well, we will have 8-12 folkies gathered under one roof tonight, just as we did at Christmas..(including 3 semi-regular Cat posters and 3-4 more occasional ones, and a couple who SHOULD, but don't)...so there oughta be some music happen..we have 6 hours left as I type this, and I guess I have squeezed all I can out of '98, so I'll just relax and let the New Year slip in quietly...maybe a friendly toast and a kiss for the wife...*smile*

....so, to all of you good folks out there, may you be happy, healthy, and get your computers tested for Y2K...(I know, MAC people don't have to worry 'till about 29470 or so....*sigh*)

1999 is already 1 hour and 25 mins old here in Ireland and I am "3 sheets to the wind". However I am still sober enough to type (just) and before continuing the party I want to join in Alison's thread and wish you all a

Little more than an hour left of 98. The kids couldn't last, there's a couple of inches of snow on the ground for the first time this season (northern New England), we're waiting for Guy Lumbarto to come on the TV LIVE from New York ( that should living things up,maybe he'll drop in for Sat night, live, too) & this time he'll sing the Burns's version of " Auld Lang Syne". Well, the new year is a coupla hours old here in windy ole' Wyomin'. It is unseasonably warm (20-40's farenheit) with no snow except in the high country. At Christmas time it was 20 & 30 below with wind chills of 35-45 below!

I thought I'd tucked in 'afore midnight and wished the kitties well, but one just insisted I get up and well...here I am two hours later wishing you all well, too and a very Happy New Year. I just found this site & became a "Mudcat" a few days ago & it has already lightened my life.

My heart has always been in the Highlands and elsewhere; when I was little, people thought I was from Scotland because of my accent. Now, I find when I read your notes and some lyrics, I slip right back into what seems so natural, like fallin' off a log (must be a past life thing). Well, sure and ya' know, my gran and all were from Nova Scotia, Scotland, Ireland, etc., so I guess I come by it honestly! Plus my mother really did sing me to sleep with a beautiful tune called "An Irish Lullaby" which my daughter now sings to my almost new twin grandsons who are of Rocky Mountain and Antiguan background.

What's the weather like in Newfoundland?

And, may you have a quiet, peaceful day of recovery in Oz!

Happy New Year from Connecticut. We had the best New Year's Eve ever last night at a house party with friends, food, music, kids, and no booze. I'm sure the latter accounts for my feeling terrfic today. We spent a lot of time in a group sing with several guitars and Ken's amazing playing of the saw (bow). (BTW, any saw players out there?) We did all praise songs that most in the group knew - the rest joined in on the choruses. All in all, a fine way to ring in the new.

Athbhliain faoi mheise duit!!!! After an evening of fun, conversation, and drinking a fair amount of "that vile black stuff" (as the fair alison refers to Guinness) , I am up and feeling super and looking out my window at a fresh coat of 8 to 10 inches of new fallen snow and the lake looking grand. (How is that for lousy sentence construction, Alice). Happy New Year to all my friends here. What a party we would have had, had we all been together. Could you imagine the sing about? And the debate between the RUSers and those that don't? We must have a convention, it will rotate between Europe, the States and Oz. Ha Ha, but I feel good this morning, for no particular reason other than I woke up on the right side of the turf and God has made a beautiful day for us.

and Barry, we DID sing Burns version of Auld Lang Syne...3 of us reconstructed the old tune from memory, and we sort of got thru 2 verses!..gotta learn that some year...

I see that, even as the year dies & is re-born, so is this community...we gained Katlaughing just in time for the celebrations (hi, Kat!)..and it looks like a welcome addition indeed...

so..as my brain slowly returns to coping with daylight and realizes that I cant drink that wonderful ale all day...(Islander Pale Ale, from the Maritime Pacific Brewery in Seattle, WA...sent to me by a friend [even Alison would like this])..I wish you all a gentle transition into the New Year and a happy, musical one, too!

We have a great thing here at Mudcat. I looked forward to checking in and seeing how everyone fared on New Year's Eve. Happy New Year, friends!

