Subject: Good News From Detroit
From: GUEST,Matt Watroba
Date: 07 Dec 05 - 08:30 AM

After a little over one year of being away from WDET in Detroit I am happy, proud, and quite frankly, astonished that they have asked me and the Folks Like Us program back to the airwaves. Under new management, the station has decided to restore both the folk and the bluegrass shows on Saturday afternoons. They told me they wanted the show to be "exactly like you successfully produced it for 18 years." Wow. Thanks to everyone on this amazing site for all the support last year when the show was let go. It truly was the persistence of thousands of devoted listeners who withheld support and kept the letters and e-mails coming that made the difference. Roots music lives!!

As far as I know the show will stream live at www.wdetfm.org. I will update the forum when I know the exact time of the show. It will be on Saturdays. First show will be December 17.

Hey Matt!
This Detroiter couldn't be happier! I was just saying yesterday how lousy Detroit radio had become. My Saturdays will feel normal again. Welcome back!

That's good news, Matt. Heck, you're almost legendary!

Can I make a request for your return-to-the-air show? How about playing your recording of Jerry Rasmussen's "Handful of Songs" from your Live at the Ark CD?

Best of luck to you!

So what ever happened to Phil Marcus Esser? He still around; passed on? How about Marc Chover - a bass player who turned down Gordon Lightfoot in the late sixties because he was headed to stardom with his new rock band called "Southboud Freeway." Anyone remember SBF?
Then there's Michael Smith, but I know where he's at, well...you know.
He did live in Detroit for awhile in the seventies, though. Gee, this is going farther back than I need to travel. Next thing you know I'll be asking about the Rationals and Frost. Man,...gotta go.

Matt, I had to relocate to South Jersey, so it has been a while since I have been in touch. I am as happy as I can be to hear this and will put WDET back on my contribution list. Could you provide an email address for the Program Director. I sent a whole series of angry emails over the cancellation and want to send congratulatory ones now.

Do you need CD's? My offer still stands.

All the best,

Mick Lane

Just because it's eventually going to disappear...
From www.wdetfm.org/:

"Folks Like Us" and "Arkansas Traveler" Coming Back To WDET!
WDET is excited to announce the return of two of Detroit Public Radio's heritage music hosts - Matt Watroba and Larry McDaniel! Both programs will be part of the WDET weekend schedule by the end of the year - stay tuned for specific program information!

Matt Watroba, host of "Folks Like Us" and Larry McDaniel, host of "Arkansas Traveler" return to the WDET airwaves after a 15-month absence. Both programs had a tremendously loyal audience and both hosts are confident their listeners will be tuning in once again to their programs.

"We're going to bring back all the listeners,"said a jubilant McDaniel about returning to WDET. "But mostly, I want to get the music back out there, and I want to let everybody know that the boys are back in town!"

Michael Coleman, WDET's General Manager, couldn't be happier about these legendary, one-of-a-kind music programs coming back to WDET. "I think public radio should provide alternative voices, and I believe Matt and Larry fit that bill. Having folk and bluegrass music on WDET is my idea of music variety and I know our listeners will be thrilled to hear these programs on WDET again."

Mick, there's a "Contact Us" link on the web page with a few addresses.

There are also "Listen Live" links, with a choice of formats. I didn't get involved in the letter-writing campaign, but I hope to tune in to Matt's first show. They can tell how many people connect by internet.

Wow, Bob Coltman and Matt Watrboa in one year.

Now if I could only find out where Jerry Rau is..

An article about the shake-up at WDET.

A little background on this - IIRC (and maybe I don't), Matt Watroba was fired by either Martin Bandyke or Judy Adams, who were the weekday and morning hosts respectively.

Matt was fired, along with the other hosts, WITHOUT a chance to say goodbye to the listeners - he was told midweek that his show was cancelled immediately.

Seems like its going to be a fight for control.

Freep article

That's great Matt! Perhaps you can let me know if you still have our 3 banjo CD'S and Erynn Marshall's CD, and if not if you'd like me to send them. Details on our record label site www.merriweather.ca - look in the banjo / old time music tab.
Thanks and best of luck!

I just discovered this forum, and would like to share with everyone some very good news about WDET itself.   Like many of you, I had been completely offended by the recorded phone message and the automated e mail responses when I contacted WDET to protest about Matt and Larry's dismissal last year. And I let the station know in no uncertain terms that they could no longer look to me for any financial support.   I'm delighted to report that, beyond restoring Matt and Larry's programs, the new management has taken the time to post on the front page of the WDET website a frank and comprehensive letter about all of the new changes, with an invitation to send in feedback. I'd been so vocal about my past disapproval that, in fairness, I wrote an e mail of appreciation to the new management, and I was just answered with a thoughtful, welcoming and personal reply.   I'll be back to pledging support as soon as the next drive starts and will be sure to do so during "Folks Like Us".
