Whippets are sweet and gentle dogs, if you're not a furry little creature! They know they were born to kill furry little creatures. It's so funny. And I've never seen dogs who hate cats so much - they don't want to just chase them, they're actually pissed off at them! LOL - I think maybe they see them as competitors. I am sure they could learn to live with them, though - if you teach them carefully, and early enough.

HEY - Yeah! I'm looking forward to coming to Maine! Thanks SINS! My wife, Louisa is coming too - she'll be with me for the later part of this trip, so I'll pick her up at the airport and head North.

There's a radio DJ in Portland who plays tracks from MILES and from an earlier CD or two. I'll have to dig up his name, and send him a note. Maybe we can get him to show up too.

My friend Billy Dunlop embarked from the harbor in Portland on his solo trans-Atlantic voyage - in a 9' sail boat called the WIND'S WILL. He also left from there on his attempted circumnavigation in 1982 (Billy got lost at sea off the coast of Australia in 1983). Maybe I should look up his family while I'm there ...

Went 2 years ago and it was a great week.

I used to have a pair of greyhounds, both from off the track. They were kneejerk-efficient cat killers. It must be because they are bred to try to catch little furry things. When there is suddenly a cat in front of them that doesn't have the experience or sense to know its danger, the outcome is foreordained.

I don't know if whippets have the same psychological bent but I would NOT trust them within eyesight of any cat I prized.

I've had a great visit in NYC with my son and his wife over the last two days. My NJ pub gig fell through (bummer) and there was not enough time to replace it with another - so I've been forced to take a vacation!

I did tape a radio show with Bill Hahn at WFDU while I was here, though - he's a good guy, it's a nice station (lotsa cool gear with great studios) and we had a lot of fun doing the show. I will put up a Mudcat notice as soon as I find out when the show is to be aired (WFDU webcasts too).

I am heading out shortly for the Windham NY festival. The details are on my calendar at jedmarum.com - if anyone's looking for 'em. This look like a great event.

I am hopeful the planes are flying regularly on next Thu for this House Concert. I am scheduled to pick up my wife before I head to Maine - so the timing should be perfect - but you know how these things go ... I may be there solo! I've told her so many stories about Kendall, that I'm surprised she was willing to risk showing up with me! LOL

... actually she loved Kendall's recordings. There's no accounting for taste, I guess!

I hope she does make it because I'd like her to meet some of my other Mudcat friends too ... I believe she thinks Jeri and SINSULL and others are all just imaginary freinds!

As a former Southwest Airlines employee, Jed, I assume you know about the Providence (RI) airport as a preferable alternative to Boston Logan, which is nightmare to drive to and from.

I'm especially aware of Providence because Southwest flies there nonstop from New Orleans, the only airline to do so and (of course) the least expensive, too. It's a nice little airport, conveniently located on a relatively quiet stretch of interstate highway.

Of course, it may be a bit out of the way when the ultimate destination is "down east," which really means "way up north." But when traveling to Connecticut, Cape Cod, or even the city of Boston itself, Providence is a better flight-destination than Logan any day.

I have to find something to do until it's time to leave. I SHOULD mow the lawn. I SHOULD change the strings on my guitar, but I sound better with dead ones. I SHOULD make food, but it's too flippin' hot here...and humid, and the air's deader than my strings (or that last lobster that hid behind the pickle jar in the fridge). I'm becalmed in the doldrums of August. But the car's got air conditioning and the CD player still works. So, in about 3.5 hours or so, I'll be on my way.

I've just finished baking little apple pies and the chilli is having its second cook right now. I helped Mary make her sauage, pepper and onion concoction lat night (lovely stuff!) and am going over there in a while to help with salads and setting out......

We've just got back from a small but select gathering who enjoyed a wonderful concert from Jed. Kendall supplied backing on some of his numbers and a really good time was had by all.

They are all gone. Jacqui is helping me move furniture back.
Jed was a joy! He sang for 3+ hours with just a short break. His banjola has the most wonderful sound - almost as good as the banjo. It was fun to see Kendall and Jed playing together while Jeri picked up harmony. And Jacqui sang while Kendall played.

I am hurt that she did not share her joy at my birthday gift to her. I guess she really didn't like it. HARUMPH!

Lu looks like Jed's child bride. A beautiful lady. She suits him and him her. They're welcome back anytime.

I'd definitely go again! Next time, I might bring the guitar because there was a serious lack of participatory music and the fiddle never made it out of the case. Of course, certain folks needed to go to bed early, so maybe things wouldn't have been different.

It was a very intimate setting, and I got to sit in a position to see the man's right hand at an angle. Mr. Spider-fingers. He did use a flat pick for some stuff, but other stuff, I believe the flat pick was the nail of his index finger. And I want one o' them banjello banjola thingies!

Jed definitely uses his fingernails. In some thread, sometime within the last year, he 'fessed up to visiting a nail salon periodically where a nice Vietnamese lady keeps his talons in trim.

That way, he can "flatpick" one song and "fingerpick" the next without having to change picks! And he never has a pick slip off his finger into the soundhole of his guitar, which is a terrible thing to happen mid-performance.

PoppaG, I think it was Jed that spawned the Mudcat acrylic fingerpick craze. Mick got 'em, I got 'em, Rick Fielding got 'em (and they drove him bonkers), and who knows how many others. I'm giving my nails a little break, so to speak. The nail under the grown-out-most part was really thin and the acrylics weren't staying on very long.

What's pretty funny is that Rick named them "The Beef Brothers" because they looked so much alike - same tallness, same facial hair, same ponytail. Well, Mick whacked his off (ponytail) and I thought that the similarity was diminishing. So I get to Mary's, and find Jed with lopped off hair...in the same exact style as Mick's. Now, I KNOW these guys don't get on the phone and say stuff like "Ooh! You just gotta get a pair of these jeans! They make your butt look great. By the way, what are you doing with your hair these days?" Yet another Beefy coinkidink.

Kendall - and everybody else - there's no need to rub it in, it's bad enough as it is not being able to be there :-((

However, I simply couldn't afford the airfare, not coming so soon after going "'cross the pond" once. Now, what really bugs me is that I was actually just north of Boston for two weeks in May this year spending an enjoyable time with elderly relatives I'd never met before.

But, had I known about this gig, I'd have delayed my holidays to coincide with it. Heck, by US standards North Shore MA is just about within walking distance of Portland if you're sufficiently determined, isn't it?

So, stop rubbing, PLEASE ;-))

I was hoping to get up to Massachusetts today to see Jed, but Doctor's appointments have once again mucked up my schedule. Oh well I guess I'll just have to add a summer place in Maine to my wishlist.

You're right, Tami. Jed has created some wonderfully haunting tunes that turn up at odd moments. I was so disappointed that Brian didn't make it. He and Jed could have swapped some tunes and lyrics. Next time.
