Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Musket Date: 06 Mar 16 - 06:12 AM Dear me, the cost of banjologists is creeping up. Many years ago when I booked Arizona Smoke Review, Bill Zorn only charged me our spare bed for the night and my ex wife's recipe for perfect mushy peas. Mind you, Paul Downes and Phil Beer cost the rest of the profits on the night... You don't have to wait till the summer Gerry. They take snow ploughs over Keadby Bridge, tha' knows. Keep challenging us to come over to The Malt Shovel and one day, I'll convince the rookery to be chauffeur. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Banjo-Flower Date: 06 Mar 16 - 09:44 AM Next Malt Shovel session 20th March 2016 8pm onwards now wriggle out of that Gerry |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 23 Mar 16 - 07:54 PM Sorry Gerry. I did wriggle. To be honest, I bloody forgot.. I even told Mrs Musket I was going out. She reminded me at 11.00pm Grr. Seriously, I will come over. Keep bugging me. And vice versa. I'm sure we would love to hear more banjos....... 😇 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 24 Mar 16 - 04:59 AM Belton delivered what you might call a quiet night last night. Understatement being my speciality. ☹️ |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Banjo-Flower Date: 24 Mar 16 - 07:01 PM So who else turned up ? reminder to myself, must make the effort to visit Belton when the lighter nights are here even though I prefer sessions to clubs Gerry |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,3 chord jim Date: 27 Mar 16 - 09:33 AM Sorry I will not be at Red Lion this Wednesday got a case of man flu |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Musket Date: 03 Apr 16 - 01:01 AM Not a bad night last week. The Red Lion is a decent venue for sitting round and knocking out songs. Our motley crew were; Danny, The Rookery, Richard, Backwoodsman, Jill, The Late (but turned up early for once) Ian, Jonathan, Mick, Andy and Goff. Your truly as ever bringing up the rear. Apologies had been given from Jim (see above), Albert, Martin Carthy and Elvis. Not much to add really. What else can I tell you? Oh aye. I enjoyed a couple of faggots yesterday. I would have shared that snippet elsewhere but you know how it is these days. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 Apr 16 - 01:41 AM We used to call 'em 'savoury ducks' (US-ians please note the correct spelling of 'savoury'). 'Faggots' seems to be a southern-softie word for them, sithee maister! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,3 chord jim Date: 04 Apr 16 - 09:25 AM still layed up with man flu no playing out this week |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 06 Apr 16 - 06:37 AM Wheatsheaf tonight boys and girls! Do come and make some noise! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,3 chord jim Date: 18 Apr 16 - 03:31 PM still stuck in house for another week no playing out this Wed. |

Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 26 Apr 16 - 03:08 AM T'Red Lion tomorrow boys and girls; It's getting busy these days so get there early to save a seat. Save me one please! Ten of us last week at the Wheatsheaf, so looking up there too! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 26 Apr 16 - 03:15 AM Steve at The Epworth Tap is starting what he hopes will be a monthly folk night and invited us to attend. First one is on Sunday 15th May- opening at 6pm. Lets do it! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 28 Apr 16 - 04:14 AM Another excellent, convivial and well attended night at The Red Lion, with 15 performers squeezed in to the room and all apparently having a good time! We got all sorts of music and the last hour was all about joining in! Brilliant. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 01 Jun 16 - 07:00 PM I apologise for the lack of updates on here, no excuses, but a simple summary- we have had an excellent few weeks with very good numbers at both The Red Lion and The Wheatsheaf! Next week back at the Red Lion and with an extra folk night at Epworth Tap on 12th June. We will also be at Epworth Music Day on 18th June at the Red Lion from around 12noon to whenever! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke in Groucho mask Date: 02 Jun 16 - 03:06 AM Mmm.. Not embracing this Mudcat lark these days, a rather unmistakeable odour permeates across the pond. However, back here in the real world.. A smaller than normal band of balladeers, banjologists and banter in The Wheatsheaf last night but quality over quantity of course.... Note the rookerie's posts regarding The Epworth Music Day, including an acoustic session all afternoon and a folky diddly doo session at the same time as well as concerts all day all over the place. (Yours truly seems to be doing one spot in a car park. I hope they remove the red jelly babies for me.) Some cracking singers nights and sessions going around locally these days and our two are only part of the picture. All good stuff. Don't forget, we are only two hours from London via Kings Cross to Doncaster then Dave's Taxi, tell him Ian sent you. Alternatively, the VIP terminal at Sandtoft International Airport does a rather nice champagne whilst awaiting carriages. