Thanks for telling us. I've passed the word on to Simon (harlowpoet) who was up to see him a couple of weeks ago, and he'll be telling others around our part of the world where he'd been a frequent visitor.

Dave will be missed all right. A great man.

How like the world has become Mudcat. Around the world today, friends, met and unmet, will feel the sadness of the loss of one of us. Dave Bryant will be sorely missed here. Giok MacKenzie had just told me that I needed to drop Dave a line.

His voice will not be hard to find among those that loved him, and among those that knew him. My sincerest sympathies to his family and close friends.

God be good to him,

Mick

May I add my sincere sympathies too.   A lover of life who accepted the frailties of the body but not the spirit and fought right to the end by all accounts, and is held so dear by so many. My thoughts are with you Linda and all of the people who will miss his giant presence so deeply.

So sorry to hear this news.

I first heard "The Roman Gladiator" sung by Dave at the 2004 Euro-gathering in Barrow – a fun song sung with great gusto. Inspired by this performance, I've now included it in a musical sketch for Cubs and Brownies. When they perform it on stage, I'll be thinking of Dave.

I am grateful to Linda and Dave for sharing his last journey with us, here, at the Mudcat. I didn't know him, but it was obvious, by all accounts, he was held in high esteem and with great affection by those who knew him and that he was a remarkable singer, friend, and had a great sense of humour, too. It is to our great benefit, he was also a Mudcatter.

My deepest sympathy to Linda, family and all who knew him.

Didn't know him, never met, never corresponded, but still feel saddened at the loss of a regular and recognisable "name" here on Mudcat.
The community that is Mudcat creates that sense of belonging and camaraderie with complete strangers and genuine sadness at the loss of one of ours.
My sympathies to his family.

"I will miss him; he introduced me to "Fiddlers Green" way back when, and taught me how to sing in pubs and get free beer - but then he did have the most wonderful voice. God rest his soul".

Another person I met at my first Sidmouth 23 years ago, in the Middle Bar, like so many of my friends. I will console myself with the fact that I heard him still in such good voice so recently, and that he went relatively quickly. We are thinking of you Linda, and will raise a glass and pause for a thought this evening.

Like me, Dave suffered a stroke. I saw him at Miskin this year and met Lynda - I had lost use of my left hand and Dave had lost use of his right, and we joked that together, we could form a duo - both playing guitar!

What a lovely, sincere, booming-voiced man, boosted by his love of music. If ever you should need us, Lynda, just keep in touch.

I, too, have been dreading the appearance of this subject line.

I kept meaning to go to see him, but wimped out because, believe it or not, I couldn't think what I would say when I got there. Simon (Harlowpoet) made it, and he hasn't even got his own transport. The last time I spoke to him was on the 'phone from a Black Lion session just after he had his stroke. Another regret to add to my collection.

We will all miss him, his voice and his humour. Go in peace, old friend - the world is a poorer place for your passing.

Condolences to Linda and his family.

Oh dear I was so afraid that the end was near from what I'd heard, I was so worried I phoned him yesterday from the US but could only speak to Peter as Dave was being given antibiotics at the time. At least he knew I'd phoned and that makes me feel easier, I had planned to visit on my way back home from the US guess I'm going to be too late even for the wake, sing him a song from me.
Bon voyage Dave, I'm glad Linda got back in time to be with you, love too to Peter who went through it all with him.

I'm sorry he's gone, Linda. They make up legends about larger-than-life people like Dave, and I'm glad I got to meet him -and you- that summer night in London in 2002. He was funny, intelligent, a great musician, and just a good guy.

The night we sang together, there was a drunk who kept coming up to us, requesting songs and making a nuisance of himself. The drunk requested Beatles songs, and Dave sang this parody of "Yesterday." The dramatic moment of the evening was when the drunk wanted to try out Dave's guitar - and Dave let him do it, and then the drunk dropped it. Dave should have killed the guy, but he was very gracious about it. I think that showed his mettle.

And I really had a good time that evening.

May you treasure his memory, Linda.

Here's Avril's first post: Hello everyone, I've just joined Mudcat, Let me introduce myself.
I'm Avril Betts and I live in South East London. I started singing folk songs almost two years ago, although I've sung with a church choir since I was nine. I also sing regularly at various Karioci evenings. I sing most of my songs without accompaniment, although I've started using a bodran with some of them recently, and at some sessions various guitarists accompany me.

