I'd really love to play this version of Wild Rover but I'm struggling to pick a few of them out, does anyone know the song or maybe even have the chords I could pilfer from you??

Thanks on advance!

muppitz x

If you need the chords 'placed' in the stanzas, let me know.

Lots to choose from there also.

Offer's still open on the chord placement. Haven't ever played the song but I have heard it lots. Let me know.

Thanks for the help but it's not the version I wanted.
The version the House band do is very minor chord oriented and slightly darker sounding.

However I think I've managed to figure out a few more chords so here's hoping!

Cheers for looking though.

muppitz x

Sorry Muppitz. I misunderstood your request--my fault, not yours.

They [HB] call their version "Wild Roving". I will keep looking, but don't hold yer breath. If you can find an mp3 somewhere, I will do my best for ya with the chording.

An excellent (alternate) version of the popular - Wild Rover - was recorded by the Co Kerry-native Andy O'Brien in his "The Irish Tradition" (O'Brien/McComiskey/Mulvihill) days. I believe it predates The House Band recording by a decade or so.

Andy sings it unaccompanied (at least, that's what I hear in my head). I will seek to dig it out and post it here. "The Tradition" were pretty good about crediting sources in their liner notes. I'll post any remarks as well.

"The most interesting track, though, is "Wild Roving," a very slow version of the usually more upbeat "Wild Rover." This is the first time that The House Band recorded a normally upbeat song at a slower tempo. In some cases, it works. However, in this first attempt, while Ged Foley's singing is fine, the song drags and loses too much character in the arrangement."

I dug out the tape I referenced earlier. Andy wrote: "This is a lesser known version of the old favorite singalong. I learned it from the singing of Sean Corcoran from Drogheda, County Louth."

On "The Irish Tradition - The Times We've Had" he sings it unaccompanied, as follows:

"I've played the wild rover for manys the year
and I spent all my money drinking strong ale and beer
but now for the future I will take better care
in case that misfortune shall come to my share

== CHORUS ==

Wild rovin' I'll give it over
wild rovin' give o'er
and I ne'er shall be called
the wild rover no more

I went into an alehouse where I used to resort
and I told the landlady my money it was short
and the answer that she gave me - well the answer was nae
such a custom as yours I can get anyday

== CHORUS ==

I put my hand in my pocket my money for to find
and I drew out the full of my two hands five times
when she saw I had money and money galore
when she saw I had money - she called me her stór
then she said I have liquors and strong ales of the best
and the words that I told her were only in jest

== CHORUS ==

My false-hearted landlady I might bid you adieu
and that you might be hanged without stockings or shoes
I'll go home to my father like the prodigal son
and it's there I'll confess all the wrongs that I've done

== CHORUS ==

If I had all the money that I left in your care
it would till all my land and my family rare
it would thatch all my houses - it would build me a bawn
it would buy me a coat for to keep my back warm

== CHORUS ==
== CHORUS ==

(NOTE: My apologies in advance for the inevitable errors, after all, I'm a feckin' Yank.)

Chords are dead easy. Same the whole way through. and apart from the chorus the verses are basically the same as usual.

I've (Dm) been a wild (C)rover for (Bb)many's (Am)a (Dm) year etc........

Wild (Dm)roving I'll give(C)over,
Wild (Bb)roving (Am)I'll give (Dm)o'er,
And I ne'er shall be (C)called
Wild (Bb)rover (Am)no (Dm)more.

Does anyone have the words of Wild Roving No More by John Doyle? He sang it in Dublin's Vicar Street last Sunday with mighty group "Ushers Island" & lots of differences in words he used from other versions I have heard
