The Daily Frail is an old time banjo podcast geared to help you become a better banjo player one day at a time. Patrick Costello is going to take a basic frailing banjo exercise and, day by day, start twisting it around to help you build up your picking skills.

I like the idea.
Just before Christmas I won an i-Pod mini (the 4 GB setup) courtesy of Walkers Crisps and a local ASDA supermarket(there - advert done - they deserve it it's an ace piece of kit and it cost me the price of the ink it took to write my name and address on a card), so I'm wanting to check out what Podcasts are all about.
I followed the link to your site and found your earlier Beginner Frailing lessons, so I downloaded them to my computer. I couldn't spot where I was supposed to put podcasts, so just allowed the i-pod to import them and organise them by its own system.
I uploaded the revised additions to the i-pod, and went to look for them. I managed to find two "albums" with variants of your name containing some of the banjo lessons, but not everything I had downloaded was in the categories I had found.
I went searching through the contents of the i-pod systematically. Eventually I located Banjo Lesson Four - it was the only track listed under the genre "Death Metal". I know some people think banjos are too loud, but surely this is going a bit too far...

I tried copying the files into the i-tunes "Podcast" directory, but it doesn't display them as "podcasts" anybody know why this should be? The files are on the system as playable MP3s but it doesn't list them as podcasts. How does i-tunes define a podcast?
The concept of a short, single idea broadcast of a couple of minutes duration which demonstrates a specific bit of technique is one I like. If you keep this up, it is definitely a link I would give to learners.
Quack!
Geoff.

I'm just refreshing this thread, I am surprised that nobody except myself has looked at it and bothered to check it out further. I have been playing for nearly 30 years, so the beginners basics are already within my technique, but it is a resource which could be very useful for people who are starting out with banjo or experienced players wanting to try their hand at clawhammer style banjo.
It seems a shame to let this thread just drop off the forum and be lost in cyberspace.
Quack!!!!
Geoff.

Sorry 'bout the slow reply, but things have been kind of busy here with two daily podcasts.

The "death metal" category was a joke.

Regarding iPods, I don't know much about them. If you can't get the tracks to sort out the way you want them try rewriting the ID3 tags.

The Daily Frail is still chugging along. In addition to that there is a folk song of the day podcast - and in the next few weeks there will be a daily folk guitar workshop. With that much going on there is always room for a mistake in the iD3 tags here and there - or a bad joke like listiing a banjo workshop under death metal.

Keep on picking
-Patrick

This afternoon I managed to finally figure out the system - you ask the i-Pod (i-Tunes on PC)to "Subscribe" to a podcast. It brings up a box asking for an URL. You paste "http://howandtao.com/daily-frail.xml" into the box ( i.e. = internet link to http://howandtao.com/daily-frail.xml
which is the "clever" bit which tells i-Tunes what to download aas a "podcast") and it downloads the current active episode whenever you open i-Tunes and are connected to the internet.
I still haven't figured out if there is a way to collect the episodes I have missed, and ones for days I don't actually remember to turn on the computer, but that is another posting (I expect).
That said - what I have heard and downloaded manually is definitely worth checking out for beginners at frailing.
Quack!

Back again now the cat is up and running.

Before things went unstable again I was going to ask if there was any way to get missing podcasts or ones prior to the date of subscribing to a specific one. Whilst the cat was closed for repairs, I discovered an arrow on the i-Tunes "Podcast" updating page. If you click on the arrow next to a podcast it brings up a list of previous casts from the same location. These offer you the opportunity to download any one on the list. That means I am now up to date.

Patrick. I like the way you have started with straightforward basic elements, and then once there are enough of them, to assemble them into a coherent series. Let's face it - that is what learing music is about anyway.
Keep up the good work.
Geoff.

Patrick has completely rejigged his web site, so the look and layout are different from what they used to be. One of the changes is that he has moved the location of the Daily Frail podcasts. If you use the cut & paste podcast link I put a couple of postings ago, the location is no longer there. The updated link for the feed is :-