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 09 Jun 16 - 04:25 AM A very well attended night yesterday at The Red Lion. Noisy till about 9.15 then much better. Most of the regulars were there and Bob Chiswick, Dave Mitchell, and Trevor Scarrow gave us a bit of variety. Gary and Reg featured Jess as their new vocalist on a couple of numbers! We are looking to move into the wine bar to accommodate the numbers for future nights! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 21 Jun 16 - 02:13 PM Just in case anybody reads this- we had a great day at the Red Lion on Epworth Music Day on Saturday 18th June , and hopefully will have another good singaround tomorrow, 22nd June, at the same venue. We have moved across to the Wine Bar in the same pub as we were getting so popular we've outgrown the "Library" room. Come and join the gang - we have room for spectators now! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke in Groucho mask Date: 22 Jun 16 - 05:44 AM Playing in a wine bar eh? From the depths of pork scratchings to the giddy heights of amuse bouche. Still get to hear the odd banjo though, I'll bet. Anyway, to celebrate the fifteen yard move, we have free beer, each table gets a complimentary bottle of Chateau Reynella '86 and a chance to win a baritone ukulele in the two for one raffle. All thanks to Father Ted whose funding of the evening is resting in his account. (Mind you, I notice another "trustee" left for the south of France at the weekend.) Lots of good music, lots of opportunity to add your music to the evening and lots of pork scratchings anyway. Tonight! Wednesday! Epworth! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Squeezebox John Date: 25 Jul 16 - 04:44 PM Just reporting back from the south of France, the weather was lovely.I struggled with the lingo though, the only French I could remember was Mademoiselle from Armentieres, parlez vous?, and that didn't get me very far, just a few black looks. Heard some nice music though, does anyone at the club know "Champs Elysees" by Joe Dassin? Francoise Hardy promised me she would bring her guitar to the next Ep'th Folk, she said she might bring Carla Bruni along too if she can spare the time. When is the next club night so I can let her know? I hope I am not busy combining! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 02 Aug 16 - 11:21 AM After my couple of weeks in Brittany, I return to find that the Wheatsheaf has changed hands and last weeks folk club was cancelled, though apparently the previous one was a success. Anyway- tomorrow night we will be as normal in the Red Lion (in Jinxy's wine bar) I hope to see you all there! I will! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 31 Aug 16 - 07:43 PM Tonights Red Lion Club was a great success! 20 players and nearly the same observers! Ages 15-75! If you missed it shame on you! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,For it is he... Date: 01 Sep 16 - 03:30 AM If that was Carla Bruni last night, she's let herself go a bit... Rather stonking again. Other than photoshopped photos being handed out (you will be hearing from Rookem Screwem & Scarper accordingly,) we had a corker. Far too many to name, let alone some of the permutations although a special note for Dave, whose fiddle accompaniment to many of us raised the game somewhat. No wonder people were coming in from the main bar to have a listen... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 01 Sep 16 - 08:24 AM Sorry I missed - out Tuesday, out Thursday, so needed a quiet night in with The Memsahib. Thoroughly enjoyed the last Red Lion night, and hoping to make the next one on 14/9. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,For it is he II Date: 02 Sep 16 - 07:52 AM Always good to see you. It's Donny Roots next Monday, if you're free. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 02 Sep 16 - 12:12 PM The Memsahib's away, so can't get there on Monday. 