Whilst at the Orton Guitar show (This Thread)I came across a range of guitars by Sagitarius, handmade in the Czech republic, played a couple and was very impressed with the sound quality, build and price.

Anybody got one?

The Website -doesn't say a lot.

I've heard they made the only decent copy of the Gibson J-300. But nobody can find out about that guitar either!   ;-)

back in 90's i used to travel frequently to czech/slovakia..

discovered these guitars over there

http://www.furch.cz/

some were eventually exported to uk receiving good reviews..

also some upmarket UK electric guitar company [cant remember name or details] outsourced guitar making to a czech factory..

so i guess its fair to assume Sagitarius could be a decent brand to look out for

Czech luthiers are one of the great undiscovered treasures. People like Prucha, Krishot, Holoubek,Capek,Lebeda etc make truly wonderful mandolins, and many of them make guitars too. Stelling mandolins are made there. The country has a history of instrument making, esp. violins and cellos, and a huge stock of tonewoods. Get in quick while the prices are still at Eastern Bloc levels! I played a Lebeda resonator recently, and it was mindblowing.

No need to get in quick for mandolins, they already cost as much if not more than English or American handmade instruments.

Eric; agreed, if you buy them in the US or GB. In the Czech republic it's a different story. Someone is making big bucks, and it isn't the luthiers. Also; I'd argue that spending the same money on a Czech mandolin as you would on a mid-priced US instrument, you would get more for your money with the Czech deal. Cheaper labour costs mean that they can put more time in on finishing, binding, inlay, tap tuning etc.

Furch is an extremely high quality guitar well established here in continental Europe (they also made my Duolian copy resonator sold under another name) and there is every reason to believe Sagitarius will also be of high quality. Every Czech luthier-made instrument (guitar or mandolin) I have seen has been excellent.

As mentioned above, people are cashing in on this an prices are no longer cheap.

Peace
