This is like the conversation we had at our house this AM.

Husband was looking intently out the window.

"What do you see, dear?"

"Oh I'm just looking at the puddle in the driveway to see what the temperature is. It's above freezing."

"You been living in the country too long, boy! Don't you know we got new-fangled, modern ways of telling the temperature nowadays? Ever hear tell of the Weather Channel and the puder? Shee-it, next thang you'll be opening the front door to see if it's windy!"

A recent issue of one of my magazines offered a list of the "Ten WORST products" of the past year. The selection, of course, was limited to items people sent to them for review.

NINE of the ten were iPod wannabees (that weren't).

Oh yeah, the tenth was a digital camera that might have been pretty good 6 or 7 years ago, but just wasn't exactly state of the art this year - and was really overpriced.

I've heard of the I-Pod, but I only have a vague idea what it's for and even less of an idea why I would ever want one.

For 50 years, I kept up with 'most' of the advances in gadgetry, if not on the 'cutting edge', then soon therafter. In the last 5-6 years, technology has advanced SO fast that not only do I not have a use for many of the new...ummm.."innovations", but I actually am not even aware of many of them. Since I am at home a lot, I do not need a phone that checks email and browses the WWW...and just yesterday I saw that someone had won a contest for the cleverest 30 second video made entirely on a cell phone!

I have a cell phone...it is black, does not fold, and I buy $8-10 a month worth of time for it. I have a combo CD/MP3 player- not nearly as small as an iPOD, but it fits in my jacket pocket. I'd LOVE a wireless laptop portable PC...but I have no need to take it anywhere...I'd just like to sit in my recliner and read Mudcat instead of here at this desk! Can't justify $1500 or so just for that, though.

I can still judge some stuff about the weather by looking out the window...but BOY, I like my "WeatherPulse" program that shows me not only current weather and 10 day predictions, but lets me see an animated radar view of what's happening!

I guess I'm not quite an old fuddy-duddy yet!

Well the I-pod does make hearing a lot of the music you like very easy--in very compact form. But it also can easily cut you from the world--maybe that's part of the reason for its popularity.

However, people who can carry a tune should be able to sing songs themselves--without the aid of a mechanical device--as was done, by report at least, a lot before the advent of I-pods, Walkmen, etc. Are there really so few people anymore who can sing?

Also, outside, I think there's a lot to be said for listening to mockingbirds, wrens, bluejays, chickadees, or whatever birds may be in your area.

Ron...some folks (especially Rita..*grin*) use gadgets like in-car players to learn more songs as they drive in traffic where them cute little birdies dare not venture! She can now play CDs, MP3s AND plug her mini-disk thru it! Gadgetry is how you use it...

Interesting observation, Ron. On the street and on the local buses it has struck me that the 'bud in the ear' transporting the listener to another world is the 'nosegay to the nose' of a long ago generation- this current defense is auditory while theirs was olfactory but the effect is similar.

Bill--

In my car, I also constantly listen to the radio or my own tapes, virtually all made off the radio. But I'm talking about time outside, but out of a car--just walking around.

ah...well, then, perhaps I shouldn't confess that I often wear my MP3 player on my early morning walk! Uncle Dave Macon helps me 'keep up the pace'....☺

The iPod is a wonderful device for occasional use on walks, or boring meetings. It does tend to sweep you up a bit. Why not prefer listening to Baroque or Rick Fieldig instead of traffic noise or the droning of uninspired middle management?

The only serious advantage I see to iPod specifically is small size. If you have a CD, you have to first 'rip' it to MP3s, and I get lazy and forget. My Sony gadget will play the CDs in their native format, and so far, the added 4 oz. is not a big inposition...even at MY advanced age! (An iPod may have a better screen display or something...I never have held one...my son has had a 10 GIG MP3 player/recorder for several years, and loves it...but it was twice the price of what I use.)

I just have a portable AM/FM CD player. I can just about handle all its functions. iPods scare me. Too much gadgetry. I'm a bit of a Luddite about some things. I have no problem with my small (20 CDs) CD holder, I can easily switch out CDs when I want a change. And it fits in the padded front pocket of my messenger bag.

Ipods are for whimps and 11 year old girls...

Get a mini-disk recorder... especially a Sony HD MD...

My Mp3 is a recorder - I use it as a mass storage device, a radio and to collect rare song moments. Some even make it to Radio Britfolk.

A little hard on the eardrums, from what I've been reading, those iPods. Apparently there is a suit being drawn against Mac for hearing loss. It is the duration, as well as he loudness, that does the damage. A CD lasts 1/2-1 hr...whereas one can stay plugged in to iPod at din level for hours w/o a break.

I thought I-Pods were those things from War of the Worlds.
