Is the British Grenadier the same tune used for The Grand Old Duke of York? I think that's what I've heard it sung to, though I don't dare sing it: just saying it is hard enough.

I believe many of the Wurtzel's songs were done to traditional English or Irish tunes. I have heard the tune to this song at other events, but don't know what it is properly called.

The british grenadier is the tune that gets played when a movie wants you to know you are in England. It is almost the archetypal song for defining the British.

search for the Barrow Poets - they put out an LP in the 70's with it sung.

I would bet it was available on CD still. Amazon will try to sell one to ya!

We've had a number of threads on this song (see crosslinks above), but no solid information about where the song comes from. Is it from the Wurzels, or where's it from?
Joan from Wigan posted an ABC of the tune for her song in this thread (I'll post a MIDI when MIDI FTP gets fixed) - is Joan's tune the tune for the song in the DT, or is it of her own making?

I didn't know it was a song, I thought it was a tongue twister. I heard being used to test a microphone at a dance workshop.

I was sent this song recently and told to try it with the tune of "A Pub With No Beer" but I haven't had chance to try it yet.

It looks as if there are probably versions to many different tunes. This one has spoken verses with sung choruses. I know nothing about it's origin.
