I can't do cryptic crosswords on my own, but I'm quite good in combination with my wife. I can often guess the answer, but she's the one who can unravel the clue so as to justify it. Maybe it's some right brain/ left brain thing.

Basic rule of cryptics is, if you can't understand how the clue works, you haven't solved it, even if you have the word right.

pick at food, which doesnt appear completely thrilling
8 letters

It was from the guardian, and most of the other clues were linked to it. The answer was electric
pick - "elect"

at food which doesn't appear completely "ric" (rice without the e)

thrilling - "electric"

cheers

It would be a help to know which paper the crossword puzzle appeared in. Some use puns or plays on words as clue, answer or both.

La Inglese has nailed these two, it seems to me -- electric and digit.
pick = elect, food which doesn't appear completely = ric(e), thrilling = ... electric
and digit = "a number"also used when speaking "of fingers."

Both would be considered high quality clues by solvers of Frank Lewis's puzzles in The Nation.