We went to the usual bluegrass pickin' house-party last night, and had the usual GREAT time ringing in the new year. Drank a little, ate a little, played a lot, kissed a few at midnight, and then did it all again.

Today we're taking down the 4000 Christmas ornaments around the house, and it's good to take a Mudcat break.

It was a quiet evening. In my family, we have a tradition of celebrating the New Year European-style, which means that around 6 or 7 pm Eastern Standard Time we toast the New Year in with our many friends across the puddle, then we call it a night whenever we want to. Sunday is our big musical bash with all the singing friends in the region. I love this cyber-community and wish you all a happy, healthy, 1999!

We were phoned on the morning of new years eve by the landlord of an inn in the middle of west Cornwall who said if "I send transport, wine and dine you and put you up for the night will you bring your instruments?"
What a question! we went of course, found a packed pub and were not allowed to stop playing until 2.30am new years day. Needless to say we had a great time!
98 was made all the better for discovering you folks.

Somehow this New Year doesn't seem like such a big deal, although it's certainly great to be through with 1998*. Does anyone else feel like 1999 is just kind of a lame duck year, dead time waiting for the new millenium (which doesn't start until 2001, of course, but there's no way to convince most people of that). Anyway, it's the days that are important, and the weeks (an artificial construct, but none-the-less important to the way most people organize their lives), and the seasons. Years? It's true that the earth makes a trip around the sun about once every 365.24 days, but so what? (I had a very boring New Year's Eve, as you've probably guessed). --seed

*Actually, we're going to be living with 1998 for much of 1999, I'm afraid. It's another of those years that won't die. Maybe we oughta drive a stake into its heart.

BSeed, sorry to here about the slow approch of the new year for you, but maybe in like a lamb & out like a lion. I'm just hoping that this new year is better than the last. Out of my family of 4, 3 of us have gone under the doctor's knife in 98, now we're all just looking to find some comfort in the incoming year. We took it very easy & calm on New Years eve, wanted to make sure it passed without any pomp & delay. Anyway here's to a better year coming. Barry

Hi, all, just an update on how New Year's Day fared in ole' Wyomin'. I HOPE the rest of '99 will NOT be like this.

My brother and sisters were driving back, at separate times, from our mom's in Colorado. Sisters hit a freak blizzard, after fair, warm skies, and barely made it homw. Brother hit the blizzard, his gas line frowze, car skidded sideways, hit another and he's just to get out of hospital, today. Luck thing is nobody was killed in the totalled cars AND his kitties, in their carriers, survived with only a scratch and some shock which they are now over! Same day, a friend had to put her not so old dog down after liver failure.

There's got to be a song in here somewhere, full of warnings (which we all grew up with here) about going out in the dead of winter to drive across the lonesome, wide open prairie.

Ah, well, we are grateful for his life being spared. He is a composer of classical music extrodinaire and it would've been a great loss. The car can be replaced, but not he. Thank the gawds & gawdesses for cell phones and for the tow truck guy who delivered the cats to us at hospital!

Here's to a better 1999 than the first day and Mudcatters, thanks for listening!

Happy New Year to all. Have just returned from a marvellous week at the Woodford Folk Festival. On New Year's Eve I had a choice of about a dozen venues to be at (including Fairport Convention so I'm told) but chose to attend the old folkies rock concert, complete with folk instruments. The highlight for me was Danny Spooner singing Memphis Tennessee.

'Tis nearly a week into it, and I still feel like sharing New Year's joy with you all. Big Mick, you sentence structure was perfectly fine--absolutely poetic. And, yes Lord, what a gathering that would be, to have all the 'Catters in one place! Count me in; and if I've already left this world when it comes, I'll come back from the grave for the day!

To paraphrase a pretty nice placard I saw in a catalog (I'll bet some of you have seen it, too), and to add to it:

Mozart gave us God's laughter; Beethoven gave us God's fire; And God gave us music that we might pray without words....... Then he gave us the Mudcat Cafe that we might all pray together.