😳 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,For it is he III Date: 03 Sep 16 - 04:34 AM Ah well.. You could always smuggle your four legged family member upstairs. Wendy will be behind the bar and not notice?? I know lots of songs to serenade doggies with. My little fellah was always the first critical audience for my output. I judged the song by the degree of indifference. (He was a greyhound) or the toxic qualities of the fart (he was a greyhound.) |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 Sep 16 - 05:29 AM If he was the kind of dog who'd lie quietly snoozing under the table, I'd be only too happy to smuggle him in - unfortunately he thinks he's everyone's bestest buddy, and everyone wants to play with him, all the time! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 07 Sep 16 - 11:52 AM It's the Wheatsheaf tonight! Nobody turned up last time except Jim T, I was in Whitby but where were the rest of you! (I know Ian was sleeping it off after a couple of days in Whitby) |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke in Musket mask Date: 08 Sep 16 - 03:45 AM True. There again I was within quarter of a mile of the place, albeit cuddling my teddy bear and having sweet dreams. Not bad last night. Contributions from both Jims, Eric, almost Nigel, Richard, the rookery and yours truly. Mike came but failed to perform as it were. My responsible adult got curious over where I go when I sneak out on a Wednesday and followed me. Mmm.. Perhaps shaming me into varnishing those sills might have an effect? Yeah, never going to happen now. Onwards and downwards. Red Lion (Jinxies) next week. Be there so you can tell your grandkids all about it. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 08 Sep 16 - 08:46 AM Working on it. Might even bring a new song with me.... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Sep 16 - 04:23 PM Red Lion this Wednesday? |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke in Gr.. Musket Date: 13 Sep 16 - 03:25 AM Yep. Red Lion /Jinxies Wine Bar this Wednesday. For anyone else reading, as I may have mentioned before, we are only two hours from the centre of London.* You can also fly direct into Sandtoft International Airport and book a limo to take you to the stadium c/w access all areas pass card. There, you can hear a wide interpretation of folk, acoustic roots and the (rather) odd banjo, but don't let the latter put you off. You may also hear, it seems, Backwoodsman's new song, Musket's old song and you can put beer on the rookerie's tab. * Train from Kings Cross to Doncaster, then ring Dave's Taxis of Belton. Tell him to put it on the rookerie's tab. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 Sep 16 - 08:33 AM Thanks, Mus...errrrmm, Bloke. The new song (or, to be accurate, my version of a Dave Wilson song), after considerable rehearsive effort on my part, is reaching a point in its development where I think I dare attempt it without my electronic crutch. Jim C will no doubt be glad about that. 😜😄😎 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke etc Date: 13 Sep 16 - 01:06 PM As we have a "stage" of sorts, it'll only startle the horses if you use an electronic crotch in front of we rather reserved Islers. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 Sep 16 - 01:36 PM Crutch, Bloke, not crotch! Daft bugger! 😎😄 I have another new song, of which I'm a co-composer, but it's very new and needs more rehearsal, so I doubt I'll inflict that one on the assembled multitude. 😜 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke letting Groucho mask slip Date: 15 Sep 16 - 02:44 AM And a grand night it was. Backwoodsman did indeed perform as per contract and was joined in a star studded night by a motley crew of superstars and distinguished hall of fame alumni. The highlight for me was the rookery admonishing an artisan guitar luthier for supplying guitars with cheap strings, (playing a new guitar made by him) saying he had instantly changed them for quality strings and proceeding to break one whilst tuning up. No need for satire in this thread, reality caters for all comments. In the best of folk tradition, we had a wonderful two guitars and fiddle rendition of "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Ian, Johnathan and Dave. If indeed, fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go round, it occurred to me that Doncaster needs recognition for its contribution to astro physics. Onwards and downwards. Next Wednesday, after the stadium quality of Jinxies @ The Red Lion, our tour continues at The Wheatsheaf in Belton for the more intimate theatre gig experience then repeat the tour ad neauseum. Your humble reviewer might get off me sorry arse and pop down to Ferry Folk tonight. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 15 Sep 16 - 03:09 AM Aye, it were raight good. 