From: Raedwulf

No, he's not, he's merely passed an excruciatingly agonizing (make allowances for the fact that he's a very bad actor, guys!) kidney stone.

But I thought I'd post the title since Little Hawk asked so very nicely for it to be done...

Well, not exactly, but this is the 'Cat after all, so he might just as well have! You think he'd know better (LH that is) by now.

But as he obviously doesn't, I will (with cruelty & malice aforethought) point out that it's only a matter of time. He's going to die Hawk, he's even older than you, he's doomed, LH, hahahaha!!! First Bones, then Scotty, maybe Sulu will be next (the Chief Navigator, after all), or Spock (strictly in the interests of science, captain). But Shatner will follow, he will, he will, he will!! He's doomed, dooooooooomed, I tell 'ee!!!!

Shatner is suffering from a termial illness.

Life! ;-)

Joe, when you change this thread title, may I suggest:

BS: Obit William Shatner's Career.

it achives the desired result of winding up little hawk without beeing too offensive

Yeah, I suppose I'll have to change the title sometime in the next day or so, but maybe it should be left up for a day or so to see how Little Hawk reacts. If I said Obit: Wm. Shitner, would that work?
Any other renaming suggestions?

Well, I kinda think it's a bit of an abuse of our thread titling. hen people look at a thread title, they should be able to know what they'll get if they click. "Obit:" has a more-or-less serious meaning to many of us, and I think it's good to respect that. What would a newspaper be like if the Obit page were laced with gag entries?

It's a question to ponder, anyhow.

I don't think the BS section of the mudcat should be compared to a newspaper. This is ment to be fun discussion and jokes. If it were to be taken so seriously shurely Little Hawk would be arested for stalking Said Bad actor. I do agree that the Obit should not be used as a joke about people we know and care about. But if we took ourselves so seriously we would not be making up fictional carictors such as Chongo Or Blind Drunk, Or Panelopy slutridge. The BS section is a nice break from the uptight PC crap that is inflicted upon most of our lives. And when it comes to the reality of grief we need humor the most. I know it helped me through the death of my wife. And as I said I doubt that any of Will Shatner's family or friends are here. So whats the harm in joking about it when one can read within the first sentence of the first post that its not true.

Me too. I saw it once I think. Vague memory--but I do know it was scary. I really miss that show (Twilight Zone?). The stories were always well-written. Seemed like it was a time when 'horror' depended on the story and not the special effects. (I'll stop here because I am about to break into Merle Haggard's "Are the Good Times Really Over for Good".)

We used to talk about Twilight Zone episodes at school, the kids lucky enough to get to watch it. I was one of the kids who didn't get to watch much so saw most of these later in repeats.

Rod Serling was tops in the story and screenwriting that he did, and this program was one that got a lot past standards and practices folks over the years (I recall an interview in which I think Twilight Zone was discussed as a program that they didn't quite know what to make of).

Wasn't Shatner lucky to get to be a part of it!

Wasn't it a TZ show in which a plastic surgeon was forced to re-make the face of a 'minor' Nazi war criminal who was being pursued by the police? (The surgeon knew that he would be killed when he'd done the work.) In the final scene, we saw the patient take the bandages off his face. The tension mounted. The patient walked to a mirror and both he and the viewers got to see his new face at the same time: perfect likeness of Adolph Hitler.

Raptor says: I don't think the BS section of the mudcat should be compared to a newspaper.
Well, yes...and no. I think our titles - and title tags - should mean something. Some people object to our moving non-music obituaries to the "BS" section because it give the implication that the death of their beloved pet ladybug is a frivolous matter. We're trying to convince people that the "BS" section isn't all frivolity, and that we're not insulting them by moving their thread to the non-music section. So, if we have joke obits tagged the same as serious obits, then the people who posted serious obits want their threads up top with the music.
So, I don't think it's a matter of political correctness - it's a matter of not misleading people. And yes, we're not a newspaper, but I still think it's not a good idea to mislead people.

I don't remember that one precisely, but it sounds like the kind of plot he would have written. I remember several really creepy dolls and puppets over the years. There were a number of shape-altering texts (I saw one recently where there were a few models to choose from, with Richard Long and Suzy Parker playing most of the characters and Colin Wilcox being the lone "plain" character. Funny--there was a Star Trek episode along those lines--only it was in the Next Generation, not in the Shatner series.

So retitle the BS section to NM "Non-Music", Joe. If Raptor hadn't sided with me, I'd be siding with him! This is plainly a *real* BS thread of the first order. I wasn't trying to upset anyone as everyone knoe ful wel! Hawk's remark in the Obit Chongo thread just *demanded* this thread be started! *grin* If it hadn't been me, someone else would have done it! You know what the 'Cat is like.

