It is not often we witness to the trial of a dethroned head of state:

This one dates from 1648:

(courtesy of http://history.hanover.edu/courses/excerpts/212trial.html)

Sir, that road we are now upon by the command of the highest Courts hath been and is to try and judge you for these great offenses of yours. Sir, the Charge hath called you Tyrant, a Traitor, a Murderer, and a public Enemy to the Commonwealth of England. Sir, it had been well, if that any or all these terms might rightly and justly have been spared, if any one of them at all.

King: Ha!

Of course He thinks he is innocent
Of course He doesn't acknowledge the court
Of course He will disagree with ALL the prosecution has to say

HE IS SADDAM.
HIS WORD IS LAW.

And it doesn't matter if they are prosecution or defence. Both have their enemies.

I'm wondering if social and political organizations must go through stages as we were taught in history, feudalism, mercantilism, capitalism, etc. and the lesson here is you can't skip steps.

I do not really believe this. I think it is possible to attempt to do a thing that's worth doing, but do it so haplessly, unluckily, etc. that things get worse.

I do not think that history recapitulates destiny. I think Homer Simpson was more to the point when he said: "History is just stuff that happens."

History repeats itself.

there are many examples of civilisations that exceeded their access to a support base in Nature and catastrophe occurred. Much of their populations drifted away elsewhere.

Our globalised society today is much larger and pushes the limits much harder, so the fall will be more painful. There is almost nowhere left for out population to drift to, especially the size it is. It is starting to occur in Africa for some time, and you are currently watching it occur in Kashmir.

Quotations from Homer?

Perhaps it would be better for Homer Simpson to say that: - History is more about those who are writing and telling you about stuff that happens?

Unless you're a writer with connections I think I will have more success "quoting" Homer Simpson than you will have getting him to quote yourself.
