Afternoon all! Greetings from Sun.....er, overca......er, misty......er, wet.......er, Soggy! Iraq. We're all keeping safe over here, if a little wet from all the rain, told you it was a funny type of desert! Thanks for all your thoughts and messages. Not much singing out here, but the MBS t-shirt, and Jack have come along for the ride. Thanks to the internet I can listen to folk on Two, which helps keep me sane. One thing that keeps me insane is that bloody hound (Jack)who is now barred, from the bar, and still wants a medal for single handedly looking after a snatch Landrover on operations last month!

Landrovers?! This place is Landrover heaven! For day to day running about, I usually take the Discovery LR3 V8SE (£43.000 to you Madam)For slightly rougher jobs it has to be the good old 110 CSW, but when its a bit dicey (I.e. downtown Basrah)a Snatch is your best friend!! As for keeping dry, this may be a desert, but by god does it rain out here, and on one occasion hailstones the size of golf balls!

As for bringing the hound out here, he brought himself! The little sod smuggled himself in my camera bag, and the mess in the mess?! Is all his own work, hence the one way chat with the RSM!

Its just about 09:00 GMT as I write this, and whilst its snowing in the UK, its a very sunny and warm 26 degrees C today! But I'd still rather be at home with the beautiful Pixie!

Liz, better check carefully what comes up!! a guy I met at a Botanical Society of the British Isles meeting was doing research into the appearance of strange and non-native plants on waste ground in London, the first likely suspected source for some of the species was bird seed , so he tried planting bird seed to see if it could happen, He had to destroy his seedlings when he showed them to the organisers and they were instantly identified as Cannabis Sativa!!!!

Reporting from Al meira tonight, much comment about the lads on patrol unable to tell if the vehicles they pass are booby trapped. They just get on with the job.

Also saw troops being stoned as they removed the casualties.
No reprisals. Just meekly turning the other cheek.
We have much to be proud of.

Shame on those who rush to accuse British troops of wrong doing, then have not the decency to apologise when their facts prove wrong.

The problem with Snatches is that they can get too hot! Its three in the afternoon here and its 33 degrees C. Hopfully I'll be back just after Miskin (Bugger!!) Becks is good Morty, but you should see the Italian bar at the unit up the road from here, talk about well stocked, everything from Coke to Champange, and everthing in between! But the piece of resistance is REAL Italian expresso! Oh boy is it good!! I was buzzing for ages! And for the delectation of the ladies, loads of Italian blokes. I mean, how do the Italians make desert combats look so stylish? Do they have them taliored by Gucci? Whereas, us Brits just look like a sack of spuds, with a pair of Rayban's on! Apart from my oppo Griff, who's just a posing git, but he's still looking for a girlfriend!! Ha Ha!

Morning all! Here is the weather forcast............HOT!! Its just turned 09:45, and the temprature is nudging 27oC already, which is not fair! Our works Snatch has just been fitted with new mud and snow tyres. Do I have any mud or snow to play with? Not a bloody hope! Meanwhile my Disco at home is on road tyres, and there's all the snow and mud in the world! Still, no rockets or morters last night, which is always a good thing. And for all the railway enthusiasts, I've spotted a couple of steam loco boilers out here, they're on the way to Shaibah and I think they could be off a 8F, if I can get a closer look I will. Mad isn't it, 3500 miles just to go train spotting!!

Sorry Sin's, still no snow out here! But the temp is a blooby hot 31oC, it seems so weird that its snowing back in the UK. More than half way through the tour now, Hurrah!!

I've tried doing some rehearsing with a camel, and I've come to the conclusion to replace Cllr, not that a camel sings better, but it dosen't keep telling crap jokes!! Greetings from sunny Bagdad! Yes, it's time for a bit of sightseeing, with just a lot of work thrown in! It's just a quick trip up here, and the hound is acctually behaving for once! Just as well as we are in the US Embassy, which used to be one of Saddams palaces. Bugger me this place is posh! And they have a great coffee shop, triple expresso! Morning all! Greetings from a somewhat soggy Basrah! We had the mother of all electrical storms last night! The whole sky was filled with sheet lightning which turned the sky purple, man what a light show! Mind you it brought enough rain to last all summer, and hailstones the size of golf balls! I knew my body armour and helmet would come in handy!!

On the train spotting front, the two boilers near Shibah are definatly from 8F's, but the frames are totally screwed! However there are reports of a couple of intact 8F's near Baghdad, but it's a bit hard to read the numbers on the cabs when you are in a Puma helecopter, doing 100+ knots at not very high!!

Oh well, back to work.............

Morning all! I'm still here, despite last night! Let me explain.................Griff(My Oppo) and I had our leaving do last night, a couple of quiet beer's, and pizza, bit of a natter, that kind of thing. Wow! I just read through this thread and I am so glad to know he's coming home safely.

None of my fellow Americans said this so I will. I apologize to Phot and the other lads. I'm sorry my president told all those lies to Blair and the rest of us. You know, the lies that landed Phot and the other lads in harm's way. I'm relieved that our Mudcat is coming home and sorry for the lads who cannot come home. I am especially sorry about those lads who came home in a box.

By the way, my nephew is over there now, a USA army grunt in Baghdad. So is his father, my ex-brother-in-law. My apology does not extend to them. They believe the propaganda.

Like everybody else, I'd like to welcome you home. We're all really happy--and relieved, to say the least--that you're back.

Once you get settled back in and when you have time--sometime in the future--it would be fascinating to get your perspective on what's REALLY going on in Iraq. Is it really as chaotic as we read?