But Rap is right. Do we really need to be so PC? I've just PM'd Jeri, pointing out that if Shatner really had died, Mudcat would hardly be the first place you heard it. So you see the thread & what do you think? "Omigod" or "Someone's on the wind up"? You take the trouble to open the thread &, as Raptor points out, the first line shows it's a wind up. Are we not being rather over-sensitive?

NObit does have a certain elegance, though, I must admit. Unfortunately, it wasn't an option when I opened the thread!

FWIW, I hadn't seen (& still haven't looked at) the Obit: My Father thread. I was not in any way trying to be cruel or tasteless. I confess to being thoroughly blase about death (it comes to us all in the end, so why make a fuss) & accordingly did not imagine that the title would cause a stir (except in Hawk's palpitating little 'eart, which was, of course, the intention *evil grin*). I am not apologising, but I will also try to remember not to so title a thread in future, even though it seem appropriate!

Regards,

R

Now, see, the trick is make a thread title that's really clever, not just using thread tags to confuse people. Remember that you can choose to put whatever tag you want in the thread title, simply by choosing the blank option at the top of the list, and entering whatever tag you want in the thread title (it might be nice to put a note at the botton of the first message reminding us to move it to the nonmusic section, though).

I mean, I'm sorry and all, but Obit: William Shatner was lacking something. No, more than that - it bombed. Maybe I shouldn't say anything, because I'm not all that clever myself - but True Cleverness In Thread Titles is a worthy goal to pursue.

-Joe Offer (expressing his personal, unofficial opinion*)-

(*from an official standpoint, I don't know if I would have changed the thread title at all. I might have just let it bomb, but some volunteer changed it to "NObit" and that ain't bad).

Ah, but I don't profess to be really clever, Joe. I just fake it as best I can! :p

The question still remains, & you raised it - "I think our titles - and title tags - should mean something... We're trying to convince people that the "BS" section isn't all frivolity"

If the BS section is not wholly frivolous, does it not deserve a better title? Threads such as this aspired to be could hang out under a genuine BS tag (it was never anything else). Other more serious non-music threads could have some other tag. I'm not suggesting some infinite division of the board, but obviously there is some concern that the current two way split is neither sufficient, nor accurate in description (a lot of BS threads aren't BS, they're just not about music!).

Just a thought...

Well, yeah, Raedwulf, but one of our principles has always been that abbreviations in thread tags should be brief and immediately understandable. At least in the US (and most probably most of the rest of the English-speaking world), "BS" is immediately understandable. The same can't be said for "NM."

Admittedly, the "BS" term creates some hesitation in the minds of some who are certain that their favorite non-music topic is NOT frivolous, but maybe that's OK. After all, this is a music forum, and maybe it's healthy for people to have to cringe a bit before they post non-music stuff.

Search Google for obit william shatner. This thread is currently at the top of the first page. International fame - wow!

Also, it appears thiis isn't the first time Shatner has died. There was the album. Then there was - this forum message.

I do agree that calling everything not music 'BS' isn't considerate or effective because people don't really want to label important things BS.

(BTW, does anyone else think Shambles' replacing commas with dashes makes him 'sound' like Shatner?)

Perhaps the obit on Google refers to the many times his bad acting has made the show die--or at least suffer.Denny Crane---Here.   Another role that runs his emotions much more than before---used to be A to B. This one is A to C.

I just did a search on "spatulas." It wasn't turning up near the top, so I torqued it up by searching on "spatulas Mudcat." Now that's an odd bit of reading.

Search Google for obit william shatner. This thread is currently at the top of the first page. International fame - wow!

Good gods! Did I manage that?! Warhol was right - 5 minutes of fame for everyone. And I wasted it on Shatner. Hawk, I shall never forgive you. I could have been briefly famous (or, at least, notorious) for something worthwhile. But no! You ruined it...

Joe - in my experience, as rather more a part of the English speaking world than you (no, not being nasty, but you speak American, not English, they're very different dialects, & no, it wouldn't surprise me to find that American is more widespread than English these days), BS has derogatory & negative connotations. In America it may mean no more than 'chewing the fat', but in the UK IMHO it has more the sense of 'talking rubbish', regardless of whether that is deliberate or inadvertant rubbish. Which is deliberately what I was doing when I started this thread, but is not what very many BS threads are. And MC is global!

Unlike Shambles, I won't make the slightest insinuation that you have anything but the best interests of MC at heart, cos I know you always have. But please don't forget - the Cat isn't American, & America isn't the Cat! BS, as an acronym, is surely immediately recognisable. But the meaning? Think again...
