Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal From: katlaughing Date: 20 Sep 05 - 05:05 PM I was sorry to hear this. He said he lived through five Nazi death camps just to show them they could not kill him. Clearly he had a noble and just purpose when he became free of them. With his force of convictions and purpose, somehow I am sure he ensured his work will continue. It will be to the world's great benefit, too. Thank you, Mr. Wiesenthal, rest well, kat |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal From: Susanne (skw) Date: 20 Sep 05 - 05:37 PM I am saddened, not by his death which, after all, ended an exceptionally long life. I am saddened by what he had to live through and the vocation his experiences forced him to choose. If you're interested to learn more about him read Alan Levy's 'Nazi Hunter. The Wiesenthal File'. He must have been a man of exceptional character and determination. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal From: Peace Date: 20 Sep 05 - 06:10 PM I have been a supporter and sometimes member of the Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. Mr Wiesenthal's contributions to understanding about mass murder have been a beacon for all people. The Center did not just have as its focus Jewish people and their past. It also educated about other mass murders which have taken place in this world. Mr Wiesenthal was an exceptionally brave man. He spoke for people who could not speak for themselves. 'Mourner's Kaddish' (English translation) "Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen. May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen. May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen. He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen." Rest well, sir. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal From: Big Mick Date: 20 Sep 05 - 06:21 PM I consider myself privileged to have lived in the same era as this heroic man. The world, when viewed through a narrow glass is lessened for his parting. But when one looks at his legacy, we realize that he was a tree that bore much fruit. I celebrate the life of this man, and his quest for justice. God be good to him. Mick |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal From: freda underhill Date: 20 Sep 05 - 06:34 PM "The concentration camp guards stood with their rifles ready, awaiting the order to fire at Simon Wiesenthal and other prisoners standing along the edge of a pit where their bodies would topple. The future Nazi hunter waited to die. And waited. Hours later, after many of the condemned slumped in exhaustion, the camp commandant strolled to the line and delivered a reprieve: Soviet troops were coming and the prisoners would be taken away..." he survived, he lost 89 members of his family, and vowed not to forget. as he said, "If we ignore the past, if we distort or deny what happened, then the past will return. Only by remembering can we and our children and their children build a just future; a future in which human life never loses its value." this article in the Guardian tells his remarkable story - Holocaust Survivor Simon Wiesenthal Dies |

Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal (20 Sept 2005) From: katlaughing Date: 21 Sep 05 - 11:26 AM Mr. Wiesenthal spoke often of a dinner he had spent at the home of another survivor of the Mauthausen death camp, who had become a wealthy jeweler. The man speculated that Mr. Wiesenthal could have become a millionaire if he had gone back to architecture instead of hunting Nazis. "When we come to the other world," Mr. Wiesenthal said he responded, "and meet the millions of Jews who died in the camps, and they ask us, "What have you done?' there will be many answers. "You will tell them, "I became a jeweler.' "Another will say, "I smuggled coffee and American cigarettes.' "Another will say, "I built houses.' "But I will say, "I didn't forget you.' " |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal (20 Sept 2005) From: GUEST,Auggie Date: 21 Sep 05 - 01:02 PM "A life well lived". Such words are often bandied about but are never more apropos than when applied to one such as Simon Wiesenthal. Good job, buddy. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Wiesenthal (20 Sept 2005) From: GUEST,bflat Date: 21 Sep 05 - 05:12 PM He leaves the world a great legacy, that justice will be sought from the barbaric acts by a few. Mr. Wiesenthal raised our collective consciousness. One might ask, "Would we see the likes of Milosivic (sic)on trial today without Mr. Wiesenthal's determination for justice in the aftermath of the Holocaust?" Shaolm Ellen |
