 - 09:21 AM Wonderful news Pixie and Phot!!....I just hope that Loki doesn't think you have got her a snack!!! We will look forward to meeting her!!...please post some pictures soon!! PS.....when do you want Jack back...he's been terrorising my mogs!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 23 May 05 - 09:42 AM I think Jack would be a very bad influence on an impressionable young kitten. Not of course that Loki won't be. I think Phot's planning on getting the kitten into the studio once she's settled in so pics won't be long in coming |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: AggieD Date: 23 May 05 - 11:19 AM My two are Misty & Treacle Tart. Very apt names, Misty is a total air-head & often walks round the house miaowing at only she knows what, & treacle tart sticks like glue to my legs, especially in the kitchen when I'm cooking, hoping something tasty might just drop into her mouth. Athough as she's now got older & wiser, & been trodden on & kicked so many times when I didn't see her, She now tends to just pop in & out to see if anythings fallen. My old cat was Bonnie & was just that, a bonny little girl. Live with your new pudding & find out her purrrr-sonality. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: open mike Date: 23 May 05 - 11:30 AM pixel! a great name for pixie's cat i have a friend who refers to a certain disabled child we know (possibly autistic, not sure what syndrome or condition the kid is diagnosed with) any way i have heard her referred to as a "pixellated" child...as if a puzzle with some missing pieces?? or pieces re-arranged in a new way... |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: brid widder Date: 23 May 05 - 12:56 PM We have two kittens at the moment...we are not sure of their sex... Osama.... is very good at hiding... Bonnington... an excellent climber... if they stay they could be Sammy & Bonny... I really like Pixel |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST Date: 23 May 05 - 01:42 PM I had a fish called Bob, it suited him very well. If your wee moggie turns out to be a terror what about 'Sam the Skull'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 May 05 - 02:24 PM Pixie - are there any little brother or sister kittens that we could acquire one of please? Since the demise of Amber, Limpit has been promised a kitten and we've not been able to track one down yet. Having spent some of this weekend with a canine called Deefer (as in D for dog), I'm toying with the idea of Sifa or Kick as potential names. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 23 May 05 - 02:28 PM Actually possibly Liz, I spoke to someone a few weeks ago who told me that all her kittens had been rehomed but I got a message from her saying that she had someone change there mine and there was one left. I know its a boy, I'm just waiting to hear back from her on whether he still needs a home and on whether he's wormed, injected etc. I can keep you informed if you like, we don't really need two kittens! Not sure what colour he is or anything though |
