Why not just use nothing but our real names?

Now who's being paranoid? This post is from a nameless guest. There is a world of difference between this and one from a made up name. Look at this thread you know who has posted in the main, altho' they are made up names.

You may want your name splattered on the www, but don't assume we can all be free with our personal details.

I don't see much difference between guest and some made up name. Why not just use nothing but our real names? That would cut way down on the personal attacks, and it would run the paranoids off.

My subjective impression in that the 'cat is running better than for some months. It seems that when it's slow, the page still loads most of the time if you wait for it. For me however it's fast most of the time - perhaps the time of day?

It's a valuable resource to a lot of people - the breadth of knowledge and experience of many of the regular posters is unmatched in my experience. So there are a few stupid or malicious posters but a small proportion of the whole.

Yesterday afternoon the 'cat got a bit slow, as it does sometimes; but after taking a break I found it back to about as good as it gets. I also perceived that "something looked a bit different."

The difference probably was just from my poking around elsewhere, and possibly resetting my own display, but casting a glance around on the cat I found that Member Photos were no longer double listed!.

Has something really changed?

I'm afraid to go back and look again. It might have been a fluke!

John

If I read it properly GUEST - who has been entreated to set up his own forum - has.

FWIW I choose links on my site very carefully and the Mudcat is one I wear proudly.

As for registration - it doesn't keep out comments I find un-necessary. They are part of life (low though it may seem at times) and the benefit is that naive novices can have their say. WE choose to read them and we can choose not to respond or engage. Which is the way to deal with "names" that have to have their say and the last one at that. Don't bother Clinton - I will be most happy not to read your repost and won't reply. Which is far more irritating to those that must have the last hollow word. But if it pleases their little hearts - who am I to cast aspersions on their pecadillos?

Long live the 'Cat and thanx to Sir Max for sticking with it. My appreciation is coming from a similar - if far more modest place.

if you must throw tomatoes - please take them out of the tin............

number 6 - comes down to it, although the site is used worldwide, it is an American site, created and run by a very generous American.

However, I would have thought that the libel laws were similar in most of the countries where Mudcatters reside. Common courtesy, of course doesn't seem to be as widespread as most of us would like.

Hey Amos, I did say "I doubt" ;-) But thanks for the info.

However it takes more than just one server. It takes work and time and payment for the bandwidth. If Max had enough money he would put it to improving everything he could.

So hang in there guys, this is still the best site on the internet despite the performance problems. Otherwise we'd all be elsewhere.

This is America. We have freedom of expression but it does not extend to slander or libel. Just a word to the wise.

Also, there is another freedom; for the eternal malcontents, bugger off!

Bert:

You are mistaken. The sales of the Mudcat CD Series, which Dick Greenhaus sells still, made enough to buy the Mudcat a new server; and so it did.

Performance greatly improved at that time; there was some sort of unfortunate massive crash which set us all back some. But as I have said before, the current server is very fast and goes down a lot less often than the Cat has during its worst periods.

I would mention that the Cat is serving an exponntially greater number of posts and gets than it did in 1999-2000, and drawing from a huge database of records for queries. Yet none of this has cost any of us any more than we were happy to vilunteer. SUch a deal. May your life be full of such wonders!

'And the problems never get fixed.' That's 'cos they don't get ENOUGH money!!!

I doubt if Max has received enough in the last 9 years to even buy one server let alone the staff to run it for 9 years.

Those of you who haven't got receipts. Max spends most of his time trying to keep this place running (and that's apart from his job and ppersonal life). He doesn't always have time to keep up with the paperwork.

So those who have sent money - on behalf of Max, and without any authority whatsoever - "Thanks - It is appreciated."

I'd like to know whether threads like the MOAB have a noticable effect on performance, bandwidth, etc, etc.

You know MS SQLServer better than me Dave and I think I made comments on this once before but there does seem as if there is a weekness in all but the latest (which I did read somewhere has and alternative approach but I doubt MC has) with this program when compared to other databases like MySQL for paging as they lack an equivilant of SELECT OFFSET LIMIT (see here for example).

