Subject: Lyr Add: CHILDREN OF DARKNESS (Richard Farina) From: khandu Date: 21 Nov 05 - 08:14 PM Children Of Darkness (Sang by Joan Baez) (words by Richard Farina) Oh, now is the time for your loving, dear, And the time for your company Now when the light of reason fails And fires burn on the sea Oh, now in this age of confusion I have need for your company. For I am a wild and a lonely child And the son of an angry man Now with the high wars raging I would offer you my hand For we are the children of darkness And the prey of a proud, proud land. It's once I was free to go roaming in The wind of the springtime mind And once the clouds I sailed upon Were sweet as lilac wine Oh, why are the breezes of summer, dear Enlaced with a grim design? So, now is the time for your loving, dear, And the time for your company Now when the light of reason fails And fires burn on the sea Oh, now in this age of confusion I have need for your company. .................................... |

Subject: RE: Req: The Loving Times/Children of Darkness From: Midchuck Date: 22 Nov 05 - 08:02 AM Funny, I just sang that at the local song circle last Wednesday. Everyone was pulling up old Vietnam-era "stop the war" songs. I can't imagine why. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Req: The Loving Times/Children of Darkness From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Nov 05 - 08:37 PM I was also fascinated with this dark and brooding song back in the 1970's. But I also noticed a reference to "lilac wine" in the song and thought to myself, "I bet this would be interesting to drink!" Now I grew up on a farm and did know how to make dandelion wine and it seemed to me one could follow the old family recipe and come up with something really special. Well, we harvested a bunch of nice fresh lilac blossoms, mixed them up with raisons and sugar, boiled it up, and poured it into a 5-gallon jug with an air trap and let it bubble away for a month or two. Then we bottled it and let it age. After a year or so we drew the cork of one bottle and I never smelled anything so vile. We poured the rest of it down the drain. The moral of this sad story is never trust a contemporary folk singer for advice on what should go into making a good wine. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: GUEST,Guest: Alan Davis Date: 02 Oct 10 - 09:01 PM I heard this song many, many years ago---that is, I heard one line sung by a traveller staying overnight at our home: "I have need of your company." It's stuck with me for over 40 years, couldn't get it out of my head if I wanted to. So now I made up some chords, and some cheesy lyrics, only to discover that the song is called "Children of Darkness" and has some of the ass-kickinest lyrics around. Not only that, I owned the album in years gone by, and never paid any nevermind to it. So, now I've discovered at least two different versions of chords, and at least one variant of the lyrics, what are the chords? I know that Richard and Mimi (i just read it) didn't write music. There was a song book, out of print, available nowhere. The "Richard Farina Dulcimer Book" is available online, but no chords are given for this song: maybe I'll have to reverse engineer the chords, but studying the dulcimer? Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: GUEST Date: 25 Aug 12 - 06:45 AM Here's the full lyrics from the original recording - Now is the time for your loving, dear, And the time for your company Now when the light of reason fails And fires burn on the sea Now in this age of confusion I have need for your company. For I am a wild and a lonely child And the son of an angry land Now with the high wars raging I would offer you my hand For we are the children of darkness And the prey of a foul command It's once I was free to go roaming in The wind of the springtime mind It's once the clouds I sailed upon Were sweet as lilac wine So why are the breezes of summer, dear Enlaced with a grim design? And where was the will of my father when We raised our swords on high? And where was my mother's wailing when Our flags were justified? And where will we take our pleasures when Our bodies have been denied? Now is the time for your loving, dear, And the time for your company Now when the light of reason fails And fires burn on the sea Now in this age of confusion I have need for your company |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: GUEST Date: 25 Aug 12 - 06:51 AM Opps - that should read "Been laced with a grim design." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: GUEST Date: 25 Aug 12 - 06:54 AM Oh...and "pleasures" should be "pleasure", singular (guess I didn't edit quite enough after catching the major errors). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Aug 12 - 07:20 AM Here's are two recipes for "lilac wine". Don't know if they work, but they must work better than Charley's, or no one would have had the nerve to put them online. (Perhaps the trouble might have been something to do with some failure in sterilising the jug rather than the lilac blossoms?) |

Subject: ADD: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina)^^^ From: Taconicus Date: 02 Feb 13 - 01:13 PM Here are the lyrics for Children of Darkness as sung by Mimi and Richard Farina on their 1965 album Reflections in a Crystal Wind: CHILDREN OF DARKNESS The original chords as sung by Mimi and Richard seem to be D#,G#,C#,A#. So stick your capo on the first fret (a favorite place for me to put mine when I'm singing folk music) and try it like this: {D}Now is the time for your {G}loving, {D}dear, And the time for your {C}compa{D}ny Now when the light of reason fails And {C}fires burn on the {A}sea {D}Now in this age of con{G}fusion {D} I Have need for your {C}compa{D}ny. And here are the lyrics as sung by Joan Baez (Mimi Fariña's sister) on her 1967 album "Joan" (musical arrangement by Peter Schickele), dedicated to Richard Fariña, who had recently died in a motorcycle accident: Oh, now is the time for your loving, dear, Recording from The Complete Vanguard Recordings: (**I verified the lyrics posted above with this recording. The Digital Tradition has "son of an angry man" and "We raised our swords on high" - I don't think either is correct. -Joe Offer-) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: Taconicus Date: 03 Mar 13 - 03:29 PM Here I am singing "Children of Darkness" last night at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild in Kingston, NY. I tried to do something a little different here: When Richard and Mimi sang this, Mimi was the principal singer, with Richard singing harmony. Here I'm singing the harmony part that Richard sang, which I think makes a nice melody on its own. At the beginning I'm talking about Friday night when Pete Seeger spoke to me for the first time. I'm not very happy with the musical quality of this rendition. I was so busy remembering the words as I sang that I wasn't concentrating on the singing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78YJWo-6EcA |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Children of Darkness (Richard Farina) From: Joe Offer Date: 17 May 20 - 12:00 AM Is this a traditional tune that Richard Farina used for his lyrics? |