My songs always seem to go down well with the audience, but I keep getting told by club organisers that they can't fit me on the list or that I've got there too late. I often notice that a lot of the time, other singers, who are usually friends of the organiser, get there much later than me and still get a chance to sing. Is there a sort of mafia that runs in folk clubs and if so, how do you join? One of the clubs which I go to regularly has "featured spots" where one of the regular singers gets a chance to do a mini-booking, but every time I ask if I can do one, I get told that they might think about it in the future. How long do you have to be singing before you get accepted ?

And from there on it spiralled on into hilarity, as helpful Mudcatters rushed in to the rescue...

Back in '98 this place was just another place on the net and although we knew each other, the joint was pretty cold and dank, whatever ta' hell dank means. The great joy over the next few years was the growth in spirit of community and the love and friendships established here. But with that dose of reality came the accompanying dose of the hard truth.......and we had to take it all.

This place is as real as we allow it to be and for many of us the pain of loss for so many wonderful friends both met and unmet has been tough to deal with. I have weaned myself away in an effort to shield myself from the hurt but time seems to make no difference and the pain doesn't care. Dave made us better and his death lessens our community. And so was the case with the wise LR Mole and ornery Little John.......or of Mary Giac and her ribald good humor and Rick Fielding's passion for life.

We shall all miss you Dave and our best thoughts are of course with you Linda. So long Dave, it's been good ta' know ya'!.........and it really has!

Spaw

His personality and his voice accompanied by his battered tankard will be an everlasting memory. We admired and were inspired by his positive attitude towards his illness and the richness of his conversation in recent weeks. We will always remember Dave saying from his hospital bed 'I have had a wonderful life and I'm still having a wonderful life' the amazing thing about the man was that you knew he was telling the truth.

He will always be in my mind and my thoughts as one of the bravest men I've known. It has been my pleasure to have known him for quite a few years, and to think I'll never hear 'The Hash my Father scored' in quite the same way leaves me empty. My thoughts and condolences to you Linda, to Peter for the loss of his twin, and to his family. My song for you Dave:-

Bear where thou goest, the words of love,
Say all that words can say.
Changeless affection, strength to prove,
But speed upon the way.

Row on, row on, another day, May shine with brighter light
Ply, ply the oars and pull away, There's dawn beyond the night

What lovely tributes. We got the news this evening when, ringing Dave's phone to arrange a long overdue visit, and Peter answered.
Unfortunately for me, my friendship with Dave was a short but good one. Sue has known Dave for eighteen years so now.. over to Girl Friday.... Farewell mate, it's been good to know you. Without Dave, we probably would not have had the successful Folk Club that the Liberal Club in Orpington now has! He sang just for the beer in the old days when we met in the bar. When the bar as a venue became too noisy, Dave built us a p.a. system that included speaker stands made out of whirly clothes lines ! He was a great character and we shall all miss him greatly. His stoicism in the face of adversity was truly amazing. Lots of love to Peter, Linda, and all his family.

Sleep now, sleep an dso fade sorrow,
Sleep now, sleep and so fade sorrow,

A considerable performer, a real enthusiast for the music he loved, a devilish wit and sense of humour and one of the best "twinkles" in the eye of anyone I have ever met! :-) I for one am "very very glad he was a gladiator" right up to the end. I enjoyed meeting Dave at the Stony Stratford Gathering, and seeing him perform some extraordinary versions of well-known songs.

I have been deeply impressed by his courage and sheer gutsiness through all his illnesses. He will be greatly missed, and may I add my sympathy to Linda and to Dave's family in their sad loss.

Having spent valuable treasured time with Dave over the last month, and got to know him well, we will always remember his bravery and unselfishness in considering the feelings of others when he was so ill himself. He made our visits a happy event even in such sad circumstances and we shared lots of laughter as he reminisced so happily. He has been a great inspiration to us both which we will never forget.

God Bless you dear Dave. We will miss you and your wonderful voice and musicianship (but we will remember what you told us about your quart tankard which we will watch with interest at your wake)!

I am so glad that I met Dave when he was at the peak of his powers, and have the video to prove it. He brought the house down at the Barrow Eurogathering last year, and his involvement made the event the very special occasion it became.

The stroke may have jiggered his guitar arm, but the essence of the man seemed to have become concentrated when I met him at Khatt and Micca's wedding. Maybe he knew then that he was on the home straight, which endorses the strength of the man, as he showed nothing but the joie de vivre that he maintained to his end.

I'm very sorry to hear about Dave. I must have first heard him somewhere at a London festival, and the sheer volume of his voice blew me apart. His contribution to the London folk scene over the years has been immense.

We were later to renew our acquaintance in the first years of the Thomas Clark Quire when they were top heavy on basses and sparse on tenors. Quite honestly, with Dave on board, there was no need for any extra tenors.

