Hi,

Here it is. This is a translation of the Clannad version (which isn't as long as the one alice gave the link to above) from the CD "Clannad 2".

I didn't do the translation (not good enough yet... I'm only learning Irish)... it was sent to me a while back...

I think it sounds much prettier in Irish.

I WENT TO THE ROSANN

I went on a visit to the Rosann And looked towards the sky
And around the northern islands
Like a deer being followed by a dog
Everyone at the bay would say
On seeing me down by the quay
"I can see clearly by your sadness
That you are a man being chased."

I met a beautiful young woman
But she spoke sharply
'If you are a man who is engaged to a young woman
I do not praise your trade
I saw a man on the mainland
Walking without shoes yesterday
I think you are the young man
That you are being chased."

We became tired and sad
And I asked the gentlewoman
"Where will we get a drink
That would lift the sadness from our hearts?"
"There is a little house by the road
and they always keep a drop
go and knock on the table
and you will not pay a penny."

I wasn't long making music
Before many came to the house
Every man with a glass in his hand
To congratulate the couple
Spirits were widely available
There was much drinking
And if I pulled O'Donnell's gallon
My score would easily be settled.

I happened to go into the pub
And I was nervous to sit down
In case the chase would come
And the young woman would be taken from me
When we found everything was as it should be
And I thought I should sit down
She said, "Make music
And you will not pay a penny."

When we relieved our tiredness with sadness
The young woman asked me
"Where do you live during the day
When you do not have a house of your own?"
"I spend some time in the pub
I do not place importance on money
The amount I earn during the day
I spend on enjoyment at night."

Chuaigh mé 'na Rossan = I went to the Rosses, an area of N.W. Donegal lying between the two sea inlets of Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) and Gaoth Barra (Gweebarra).

The same lyrics as given in the link above are in Peter Kennedy's "Songs of Britain and Ireland", along with complete translation and sheet-music notation (the link gives ABC). Reference notes state that the song was composed by Peadar Breatnach of Ballinamore, Glenfinn for a woman he met at a pub in Arranmore Island. Maighread N¡ Dhomhnaill recorded this song not too long back. And according to an earlier Mudcat thread, it's also been recorded by Scottish group Capercaillie.

Hi,

I don't think it has been done by Capercaillie (it's not on any of my CD's anyway). There is a lovely recording of it by Scartaglen on a CD called Celtic Odyssey (Narada ND-63912). Also done by Clannad on Clannad 2.

Can't remember if I've put the tune in for this before... will go check.

Alison: "Chuaigh" is spelled correctly in the earlier thread and don't forget there's a link on this thread (26 Dec) to Liam Hart's site where you'll find Irish language lyrics and abc (but no translation)

I know I have the whole song's English translation somewhere -- the trick is to find it...will get back to you on this. In the thread alison mentions above, i only put the translation for the lyrics actually sung by Scartaglen.

MudCat used to deal sympathetically with the acute accent above Irish (Gaelic) vowels, now it seems bent on serving up nonsense syllables. Why? And I don't want to hear any nonsense about using the ubiquitous forward slash instead.  ,‚,¡,¢,£. MG

24 Hrs later (almost to the minute) My last note, vis a vis accented vowels, seems to have been somewhat hasty. Now let's see cad ‚ mar a ‚ir¡onn leis san abairt ghairid seo. Interesting that this thread should be revived just as I'm listening to Altan's version (from their new CD "Local Ground", Narada 2005). Their title is "Amhran Pheadair Bhreathnaigh" (as was Miighread Ni Dhomhnaill's).

What's special is that Altan have thoughtfully provided a singable translation which I'll post here. It has a few scansion problems, and doesn't mention the Rosses, but I think it's a good start and I'll try to come up with a workable version.
