Without comment:

Terrorist Sparrow

'The Dutch animal protection agency said Tuesday it is investigating the shooting death of a sparrow that knocked over 23,000 dominoes during an attempt to set a world record.

'The ill-fated bird flew into an exposition center, threatening to derail a world record Monday, before it was chased into a corner and shot by an exterminator with an air rifle.

'The bird was a common house sparrow - a species placed on the national endangered list last year.

'"Under Dutch law, you need a permit to kill this kind of bird, and a permit can only be granted when there's a danger to public health or a crop," agency spokesman Niels Dorland said.

'"That was not the case. I might add, is it really necessary to kill a bird that knocked over a few dominoes for a game?"'

Well yes it was probably not necessry to shoot the sparrow but aren't there greater problems in this world that we should be worrying about?

It reminds me of the owl that lived in a tree in the town square of a Flemish town and got shot by a police marksman a year or two ago, for hooting at night, after complaints by the residents.

The irony of it is that they then erected a statue of it in its memory in the square.

Strange world (...particularly Belgium. Don't hoot at night in Flanders whatever you do.)

Peace

I'll remember that tomorrow then.... no hooting. Is it alright if I squeak?

We had to 'dispose' of a pigeon that got into our church once - bird poop being acidic it would have damaged the altar hangings or the paintings had it landed.... Someone was called in to shoot it with an air rifle. They missed and broke a piece of mediaeval stained glass window! The pigeon later walked out of the vestry door of its own accord.

Hi Liz,

So far, I am assured that squeaking is not a capital offence yet in Belgium so you should be fine!

Should you accidentally hoot, you will get a statue of yourself erected, not that that is any consolation!

Peace

Richard

If they are endangered, why are they called the COMMON sparrow?

We should worry about the mental peace of the uncommon domino stacker.

Millions of sparrows here in NZ. Common English ones.

Just goes to show our attitude to living things. If it's an inconvenience, dispose of it.

Commonly called the thin end of the wedge.
