Contact your country's embassy or consulate and explain it to them. Do this IMMEDIATELY. Depending upon what country you're in...well, some jails are better than others.

if its a western country, look up services for free legal advice - don't go first to a private migration agent, amy of them are crooks who make false promises and take your money.

Rapaire has pretty much summed it up, unless you're in love with a local girl who's already married and you're prepared to go underground and stay on the run indefinately for the sake of your love - sleeping in doorways, eating out of garbage tins, doing odd jobs for shady characters you meet in seedy bars on the waterfront, forever looking over your shoulder, waiting for that knock on the door...What's that? You've overstayed in Australia? Why didn't you say so?
No problem. Get a job with the Department of Foreign Affairs. You'll never be found.

I've known a couple of guys who did this, one a Mudcatter, the other my brother. If you come clean, then you may lose your passport for a couple of years, but all will be well in the end.

I'm assuming that you are from a reasonable country and overstayed in a reasonable country.
For reasonable, read non-totalitarian.

Just to check one thing. You have overstayed by a few weeks, or some reasonable time, not 17 years, haven't you?

Overstayed by years? Numpty. If you've been there that long, it's almost worth checking if you still need a visa to be there...

It depends on which country.

If you overstay a US visa, awaiting a new and better visa, and you get caught you can be deported to your country of origin, and banned from reentering the US for a number of years.

If you discuss this with folks at your country's embassy or consulate, you may be able to get a short extension of your visa, enough to allow you to leave legally, as opposed to being deported.

Dave

When this happened to an American friend (in the UK) a few years ago, he solved the problem by going over to Ireland- no passport controls between UK and Ireland- and applying for a renewed visa from there. It took an extended holiday, about 3 months, to get ritually purified, but he enjoyed himself and even managed to get a bit of cash-in-hand website design work so he didn't live too badly.

So much depends on your nationality and your host country that advice may be useless. If you are entitled to refugee status your own embassy will probably not be of help. You also don't express a desire to stay or return home safely. Too many unknowns for any advice.

To be honest, it's difficult to see how things could get worse, if you've been there for years. I'd think you're pretty much certain to be deported whatever happens. Contacting your embassy might be worth a try, but if you go down the formal route then I'd guess you're almost certainly screwed.

Just out of curiosity - why...?

Graham.

My brother in law got in deep, deep shit when he did this in Japan, and it took a whole lot of money to bail him and pay the fine.

I overstayed my visa in Thailand by a week.
I paid a 500 baht fine and that was it. (Think it was about $30 Canadian) I knew that ahead of time and in fact all my other friends were doing the same thing.

Leave and then return...works well without a passport...accepted like AmericanExpress globaly...unless you are leaving Israel...and re-entering a Muselim nation.