I would guess that serving the full thread would have a negative impact on the system and obviously is serving a lot of bandwidth for a page but there seem to me questionmarks over even serving the 50 per page.

The worst case scenario I'd guess would be an implemtation (eg 1. in the comments on the bottom of the link I gave) which passed the full whatever thousand record dataset from the database server onto the script and then have the script somehow access and process the appropriate 50. I'm not sure if MC adopts that sort of method or not.

I don't imagine some of you will believe this, but I know it to be true: the very server by way of which you are currently carrying on this conversation was purchased with funds donated to the Mudcat. I know this because I have been among the few major benefactors over the years.

Receipt? You need a receipt? You are using your bloody receipt right here, right now!

"Those that feel that they ain't getting a fair shake for their money"

Mudcat is worth EXACTLY the amount of money I've tossed into Max's beer fund... There's NO resaon why if this place NEEDS money, it can't generate it itself with adds and such...

"Guest 05 Jan 06 - 08:29 AM"
1) If your IP was blocked in any real way, you wouldn't be able to access the site at all... So I doubt that IPs CAN be blocked...

Other than that Guest is 100% dead-nuts on the mark....

"We will continue to support the Mudact"
Would that such were true... All you're supporting is Max's Beer Fund... Nice scam really

If yer o.k. with that, bully for you... what you do with your money is none of my business... just don't try to claim it's doing something it's not

A receipt would have been nice, but unfortunately it didn't happen.

I'll probably donate again sometime.

Maybe I'll get a receipt then. Just for my own peace of mind about the transaction.

One of the things that may help would be for all members to look at there PM's and delete all the ones that are no longer useful.
Then copy and paste all other pm messages to a word document and save it.
Then delete the remaining PM's.

I have to admit to being very lazy with deleting my pm's and they sure do mount up.
I am now going through them little by little to remove them all.

The other thing, is how long are normal threads kept by Mudcat?
Most threads are worthless after a certain time and must be taking up a huge amount of unescesary storage, which must affect processing as well.
Deleting or archiving personal messages might make your personal page load a bit quicker, but that's about it. Deleted messages stay in the Mudcat database, but they are accessible only by certain administrative people - not by the regular Clones. All the personal and Forum messages posted over the 9-year history of Mudcat are still there, and they take up only a few gigabytes of space - almost every hard drive on the market today can hold the entire Mudcat database.
But yes, I have to say that we aren't satisfied with the reliability of Mudcat, either. We're doing what we can; but so far, that hasn't been enough. Still, somehow we've survived for 9 years - I think that's a pretty good accomplishment.
    -Joe Offer-

I'm in total agreement with you gnu. Those that feel that they ain't getting a fair shake for their money should a) go elsewhere or b)start their own site.

In comparison to the cost of cable, a paperback book or a night out the enjoyment quotient from the 'Cat is very good value for the contribution that Kendall and I have made.

We will continue to support the Mudact and say thankyou to the likes of Max, Pene, Joe et al for their voluntary and unpaid work in keeping it rolling along.

I will be putting another shawl in the auction before too long and all proceeds will go to the fund.

As long as there has been a Mudcat, there have been "issues" which Max, Joe, et al ALWAYS claim can only be fixed by them, and no one else can help. Except by sending money. And the problems never get fixed.

And Clinton, Max certainly knows how to block an ISP--he has blocked mine for saying what I just said in the above paragraph. You see, that is the only TRUE sin you can commit here--pointing out the fact that Max collects the money, does whatever the fuck he wants with it, never so much as acknowledges, much less thanks the people who donate, and then never resolves the reliability problems that have plagued this site for years.

And before all of you claim "how would you know guest, you probably never donated a dime"--I have. That is how I know whereof I speak.

Clinton is right. Money donated here is as good as flushing it, but it makes a few people here feel better about themselves, so they do it. What is needed is a new site owner who is dedicated to bringing the site up to snuff. Max is not that person.
