Subject: Hi everyone, I'm new...
From: Cyparissa
Date: 26 Oct 05 - 03:26 PM

Hello! I figured I probably ought to introduce myself before I start posting like a madwoman...

Anyway, I'm a chipper 18-year old living and studying in Durham, UK, though I consider my home to be Parkville, Missouri. I've loved folk music for...gosh, forever. My tastes are quite notorious among those who know me well, though I've managed to convert a few friends to the folk-side. My main interest is in ballads, especially those with an Appalachian slant. Anyone ever heard of the Child Ballads project? I'm trying to collect at least one version of all those songs, but it's an uphill battle.

Also, I'm just curious- is anyone here planning to go to the Kate Rusby concert in Durham this November? My folk music group is planning to go, and we're trying to get as many people to come with us as possible in order to get cheap prices on tickets.

Well, that's me. It's nice to meet y'all. :)

Hi, Cyparissa: Chalk me up as someone who knows Missouri well, and has performed there at the Big Muddy Festival in Boonville on two occasions. Despite us mostly being old codgers, or codgerettes, we all started out younger. I can actually remember being 18 and the excitement of hearing folk songs. It can be a life-long love, and it just keeps getting better.

Well, it looked like 'Berta, but she walked too slow. Hi Cyparissa! Welcome; especially great to hear you're doing ballads. The amazing David Kleiman has published a magnificent digital edition of the Child Ballads with notes, maps, glossary, search index, tunes, the works - check out the site at http://www.heritagemuse.com/.

The actual thing costs money, just as cds and books tend to (and the mac version isn't out yet - rrrr), but it and David are great resources to know about anyway (he's a great friend and mentor), and the site has a terrific links page that will guide you to many other good ballad resources.

Best,
Ken in NY

Welcome anyway!

Ahhhh, provin' that Missouri exists is actually harder than provin' than you exist, Big Mike....

Unfortunately fir me, I got a heavy dose of proff when my folks moved out to Hansas City, Mo, back 'round 25 years ago and hired me to drive a U-Haul ruck wid their furniture in it and 'bout half way from St Louis to Kansas City the U-haul broke down and they had to send another one... It was a hunner degrees an' I had to move every danged piece of furniture and every box by myself from one truck to the other,,,,

Don't think I'll ever firget Missouri, that is if it exists... Somehow I'd sho nuff like someone to prove it don't so I can retire them memories...

Well, Cyparissa, as you can gather from the above, we may be old (some of us) but we couldn't be considered sane. I would like to welcome you to the 'Cat. I was in Durham, your Durham, in August. Actually visited Durham University and took the tour of the castle. My daughter attended classes there before she wore out and married an Englishman.

I live in Guam, in the south Pacific and I will extend the same offer to you that I extend to everyone. If you're ever in this neck of the woods, drop in!

Hi, Cyparissa! Another 'codger' here---and welcome to the best folk forum in the Galaxy. You are settled in one of the hottest hotbeds of folk music in the UK. Somebody mentioned some of the Newcastle High Level Ranters. Add to them Benny 'the whale' Graham, Jim Sharp, Vin Garbutt, Terry Conway---och!, I could go on, and on. If you are any kind of folk [or decent country, or Appalachian, --Dylan, Beatles, paxton, etc., etc.,]please don't deprive those Northumbrians and Durhamites of your talents, eh?

I'm not sure what a chipper is, does it mean you work in a chip shop? Anyway, you're welcome to Durham. And don't mind some of the GUESTS round here, it is quite open access so you have to take the rough with the smooth. If you're only only 18, you're one of the few here more or less young enough to sing these here child ballads. Good luck, and enjoy the Kate Rusby concert. And life.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

And yes, Missouri really does exist. Though I can't exactly think of a way to prove it...oh well. Sorry Bobert!

As for music, I only have a few favorite artists. For the most part, I'm more interested in the song itself than who sings it. That said, I absolutely love all music by Jean Ritchie and Custer LaRue. Both have fantastic voices and their songs are just fabulous. Some of my favorite songs are...hmm, let me choose a few..."Pretty Saro," "Barbry Ellen," "If I Were A Blackbird," "The Great Silkie,"...the list goes on and on.

Yes, my folk group is an offical university society- we have a president and everything. So yeah, I might see you around, Crystal. :)

My name comes from Greek mythology, the legend of Cyparissus. I'm only using it because my real name (Elizabeth) is too common and already taken. But feel free to call me Liz, or Pinky, or Rissa- it's all the same to me.

When you say "collect" childs - are you looking to get them live, or just trying to find the text for them? If the latter we have (I believe) at least one variant of each in the DT.

Welcome Cyprarissa!

I'm new here too. My mother's side of the family comes from a small town in Missoura (I spell it as we in the southern part of Missouri say it :) called Licking. I believe it's got a prison as it's main employer these days. Just up from bbc's family in Springfield, actually.

I spent some of my early years in Rolla and in consquence have always felt like a small town girl living always in big cities. I also as young girl grew up listening to Cardinals baseball and the Grand Ole Opera on the radio. Yeah, all those Hee Haw shows with Mini Peal are things I relate to- at least from my childhood.

I think that if you grow up listening- to everything- in that area, you have an ear for the past and it's a mixture of folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and traditional music with a little rock n' roll mixed in.

I look forward to reading your posts. As for Kate Rusby- I hope to see her in concert when I have the opportunity. Many people have raved about her. Have a great time and please report back. I, for one, would be interested in what songs she chooses to sing in concert and what ones touched you.

Best to you and the welcoming committee,
SunnySister

Hi again, everyone. To answer people's questions, yes, I live in the rather nice part of Durham. Since I'm in Castle college, my dorm is just up on the bailey. It's quite nice, if a bit small.

I don't really know much about Kate Rusby other than the bare bones of the songs she sings. I must admit that I tend to like her renditions of traditional folk better than the folk-inspired songs she composes, but they're all still quite good. Definitely good enough to merit seeing her in concert.

Who is Custer LaRue? Well, for a start try searching for her CDs on amazon.com. I absolutely love everything she does- which, as far as I can tell, is nothing but tradtional folk. My favorite CD of hers so far is "The True Lover's Farewell," but I have two more coming in the mail fairly soon. I've heard that she hasn't recorded anything in years due to health problems, which is a real shame. Here's to hoping for some more wonderful music. :)