👍 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke doing Musket impressions Date: 28 Sep 16 - 10:00 AM Anyroad... Tonight, for your fontiferous malgamatamations, your worstitude in Leonard Sachs impersonations and a bloody good night out.... Jinxies Wine Bar @ Red Lion, Epworth. It's Ep'th Folk!!!!!! (Cue Kermit waving his hands) Tonight should be good. It's the last gig for the rookery for a month or so, as he is about to start his tour down under, starting in Tasmania and ending in err Tasmania. Anyway, he has offered not one but two Northwood guitars for the raffle to make space for his increasing stock of Yamaha guitars. Be there so you can tell your grandkids you really were there, as opposed to more people claiming they were at Live Aid than could actually fit in Wembley. I should know cos I was there. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 28 Sep 16 - 11:12 AM Lottery tickets for the Northwood guitars are a bargain at £3000 each! Every entrant gets a free Alvarez Baritone guitar! See you all later, even Groucho! (who gave him that name????) |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Baritone playing bloke Date: 28 Sep 16 - 01:11 PM At least let me sing "Leap Up And Down With Your Knickers In The Air" before relieving me of my musical appendage. I've got a bloke asking if they can supply the security detail for the gig. They managed to get the Labour conference by feeding backhanders to Corbyn's principled mates so I might be able to afford a raffle ticket after all. Good job the beer is free. (I pity your slate when you get back from Van Diemens Land Mr Rookery. I'll have to make myself scarce for a while.) |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Bloke in two minds and a gun Date: 30 Sep 16 - 03:22 AM Ah, rate. A good time that was had by all. But anyway, I'm here to talk about Ep'th Folk, not that. We had another corker. Since moving down the corridor, past the gents and into Jinxies Wine Bar, the club seems to be going from strength to strength. Having a stage area helps make it more of an occasion and we get more and more people coming to listen rather than just singers. No entry fee helps too... We had, in no particular order and I'm bound to miss one or two. (When I got there I told Reg that Richard and Albert were on holiday, just as both walked in.) Reg & Gaz, Goff, Danny, Jim, Albert, Chris, Richard, Mike, Ian MkII, Jill, Pip & Colin, Andy, The Rookery and yours truly. Those who wished it had a cracking fiddle accompaniment by Dave. I was sad enough to count and overall, we had a dozen people there for the noise it makes. No Wheatsheaf next week, as most of the regulars there are on hols, and I'm down in "the smoke" and won't be back till late. So, a week on Wednesday, back to Jinxies. Join us, I wasn't joking when I said we can put drinks on the Rookery's tab whilst he is chasing kangaroos next month. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 09 Oct 16 - 04:04 PM So sad I won't be there! Either to open my tab or to pay it! On the other hand I do have £89.60 of club money with me down under..............where it is currently blowing a gale and pxxxing down with rain! Have a good week! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 09 Oct 16 - 04:38 PM Beautiful day here in Detbyshire! The Memsahib's travel plans have kyboshed any hope of my going out to play at either Ep'th FC venue for the next few weeks. Hope to see you......eventually! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Some bloke or other Date: 10 Oct 16 - 03:12 AM 'Tis a pity young sir. If Mondays fit in with your memsahib's plans, then don't forget it's Donny Strummers tonight. The bad news is that Bob Chiswick will be late, the sad news is that he asked yours truly to run it till he gets there. Raining in Van Diemens Land eh? We know a song about that, don't we children? Thanks to seventeen million disturbed xenophobes, your £89.60 won't get as many pie floaters as you thought..,, Sorry, OUR £89.60. I'm still waiting for the party. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 10 Oct 16 - 04:27 AM Sorry Bloke, Derbyshire all this week. But I've got the Lowden here with me, so I'm getting some badly-needed practice one! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 28 Nov 16 - 04:56 AM After a few weeks absence, through holidays in Oz and being spammed by Mudcat, I can reveal what most of our readers already know that Epworth Folk Club is now Every Wednesday at Jinxies Wine Bar in The Red Lion, Market Square , Epworth. Do join us- we seem to have a good night every week with 10-20 people of all ages and standards and styles! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 15 Dec 16 - 02:00 PM If anyone out there still reads this- Epworth Folk Club is still thriving every Wednesday at The Red Lion, Market Square, Epworth, where we attracted 19 performers and a few spectators last night. It was excellent!Any acoustic instrument or singers welcome! |