The south-east will be a quieter place without him. My condolences to all his nearest and dearest.

I started this thread,at Linda's request, on Saturday just after Dave died.I was not able to get my thoughts together, so hope you will forgive me for visiting the thread for the second time.
Reading all the wonderful messages above brings home what a truly incredable man Dave was.Not just a folkie, he sang in choirs, opera, and was a promenader at the Albert Hall every year.He inspired so many to stand up and sing(including me)introduced us to folk music, The National Opera and Indian food, but his sense of humour compelled him to tell the novice that a madras curry was a very mild dish!
In the past weeks he said he had a wonderful life and was content, then he told me that this August he sang "The leaf" at Sidmouth , middle bar , for the memory of Cyril Tawney.he said he hoped next year it would be sung for him.He was insperational and so very brave.
My thoughts and prayers go to Linda, Peter and Medae, his daughter ,and Julien, his son.He was a wonderful friend and Bill and I will miss him.
Wendy

Very sad news...although expected it seems too soon. He was so much part of the South London Folk scene and one of the first people I remember when I first moved up to the smoke and although many years passed since meeting him again at The Good Intent in Rochester he hadn't changed a bit. He will be remembered with fondness by many.

Although new to this site, I've spent a lot of time today reading posts about and from Mr. Bryant. I have been sitting here at my work computer laughing and crying in turns- mostly laughing.

I send my deepest condolences to Linda, Peter and all who loved and were connected with such a dear funny, talented and lively man. The world needs more like him and I am very, very sorry to have missed a chance to meet this force of nature.

Funeral Blues
W.H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Billybob,

The word is out to the Middle Bar Singers. Kitty passed it on in the Middle Bar message site.

I think ifn this is what you refered to nothing could be more appropriate:-

WHAT'S THE LIFE OF A MAN

As I was a walking one morning at ease
A viewing the leaves as they fell from the trees
All in slow motion appearing to be
And those that had withered, they fell from the trees

What's the life of a man anymore than the leaves
A man has his season, so why should we grieve
Though all thru this life, we appear fine and gay
Like the leaves we will wither and soon fade away

If you'd seen the leaves just a few days ago
So beautiful and bright they all seemed to grow
A frost came upon them and withered them all
A storm came upon them and down they did fall

If you look in the churchyard, there you will see
Those that have passed like the leaves from the trees
When age and affliction upon us do fall
Like the leaves we must wither and down we must fall

Dave Earl

Have just gone online after a few days off to hear this sad news. What can we say? Dave was larger than life. Over 30 years of memories flood back, from the Coach House Farningham through Foxton Canal weekends, Canalway festivals, to the last time we heard him sing - at our 20th Wedding Anniversay bash in April.

Dave, you were unforgettable while you were here and we will certainly never forget you.

Linda, our hearts go out to you at this extremely difficult time. Know that your man was well loved and appreciated for all that he was (witness the number of posts on this thread already).
With Love, Dave & Eileen.

This is very sad news. Dave was one of the very first people I knew in the folk scene, 35 years ago. He often turned up in random pubs in South London and played and sang, trying to stimulate interest. He and his singing partner Wendy did a spot at my Brother's Jazz session at Chislehurst, then I often bumped into him at clubs, notably the Bull at Farningham, run by the Crayfolk, and for several years at Dave Coopers club at Catford, where he would announce his entrance by joining in the current chorus in full operatic volume. He was later spotted playing melodeon for Woddard Morris from Farningham. Later , whilst living in Leicester, I encountered him running canal side folk weekends, and hosting the downstairs song session at the EFDSS annual meetings in London. I hadn't seen him for a long time until he re-emerged at Sidmouth last year, and was saddened to see his deterioration this year.
The Tudor barn will make a fitting venue for a wake, they have made the Downstairs a pub, with some decent ale.
He was always an eccentric character, but mainly a great enthusiast who would sing anywhere at the drop of a hat, and I am sure that it is his enthusiasm that touched so many, and for which he will be remembered. Jeff

Middle Bar people will have seen this from Tony Day but in case TD doesn't look in I have pasted his words.

"I will never forget the year Dave had a boat at Sidmouth (not sure how he got it there, or whether it was his, or one he had acquired for the week). It was an open clinker built boat of about fifteen feet, if I remember correctly.

In those days the pubs shut for the afternoon, of course (hence the origin of the twice daily Middle Bar sessions) and one afternoon Dave invited me to go out on the boat with him. There were various jokes about the perils of the deep, invading France, etc. - and I'd be very surprised if we didn't have some emergency liquid supplies with us.

