Subject: Cream Reunion - BBC TV 4 From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 13 Oct 05 - 05:20 AM I really enjoyed last nights showing Cream's Royal Albert Hall, reunion gigs. Much better than the 1968 farewell concert. I'm sure Eric is a much more interesting player now. And Jack and Ginger ... just great. |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: Paco Rabanne Date: 13 Oct 05 - 05:41 AM Morning chaps, I watched said programme on the good old BBC, and thought the complete opposite!!! Funny old world isn't it? To my perfectly formed ears, the modern Mr Clapton just noodled away using the bog standard pentatonic scale. |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: GUEST,Banjo Ray Date: 13 Oct 05 - 06:42 AM That's all he ever did, wasn't it Ted? I enjoyed it though - their timing was spot on. Ray |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: GUEST,Richard Date: 13 Oct 05 - 07:49 AM The preceding programme of EC and friends playing Robert Johnson was even better. Richard |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: M.Ted Date: 13 Oct 05 - 01:07 PM I watched some of it in the TV department at Costco--one of my fellow shoppers said, "It's amazing how far you can get on one guitar lick"-- |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 13 Oct 05 - 04:10 PM We're treading on some dangerous ground here! If we criticise Eric, then we're going to have to apply that to B.B.King etc as well. And why stop there! To many people, there are only two traditional Irish tunes - a fast one, and a slow one! The blues is - superfically - a " simple" music. But, of course, within that very basic framework, there is a world of fascinating variations. Robert Johnson, for example, had, maybe, three tunes and everything he played were variations on them. BUT, what marverlous variations! As I said previously, I thought Eric's playing at the reunion was better than 1968. He used far less " gimmicky" repetive patterns, and "the sound" was marvelous. |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: rhyzla Date: 14 Oct 05 - 06:35 AM I also prefered the re-union gigs film. I thought all 3 of them performed exceptionally well, considering the ravages of time. And it bought back memories for me of why I first picked up an electric guitar at the age of 13!! |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: M.Ted Date: 14 Oct 05 - 02:25 PM I've seen Clapton and BB King both, several times, and BB King puts on a way better show--As to Cream--Clapton was and is a much less interesting player than Bruce and Baker-- |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 14 Oct 05 - 02:31 PM Clapton is God. |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: el_punkoid_nouveau Date: 14 Oct 05 - 02:32 PM Bugger - missed both! Why do we have to put up with all the cr*p on terrestrial TV? And they want to put the licence fee up! |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: katlaughing Date: 14 Oct 05 - 03:23 PM Hope they show them over here. I'd love to see both programs. |
Subject: RE: Cream - BBC TV 4 From: Dave Sutherland Date: 14 Oct 05 - 04:18 PM It has been out on DVD for just over a week now - price about £22 and it contains various extras. Although I think that Cream were the greatest thing in rock music I always looked on Jack Bruce as more dangerous, more cutting edge than Clapton brilliant as both men are. A bit like preferring Miles Davies to Dizzy Gillespie. IMHO. |
