I for one don't think his "life" is "stupid, nor do I think he is an idiot. How could I since I have never met him.

I understand how you feel. My baby brother joined the Marines when he was eighteen or nineteen years old, during the Vietnam war. I cried buckets of tears but never gave up hope of seeing him again. I was so disappointed in him and I was really angry with my parents for encouraging it.

Sometimes people do really stupid things.

Just keep in touch and make sure he knows that even if you disagree, you will always love him.

He's your baby brother!

Sorcha, you know that I know what you're going through -- I had one brother in 'Nam while I was in Korea, and when we came home my youngest brother shipped to 'Nam.

If he keeps his head down and his good sense about him he'll be okay.

Hey Sorch,

   Of course we are all thinking good things for your brother! I am curious to if he was in the service previously and was contacted about re-upping? My girlfriend's dad was contacted recently, a former Marine, to see if he could be persuaded to reenlist...the thought being he has lots of experience that they could use. Did you ask him why he decided to do this?
   Also, on a more positive note, it seems that the soldiers have access to greater communication tools which means they can stay in touch with their families much more frequently. I hope he has access to it and will stay in touch with you.

Sorcha, at 50 he's probably coming to the end of his military career and sometimes as in World War two many older guys who were desk bound or acted as training officers wanted to have some involvement in the red zone and be able to reflect on it. It's coming from within the man.

He's been there before if he's 50, or at least he has a lot of experience in the military. And you want to go so that you can assure yourself that the guys you probably trained are doing okay -- or to give to the new guys the benefit of your experience and, perhaps, save their lives.

My uncle fought in WW II, re-upped to fight in Korea and tried to re-up again for Nam put flunked the physical... He just died (of natural causes, I might add...) a couple months ago at age 84ish...