We pushed the boat down the shingle up by Port Royal, got in and waited to float off. Which we did not do. The bung was missing from the hole in the bilge and we just grounded a yard or two off shore with damp ankles....

I don't think Dave wrote a song about it and I know I didn't.

Tony"

I hope Tony doesn't mind.

Dave Earl

Dave + boats = hilarity, I already told the story of towing Daves boat when the wheel fell off on the thread that recently closed.
At the Walton Festival a few years ago, Dave had the last laugh when he arrived at the campsite towing boat to use as a caravan! We have a great photo of all the tents under water and a duck waddling up Daves gang plank. You could not make it up!!

By the way Jeff , that was me at Chislehurst, I had forgotten.

I first met Dave at the Rising Sun in Catford south london

What kind of voice is that?

Loud, f...... , loud.

We trawled the scene and he would drag me into various pubs and immediatly make his presence known as he launched into song.

then the pints rolled in.

He boasted of never having any complaints ! cept in those days he dragged out Fiddlers Green and played the guitar

Glad I got him and Linda to come to the Silver cup and later to the spotlight, it had been many years.

His departure was more sudden than I anticipated.

A generous man, who loved life.

Bye Dave, you sure made an impact and left lasting impressions

The wake will take place on Saturday 14th January at the Tudor Barn Eltham. Probably starting about 1pm with a few hymns and sacred music that Dave has requested. There will also be close friends and family reading some pieces about Dave's life. He has written it all down as those who have visited will know. He says 'this bit shouldn't take more than an hour', but knowing many of the stories Dave has inspired this may go on a bit longer. Interruptions, laughter and toasts are all acceptable. Barry Laing of Skinners Rats is taking on the role of MC, so anyone who would like to perform, please contact him and he will sort out a programme. His phone number is 020 8303 6882. There will be a raffle and collection for Charities including the EFDSS, RNLI & IWA. We would like to have the buffet American Supper style, as we have only a rough idea of numbers (But expect lots) I will look after that side (with assistance).
If anyone wants a bed for the night bI have plenty of floor space and the caravan (2 comfortable, 3 friendly) Jude do you want to book it again?
I'll keep you informed, and thanks again for your wonderful messages and sympathy

Just looked in on Mudcat a few days ago, for the first time in a month or so. Was planning to check the thread below the line to see how Dave was getting on... [sigh] As many have said, I knew this would be happening, but was hoping it wouldn't be quite so soon. It's taken a couple of days before I felt ready to respond here...

I first met Dave (and Linda) at the 04 Eurogather in Barrow/Hull. They did indeed make a big impression with their singing and their sense of fun. What I will also remember is their generosity -- they were kind enough to let me spend a couple of days with them just a month or two later; fed and watered me well, helped me get back & forth to London from their place, and brought me with them to the folk club at the Tudor Barn for a most enjoyable evening.

From my own experience(s) of Dave (as well as what emerges from reading this thread), the big thing about him was not just his enjoyment of music, mischief, and life in general -- but his desire to share these pleasures with anyone and everyone. He posessed
a real generosity of spirit -- the world could use a few more like that, and is a sadder -- and quieter -- place for his passing.

Thinking of you, Linda. The most difficult thing about sharing your life with Dave must be losing him. My heart goes out to you.

Will be there of course!

Am sure this will be a fitting way for us to remember and sing farewell to Dave. During our visit it was obvious that he had put a lot of his heart into planning his wake and this will be just one of my abiding memories of him.

It's maybe an hours drive from here (Leatherhead) but basic space available & lift to & from. Just PM..

Positive thoughts, love & hugs to Linda & Family.

I'll be thinking of Dave on Friday.

Maybe it's too soon to ask, or maybe I overlooked the info, but are there (commercially available) recordings of Dave's singing? I'd like to have both his voice and the kind of songs I heard him sing at Hull to listen to again. (I'm still looking forward to the promised film of the Hull gathering, which ought to feature Dave and Linda, among others - but that belongs in another thread.)

I will be there. I did also think of ringing to book a spot and then I thought - like Richard said - that there are others with a far better claim. But they may be reticent about coming forward. Linda, an idea might be that you should make a list of performers you think Dave would like to have at his wake, and then contact them directly.

George, Dave has already asked some poeple to sing specific songs, but otherwise he liked to hear all good performers, and he would certainly like to have you included. Apart from singers we are hoping to have a large scratch band - Manitas take heed!!
Suzanne, ther aren't any commercial CD's of Dave although he does feature on some very old tapes. We are going to try to transfer as many of these as possible onto CD, and if they turn out OK we will copy them for whoever wants them.

I'm so sorry Linda. I didn't really know Dave at all, just enjoyed his posts. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
